#Wero is a European PayPal alternative created by European banks on top of regular #SEPA transactions. Unfortunately, Wero can only be used as a smartphone app (at least with all banks I have checked).

Apparently, with some banks strangers can find out your name and your IBAN (International Bank Account Number) by just entering your phone number which you signed up with for Wero. No payment is required for that! 🤡

No, thanks! I'll stick with SEPA and #PayPal payments.

Linus #Torvalds' justification is security: If secure boot is enabled, this must mean that the user does not wish the memory to be filled with data from the disk because it is untrusted. (Correct me if I'm wrong.) However, is it really still part of the boot process when you load the #SwapFile into memory? Also, if you distrust the disk, why would you even load the operating system from it? By Linus' logic, #Linux should only support #SecureBoot in combination with disk encryption. 🤔

@lennybacon@infosec.exchange Yes, it's not much more than an inconvenience, and maybe I find it more annoying than it really is. I always keep Firefox opened, and I would enable the option to clear the cookies whenever Firefox starts freshly (for privacy), but since I boot so often, it would take forever to log in everywhere every time, so I have to remember to clear the cookies manually. 🙄 Often, I have several file-manager windows with different directories, which takes half a minute to recreate. Then there's VLC which can't remember the same fucking playlist file I've had for years (also takes 15s). Some of the autostart apps force themselves into the foreground and infuriatingly prevent me from reaching the desktop for a short while, and so on. 🫠

Es geht ja gerade darum, dass man den Benutzernamen einfach ändern kann und er nicht das zentrale Identifikationsmerkmal eines Signal-Kontos ist. (Übrigens funktioniert die zuverlässige Erkennung gefälschter E-Mail-Absender nur dann, wenn die Absender-Domain DMARC-/SPF-Records gesetzt hat, aber das ist ein anderes Thema. ^^ Jedenfalls hilft diese Erkennung schon gar nicht gegen Phishing-Mails, deren Absender die Domain kontrolliert.)

If you just want to plainly say that you were born in Frankfurt or live in Frankfurt, then you'd typically leave out the article (“Ich bin Frankfurter”). For example, there was an anti-racism campaign called “Ich bin Münchner – ich bin Muslim” in 2018 whose intention was to emphasise that Muslims are regular Munich citizens. When you do use the article, then that can either mean the exact same or have a slightly figurative meaning. For example, there's a Wise Guys song titled “Weil ich ein Kölner bin” (Because I'm a Cologner) which humorously references certain stereotypes associated with Cologne citizens. Though, I'd also say many people would probably casually prefer “I'm from…” to “I'm a…”.

While IntelliJ's local model only suggests one line at a time on my machine (instead of multiple lines like GitHub Copilot), it certainly feels better than knowing that your typing constantly prompts a gigantic remote LLM.

Still sceptical of theories about #aliens visiting us, I must admit I find some of the US military's #UAP footage frightening, such as DOW-UAP-PR38.

Sure, I am not an image-processing expert, but the apparent contrails convince me the video indeed shows a physical #UFO. The thought that even the most capable military on Earth is unable to explain it is utterly disturbing to me.

Either an adversarial nation has got highly obscure aircraft or the ability to somehow manipulate mission footage.

Using or omitting the indefinite article may make a small difference: “Ich bin Berliner” (just: I'm from Berlin) vs. “Ich bin ein Berliner” (more like: I'm one of you); but both are grammatically fine. It's a bit like “I'm American” vs. “I am an American”, I'd say.

@Techaltar@mas.to I don't get it. I have 16 GB of physical RAM and another 16 GB of swap memory. Still, Ubuntu freezes multiple times a week due to memory exhaustion and requires raising an elephant. Using Firefox, IntelliJ, two Matrix clients, Nextcloud, an e-mail client and a music player simultaneously is a real challenge for me.

@Lucomo Ja, das ist ein Problem. Die Leute sind auch schnell genervt, wenn man ihnen verklickert, dass sie sich die drölfzigste PIN merken müssen. Eine sinnvolle Alternative sehe ich aber nicht, denn z.B. ein Passkey auf dem Smartphone würde ja im Verlustfall mit dem Gerät zusammen abhanden kommen.

@Lucomo Den behaupteten Zusammenhang zwischen PIN-Erinnerungen und Phishing-Erfolgsquote finde ich konstruiert. Einerseits ist das Abfrage-Popup nun mal kein Chat, andererseits hilft die Erinnerung gerade den Normalonutzern, denen die Wichtigkeit der PIN nicht klar ist. Diese sind die Hauptzielgruppe und stellen einen großen Teil der Nutzerschaft. Der Infochat ist trotz ☑️, „Offizieller Chat“-Beschriftung und deaktivierter Antwortmöglichkeit in der Tat etwas unglücklich konzipiert. Wenn man von einem Unbekannten angeschrieben wird, wäre es wohl am sinnvollsten, wenn die App beim Empfänger per RegEx prüfen würde, ob der Unbekannte irgendeinen Namen wie „Signal-Support“ hat, und ggf. ein riesiges rotes Banner à la „Dieses Profil ist nicht offiziell!“ anzeigen würde.

@fribbledom I'd strongly recommend installing Java using a package manager or using SDKMAN, so that you don't need to touch the PATH variable or any environment variables. For example, Azul provide their JDK through an APT repo: https://docs.azul.com/core/install/linux-ca-deb#install-from-azul-apt-repository With SDKMAN, you can install several JDKs (and each one in different versions) and manage which one is used by default. Beherrscht ihr #Schreibschrift?

(Jimmy Kimmel hat sich darüber lustig gemacht, dass in einigen Bundesstaaten wieder auch Schreibschrift und nicht mehr nur noch #Druckschrift gelehrt werde, obwohl es ja gefühlt nicht mal mehr Lehrer gebe, die noch Schreibschrift kennen würden. Eine Straßenumfrage am Hollywood Boulevard legte dann nahe, dass Schreibschrift eine enorme Herausforderung für die Passanten sei.)

Um den geht es bei der Phishing-Welle aber gar nicht, denn Benutzernamen sind nur dazu da, dass man selbst denjenigen Kontakt auf Signal findet und von sich aus die Unterhaltung initiiert. Wenn man von jemandem angeschrieben wird, sieht man den Benutzernamen gar nicht, sondern nur den Anzeigenamen.
