Parked bikes take up 1/20 the space of parked cars.
That's why everyone in Utrecht is able to enjoy a sunny day sitting along a canal.
We have choices.
We can bankrupt our transportation system while repairing car roads.
We can buy giant vehicles for everyday errands.
We can pay high gas prices.
Or we can build reliable transit & wide, safe, connected bike lanes.
It's our future. Speak up for what you need.

Last year #Utrecht widened ~1 mile (1.2 km) of bike lanes on either side of a major retail, freight, transit street so that people on bikes could safely pass ➕ ride side-by-side.
The project also added tons of bike parking, parklets, trees, safer street crossings. Lost ~50 car parking spaces.
Good choice for your city?
@BicycleDutch@mastodon.social has a good write up on this street redo. https://bicycledutch.wordpress.com/2025/09/17/reinventing-utrechts-amsterdamsestraatweg-from-imperial-route-to-liveable-street/

My 5 takeaways from Velo-City Rimini 2026
I’ve only been to four Velo-City conferences since my first in Vancouver, Canada in 2012. What I’ve seen over the past 14 years has been a major shift: from biking as an advocacy proposition to biking as an industry.
- Bikes are transportation, not “Alternative Transportation”
- Bike transportation needs real investments of money and space
- It’s surprising which cities and countries are on-board ...

We're always in the process of rebuilding cities for our future. Ideally, we should build places where we thrive.
What helps us to thrive? Enough homes to live in. Trees. Places to meet neighbors. Easy ways to move around.
All great cities begin with streets for people (not the cars they drive).
This Mother's Day, give mom a protected bike lane.

A mile of Utrecht's Amsterdamsestraatweg carrying bus & freight lines, 20,000 bikes/day plus 300 business storefronts and 2500+ housing units was rebuilt last year.
It's so good!
2.5 meter wide smooth asphalt bike lanes on both sides of the road
1.8m sidewalks
1.4 million pavers
116 new trees
200 well-designed bike parking spots
5 new plazas
plus new lights, bus shelters, and sewer lines
...and 58 fewer car parking spots

Dutch transportation planners are experts in "Induced Demand", in this case, induced demand for bike-share bikes.
Every train station in the Netherlands rents bikes to train pass holders for €4.65 (about $5US) for 24 hours.
These OV-fiets in #Utrecht are all gone by 10AM. A clear indication of induced demand for bikes (as well as Induced Demand for good transit + bike lanes).
A regular reminder that a thriving modern city depends on giving people the option to walk, or bike, or take the bus. Not cars.

Amsterdamsestraatweg is a busy Utrecht bus & freight corridor, residential & shopping street, now transformed with mini-parks, lots of bike parking, better street lighting + 2.6-meter bike lanes of smooth, just-poured red asphalt (if it's not fresh Kermit is it fresh Elmo?). The whole project is just over 1km long and it looks and rides great!
Happy #PrideMonth!
It wouldn't be Pride in Utrecht without the inflatable Dom Tower, lowered and raised at each of the Oudegracht's 16 bridges.

Imagine stumbling upon this well-maintained route, just traveling home. I appreciate beautiful unexpected bikepaths throughout the Netherlands.

Just what we need in the Netherlands. Introducing, this April 1, the self-driving bicycle.
Precies wat we in Nederland nodig hebben. Vanaf 1 april introduceren we de zelfrijdende fiets.

Along with so many people, I came to #Portland motivated by the dream, that by "2030, #biking would be more popular than #driving for trips of three miles or less. Portland’s victory over #car-dependence would be complete."
Brilliant @sightlineinstitute@masthead.social writer @andersem@mastodon.social documented Portland’s bike history way back in 2014 - the moment the "bike wave crested. The day that Portland started to fall out of love with its story."
Is the dream coming back?
Hope so!

@Stoori@polyglot.city You can rent if you have a transit pass. There is such a huge demand (remember most of those 800 bikes are gone by 10AM) that providing extra bikes for visitors would take too much space. There are plenty of bike rental places near most stations.
