mastodon 4.7.3
  • Open on fosstodon.org

For those of you born after the beginning of real time (1 January 1970), the avatar is a reference to a TV series about a man trapped on a beautiful Mediterranean island with nothing to eat or drink except gourmet food and fine wine. All while being surrounded by beautiful women. Oh the humanity!

Interests include #Tiddlywiki, #dutch , #duolingo (3000 day streak), gardening, and random things.

@Sustainable2050@mastodon.energy That's in Europe where there are actual railroads that could be used. The thing is, that often the plane is cheaper than the train. And except for domestic flights, autos burn more carbon per passenger miles. So if I were to target one thing, it would be autos. https://ourworldindata.org/travel-carbon-footprint

@jonathanavt@mastodon.nl @OneInterestingFact@mastodon.ie @cuu508@toot.lv @Sustainable2050@mastodon.energy Although true, why stop there? If it wasn't for autos, nobody would take a job 20 to 50 miles from home. And in turn, no employer would pick a location 30 miles out from the center of a town. World-wide, there's only 100 to 300 thousand air flights a day. But in America alone, there are 1.1 billion auto trips. The impact of autos is more deleterious than that even of airplanes. https://www.earth.com/news/51-percent-of-the-world-relies-on-car-commutes-every-day/ https://www.bts.gov/statistical-products/surveys/national-household-travel-survey-daily-travel-quick-facts

@ElenLeFoll@fediscience.org It seems like the real underlying problem is the "publish or perish" syndrome, where the value of a researcher is based on how many papers they write, or how often they're reference. So there's a proliferation of papers, many of which are meaningless, and which no one has time to actually read, being referenced in other papers by other researchers who don't have time to read and evaluate all these other papers.

@richardh @bobdobberson @LordCaramac @n_dimension @paninid But people aren't always the solution either. Back when real paper shuffling was a thing, I worked at a company where we found that paperwork was being filed in the completely wrong place. It turned out that one of the hires, the spouse of an upper management person, couldn't actually read. The reality is that LLM / AI is might actually be *better* than 70% of actual humans -- at that wage scale.

@OneInterestingFact@mastodon.ie @cuu508@toot.lv @Sustainable2050@mastodon.energy The emitted weight of CO2 is something like 3.7x the weight of fuel. Beef has a very large carbon footprint. In any event, you wouldn't look at the weight of the sandwiches, which have water (60%) and other non-caloric nutrients. Also, even if the cyclist stayed home, they'd be consuming 2000k per day. Per the article, a cyclist produces as little as 16g/km CO2. (maybe just gets the chips) That would be about 10kg of emitted carbon.

@somebody I assume that it's priced high enough that it would be only for people who have some type of emergency. It's enough of a niche that it's not going to make a difference one way or the other. It's the "normal" things we do every day that matter -- like driving, flying, meat-based lifestyle, disposable drink bottles.

And tablet is doable, since the 3rd party app Molly can do it. In both cases, the point is to make the experience more enjoyably than squinting at a tiny screen.

@SURF@social.edu.nl The problem is that everything so far has been based on asymmetric encryption. Dat is voorbij. But imagine a model with one or more central key distributors. You'd go to some place like Albert Heijn and buy yourself a Yubikey-like device. This would let you connect privately to the central service (CS). Then CS would give you a key to AH and forward the same key to AH using its own shared key. You would, of course, have to really trust the central service.

@dat@social.g33ky.de @sunny@gotosocial.sny.sh The hacker left off a step. The one on the left will give you a serious sounding warning that what you are about to do could hurt your system. So a sentence about, "If you receive a message saying you might be hurting your system, stop, and contact IT immediately." might help. The one on the right could be malware, but either the Stores have to be compromised, or you will need to side-load an app, which is non-trivial for most users.

In any event, the planet isn't being destroyed because a few people use disposable batteries.
