AI-generated music pisses me off. Thankfully YouTube tells me if something is AI-generated so I can skip away from it. I wish I could filter it out entirely, though.

@dalias@hachyderm.io @datenwolf@chaos.social @miah@hachyderm.io What? No. It literally has the opposite effect: only the remote server (even a headless one) needs to be able to run the GL/VK APIs or accelerated encoding. It makes it so that it's tolerant of high latency connections and lower bandwidth connections.

I've literally been able to use Wayland apps with waypipe --video ssh over in-flight Wi-Fi over the Atlantic with minimal UX impact. The app was responsive and worked fine.

@dalias@hachyderm.io @datenwolf@chaos.social @miah@hachyderm.io There isn't anything to fix. It makes sense to use graphics rendering APIs for drawing. And offloading from the CPU to the GPU for this sort of thing frees up cycles for core logic to run on the CPU and lowers overall resource usage (including energy usage).

Integrated GPUs are spreading to more and more parts, even downmarket into ultra-low-end SoCs. (2) I have never seen an X11 application do this. And nothing stops you from doing that with Wayland applications too, except for it doesn't make sense to do and never has, even in the X11 days.

The CFP is now open for #FOSSY2026 through April 30, and #CampKDE will be part of FOSSY this year! If you're coming to FOSSY and would like to speak about KDE things, consider proposing a talk!

@mttaggart Sure, but he doesn't own it, he doesn't even get to make decisions unilaterally. That's really the difference here. If it was some kind of fake-foundation that was really a for profit company where he actually owned it, then I think there's some meat to it. But it's a real 501(c)(6) with trustees, bylaws, and formal public records. If the Rails Foundation is being sketchy, then yes, pull funding. But it seems fine so far.

By doing this, they get publicity and discounted/free co-engineering alongside discounted larger scale Dell equipment orders for both servers and workstations.

It might be April Fool's Day, but you'd be a fool if you didn't check out today's #SudoShow episode where Noel, Bill, and I have a lighthearted conversation about pranks in the office. It's a nice break from the day-to-day humdrum with the #BusinessOfLinux.

@mttaggart The conversations I had with the Framework people indicated they have never funded Omarchy. And funding RailsWorld makes sense when it is run by the Rails Foundation, which stewards Ruby on Rails. That's the stack their websites are all built on. Are you saying they *shouldn't* support their dependencies? Because that doesn't sound good at all.

@gunstick @whitequark @rey @cadey @0xabad1dea Microsoft Copilot is driven by the same incentives that all the other Microsoft products are: that is, people use them because their companies make them use it, rather than people willingly choosing them. That means that user feedback has a very low priority for them, since it has little impact on revenue.

@cassidy At least with extensions, you *do* somewhat have sizable data points with extensions.gnome.org and extensions distributors ship by default. Same goes for settings. If distributors are changing them or considering changing them, that's a decent signal for consideration. As for the last point... 🤷

I don't *need* them to give everything, I *want* them to give as much as possible. I've also found that there's always *someone* with influence to connect with in every company. Finding that someone can be hard, though. 😅

@deobald@fantastic.earth @matk@mastodon.social @razze@osna.social Weirdly enough, I use both ~/Sources and ~/Projects. The latter comes from doing development on Mac OS X (which already creates this for Xcode, I think?). On my system, stuff I develop locally goes into ~/Projects and eventually gets into the ~/Sources hierarchy once I pick where it gets hosted.

@scien@social.linux.pizza @ariadne@social.treehouse.systems @enigmatico@mk.absturztau.be @mgorny@social.treehouse.systems @Amorpheus@kind.social I personally don't think of it that way, because it kind of cuts out the indirect personality effects that have outsized impacts. Internal reputation, solid personality, respect, and influence are important factors. When I worked in a larger company, I had those things and that allowed me to encourage the company to contribute "by default". The conversation around FOSS was *usually* collaborative rather than consumptive.

One of the most bizarre things YouTube has recommended to me in a while: a country-style cover of the #PokémonJohtoJourneys opening theme... in *German* (it's dual language, technically...).

It's not like it sounds bad, but country style with German sounds so odd to my ears...

A bigger driver is usually complexity. OpenStack and Kubernetes survive as permissively licensed projects because they're literally too complex to fork. Earlier attempts and "small cloud" solutions fail unless they are copylefted because they lack complexity for survivability.

It's really easy for people who have regular, stable incomes and a built-in long-term career to make judgements about stuff like this, but it's extremely hard for folks like me.
