@technomancy@hey.hagelb.org @cwebber@social.coop late to this, sorry - vacation. As someone who contributes to both Fedora and Debian currently, and am increasingly leaning towards dedicating some proper time to get into Guix, the 'vibe-check' concept sounds really appealing. The best listing of tainted software I know right now is https://codeberg.org/ethical-foss/open-slopware (I'm compiling a list of resources here: https://semble.so/profile/michel-slm.name/collections/3mqkd5nzyh22e) They do already have a tagging system in place with roughly similar colour-coding.

Went to my first #Rust #meetup ever. It was fun, but very dismaying how a lot of participants talk more about #LLM than about language features or code written in it #AIslop #GenAI #NoAI

@andrewnez@mastodon.social @gvwilson@mastodon.social @fedora@fosstodon.org is planning to use https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Changes/Adopt_PURL_Metadata which is at the very least SBOM adjacent. We find that otherwise each packaging ecosyatem has its own way of specifying dependencies, and this makes it harder for security teams to flag issues accurately

Hi, my name is Michel, and I (reluctantly) use #LLM

Since I'm about to announce the existence of some tools I wrote to help with some workflows in the Linux distribution space, I figure it's only fair if I first write about why I ended up (having to) use LLM.

@mttaggart@infosec.exchange @BillySmith@social.coop I'm a happy user of Codeweavers' Crossover Office for these sorts of things Though it's been a while since I even needed to have it installed, so YMMV, but I have a lifetime license as a way to support Wine development

@bookwar the USA login.gov is actually very nice! But I don't know how much that is integration work vs developing key components In general I agree though, the recent EU forks seem completely unnecessary, and I say this as someone who agrees with the need for tech "sovereignty" (not sure I like the term)

Announcing sandogasa (why? it's a Japanese straw hat often associated with post-apocalyptic robots) - a collection of tools and libraries for @fedora@fosstodon.org packaging workflows.

With emoji support!

@viraptor @Joshsharp I have to reluctantly find a balance on this too - for me, it's "if I don't do this I get fired" and "this community is pushing AI anyway and the battle is lost". But I'm increasingly looking to seek refuge in more AI skeptical communities - everything is tainted already (Linux kernel, curl, etc) but we need to maintain areas where people are not trying to make it worse. Those are increasingly rare 😞

@mttaggart I've gotten to the point where I think community run distros are just better to depend on going forward (I count Debian there, Fedora not so much)

@mttaggart Fedora doesn't have a way to work on embargoed security issues, and even on day zero, constraints imposed by corporate sponsors (eg supporting s390x) sometimes means official updates take a while to build

@mttaggart@infosec.exchange especially when there is already a widespread literacy problem to begin with. It's quite telling that the ruling class tries to limit screen time use for their kids, but pushing screen use to public school systems... https://www.persuasion.community/p/the-average-college-student-is-illiterate https://www.nytimes.com/2026/03/29/technology/chromebook-remorse-kansas-school-laptops.html

@major@fosstodon.org per @mairin@mastodon.ie 's research, which I concur with, any of floss.social (my old instance, moved because they blanket-ban my employer's IP address so it's inconvenient), social.coop (I have an account there and is sort of on their tech WG) and hachyderm.io (rip Kris Nova) would be fine. The first and last have more open source types, the second has non-techies in the cooperatives space as well.

@ell1e@hachyderm.io @lauren@mastodon.laurenweinstein.org the Linux kernel community and systemd has been quite open about using LLM. I think even Curl uses LLM but IIRC it's only for doing security assessment (since external parties are using LLM to find bugs anyway), not sure if they are already using LLM for writing actual code as well or not

@lauren@mastodon.laurenweinstein.org hence the bitter Thank you for Smoking mortgage quote in the blog post. If I had been able to #FIRE and I'm just doing this for fun I'd be able to be more principled on this. So I mostly agree with you. "If you voluntarily use these systems" is key here - until the VC-driven AI craze meets its inevitable crash - maybe the energy crisis thanks to imperialistic hubris this year will trigger that - a lot of us are *coerced* to a greater or lesser extent to use these. I'm actually looking for AI-free projects to contribute to when I'm not being paid to do open source, so I'm watching the @debian@framapiaf.org and @guix@hachyderm.io discussions around AI policy with a mixture of curiosity and trepidation.
