i've not seen this film since i was too young to have a clue what i was watching, really looking forward to seeing it again 'Frontman Graham “Suggs” McPherson remembers tracking shots being filmed “by a cameraman in a trolley or on a bicycle”; overhead shots involved “someone hanging off a stepladder”. Robinson rarely sought permission to shoot locations, guitarist Chris Foreman describing their mindset as “do it quick enough and they can’t tell you to stop. By the time some jobsworth comes along, you’ve already finished.” It was a vibe they’d learned as teenage delinquent graffiti artists' #madness #london #twoTone #skahttps://www.theguardian.com/music/2026/sep/21/madness-take-it-or-leave-it-baggy-trousers-nutty-boys

This piece is so exceptionally good I'm willing to bet it'll be included in collections years from now. It is an historically good, extraordinarily well crafted piece of writing. 'when evidence proliferates, and visibility increases, while political evasion persists, we face a different obstacle entirely. The facts are out there, but their implications are repeatedly refused. It is a cultivated imperviousness to what is already known' #palestine #israel #gaza #manufacturingConsenthttps://www.equator.org/articles/moral-stupidity-gaza-palestine-abdaljawad-omar

Gaza and the Problem of Moral Stupidity • EQUATOR

Forty years after Edward Said demanded ‘permission to narrate’, the truth from Palestine has never been more widely known. And yet the annihilation continues.

Now, what’s interesting about the cases of Japan, South Korea and Taiwan — and I think this is the big contrast with China, and this sets the stage for what makes China’s case so interesting and so important — is that in the case of Japan, South Korea and Taiwan, they were of course close cold war allies of the US' #technologyTransfer #technology #competition #development

I keep coming back to the ecological concept of "shifting baseline syndrome": each generation mistakes the world it inherits for the way things have always been. Anyone between the ages of 18 to 21 has spent their adolescence in a world in which options trading, sports betting, prediction markets, and crypto are commonplace activities. That's a drastic departure from recent norms and we're all worse off for it. Words by me. https://buttondown.com/natebowling/archive/everything-is-gambling-now/

@lzg at risk of labouring the subject, this is part of the bigger picture imo the agency being attributed in this case is not so much to the tool itself rather the marketing (propaganda?) around it's usefulness/efficiency/power. that is entirely the result of this campaign to normalise all these claims, in addition to some of the more absurd claims that give the more mundane assertions more weight than they deserve. all the discussion around the singularity and adjacent bullshit is part of this dynamic. it's absolutely the fault of anyone who swallows this shit if they lose work as a result of that passivity but the scale of this cultural coercion is probably unprecedented and operates an explicitly affective frequency I don't want to suggest we should valorise cartesian binaries but i think we lost something when we turned our back on that principle and the right wing insurgency's as much a product of that as the idiots giving openclaw root priviledge on their systems

@mike805@noc.social the opec story's as much about the cartel as anything else but it covers things like economics of uae v saudi the saudis have to fund their tourist vision, uae have a more modest idea of how to ensure they've done all they can to make the best of what looks like demand that may well peter out before reserves're exhausted immediate demand is a seperate issue to decarbonization strategies and europe have to take care of immediate need that's been screwed by the changing relationship with the us (who objected to and obstructed the nordstream projects). on top of that there's existing infrastructure covering the northsea fields – it's not wholly new investment to exploit market opporunities

@mike805@noc.social ok, further to the above i typed the reverse to quality in my original reply – switching back to characteristics v heirarchic cats, shale oil is 'sweet' and gulf oil 'sour' us refineries are calibrated to gulf oil characteristics. the further point was that shale fields are limited and produce for an average of 3 to 4 years, that there is a limited supply of shale vs gulf supply which is not comparable upshot is that your idea to invest in recalibrating refinery infrastructure (something i'm in no position to assess the economics of) is in pursuit of refining shale that is in very limited supply. it is just an absurd thing to suggest tbqh
