@NanoRaptor@bitbang.social I bought a bunch of these to use with this power board only to realise that the USB orientation was wrong.
Super frustrating, didn't even know they sold these in PE configuration (Pins East).

@bloor My favourite part of DIY is when I go to fix something on my shelf and find a notepad filled with terrible handwriting hypothesising what's broken and how to fix it.
I'll examine it, add some more notes, think, "I'll get back to this soon," and put it back on the shelf.
All the handwriting is mine. The thing is never getting fixed.

@Sempf Same with schools that used to have a news page on their website, now all on Facebook/Instagram - no other way of getting that information.
(and once again, it's something we already have a really good solution for since essentially the dawn of the internet... RSS FEEDS JUST DO IT)

@zackwhittaker@mastodon.social Have already had schools reaching out to say, "But no financial information was accessed," when, at least where I am, we've never entered any financial information into Canvas.
I'm more concerned about all the other back-end personal data loaded into Canvas from elsewhere that can't be changed with a phonecall to a bank.

@cwebber@social.coop Prompt injection is terrifying to think about. "What's the best library to do this?" and suddenly your agent could be web-fetching random blog posts and forum replies, all of which could have instructions in them that compromise your project.
And it's not so trivial to deal with, there's no 'sanitize' or 'escape' for this kind of input. There's so many ways to inject information into a pattern matching machine...

@mxchara @amosmulder @Blender Blender's UX is so good that the proprietary alternatives copied it.
It's complex software with three decades of features behind it - and it loads instantly. People use it because it's actually good.

Marketing and self interest. Donate to one of the most successful open-source projects for creatives out there, release a separate tool to interface with said project. Get good press for your newly released tool.
NVIDIA, Adobe, Meta, Google et al. - they're not the first AI company on the list, and the rules are clear:
https://fund.blender.org/funding-policy/
All these companies sponsor the Linux Foundation as well (Anthropic included). 😔

@mrfry @cwebber There's one in the Blender Labs too, but in either case - it's not built into Blender itself, it's a separate extension that already has a bunch of alternatives like the one you found.
MCP is a REST API with AI branding, they're not hard to implement since so many programs in the production space already have something like this for scripting and stuff.

@mxchara @amosmulder @Blender But I'd still argue, for what it includes, it does an incredibly good job of doing so, even if there is room for improvement. Geometry nodes, grease pencil - these are definitely innovative in this space.
It's a bit dismissive to say that it sucked anyway... the reason we care so much about their decisions is because it's doesn't suck, and it has an incredible community (most of whom weren't involved in this decision).

If it ever goes that way I'll be looking to throw my support behind the next fork.

@knowprose Now the other scenario.
Anthropic forks Blender, releases their own 'Claude 3D,' funnels all the magical AI money into it.
They'd have to release it open-source and any code - assuming the codebase doesn't become a vibe-slopped mess - could be used by the original project.
Which one are we all going to be using? Probably the one maintained by one of the most inspiring open-source teams out there. Three decades building a free competitor to all the proprietary options.

@thankfulmachine@oldbytes.space They did cross the line. They also crossed the line when they accepted funding from Meta, Google et al. I'm not happy about any of that.
But I've clearly been poor at communicating.
I'm a motion graphics designer. There is no software in my field that isn't being tainted by this stuff and most of it isn't open-source.
If everyone who cares about Blender leaves, and all who are left are the same AI bros asking for these features... it becomes the main, well-funded fork.

As is fediverse tradition: it's more important to get the final word in and block the person you're talking to than to actually discuss anything.
You were the one doing the condescending 'smart guy' labelling and making assumptions about how I'll 'be good either way in film' as though artists in the film industry are somehow unaffected by AI.

@thankfulmachine@oldbytes.space The fact they responded at all - and are going to be changing their funding polices, when community donations are tiny compared to what the corporations are giving them every year, is exactly why we shouldn't be abandoning them and splintering off in all different directions.
We should hold them accountable and make the project better.

@knowprose An entirely community-funded Blender with no corporate donors at all would be ideal from the 'human' perspective. Linux being used in military equipment AND my home desktop - equally not great.
We're living in hell, being offered the occasional glass of ice water.*

@ambientspace@cloudisland.nz I can't test this out since the Online Accounts Drive mounting seems broken in KDE at the moment, but you could probably setup a symbolic link in your home folder for it.
How's it showing up at the moment, like a gdrive:/ path or something?

@be @mrfry @cwebber Some of their earliest commits to the extension indicate they were testing compatibility with Claude, "Claude keeps failing to take screenshots even though we have a screenshot tool, this may help resolve the problem."
Also mentioned was 'LM Studio' - a local app for running models locally, though no mention of ChatGPT, Gemini et al from what I can see.

@thankfulmachine@oldbytes.space What would be the benefit?
There wouldn't be any code to remove, the AI stuff is a separate add-on that's not installed by default. If that changes, then sure.
So is it just a fork with a different name and code of ethics that, realistically, means nothing if continuing to pull code from the main project when they release new features?
If it were in the vein of Vscodium, ungoogled-chromium, LineageOS... forks that are actually taking stuff out it would make more sense.

@thankfulmachine@oldbytes.space If I fork Blender, and nothing other than the name and mission statement are different, is that enough of a change for you to feel that I've meaningfully changed things?
Still all the same code, funded by the same companies, but I'm just packaging it up with my own branding and message.
For me, I'd much rather the community fund Blender so they don't have to have these corporate donors than create forks that ultimately are all funded by corporate donors.

@thankfulmachine@oldbytes.space My point was that Bforartists are already well-established, have a track record and - since they're artist focused - would not pull AI changes into their version of the project.
But since posting that I found that they use AI to work on their project and have said it's out of the question. So yes, it's more irrelevant than I thought, I apologise.
