FLOSS project necromancer.

Geek, husband, lover, software developer, Londoner. Not necessarily in that order.

he/him

Proud #GTK and #GNOME dev; member of the GNOME Foundation.

"One of the people responsible for the failure of the Linux desktop", according to a random YouTube user.

Opinions are always my own, but if you don't like them that's too bad.

This is actually my revised rule for issues coming from companies and systematised/sponsored efforts: if you get paid for doing security analysis, you are also on the hook for a fix. Shitting the bed and then leaving it to an unpaid maid is how sociopaths behave.

RE: @lwn@fedi.lwn.net

Seth was the leader of the GNOME Usability project, which led to the creation of the human interface guidelines; the words might have changed over 25 years, but he's one of the people that made the Linux desktop, and we're still walking in his footsteps.

"I don't understand why people in this political and ethical movement related to software development and consumption have strong opinions about the politics and ethics of a bunch of software development tools" is an incredibly nuclear level take that boggles the mind

It's summer, students are at home, and some of them found time and resources to run Comrade Claude on FLOSS projects—likely to build some clout and pad their CV. It goes without saying that if you decide to perform the equivalent of a denial of service on a project's contributors base, you're going to find in the harshest way possible that modern code forges have the ability to ban you and your little LLM friend.

@danirabbit of course you don't want to use heroin from Big Pharma; you should really try heroin synthesised locally, from open sources, instead. Well, you have to ignore where the precursors come from, but other than that it's a lot better for everyone and the environment

RE: @hynek@mastodon.social

As much as I enjoy seeing a pompous startup founder getting owned by their own stupidity, the bit that makes me repeatedly slam my head on my keyboard is:

"After the deletion, I asked the agent why it did it."

The stochastic parrot doesn't know *why*, nor it will answer *why* it did stuff: you just asked an LLM to summarise what it did, and inject some word salad to fill out the steps.

These people are self-deluded fools playing russian roulette with a fully loaded machine gun.

If your FLOSS project self-hosts its issue tracker, may I recommend implementing a rule that redirects any referral coming from reddit to: https://www.myinstants.com/en/instant/fart-with-extra-reverb-63068/

In honour of Patrick Muldoon's passing, I put "Starship Troopers" on this evening. It's still amazing how *unsubtle* the movie is, and that's even before you see Neil Patrick Harris in a SS uniform…

@hughsie@mastodon.social if you didn't even review the patch, and you didn't validate it, then why are you committing it? If you did review the patch, then you're the author, not the agent. The agent is not a person, and cannot claim authorship.

@wwarner@techhub.social the quit() method is on the GApplication class, and it will raise a flag to return immediately from the (blocking) run() method. You can still destroy everything by releasing the reference on the application instance before returning to the OS at the end of your main function, but not everyone does it.

@iain@kolektiva.social the original code of conduct on the wiki appeared around 2006, and since it was voluntary, it was easy to dismiss; things came to a head in 2009 because pvanhoof posted on Planet GNOME that he didn't like the GNOME women outreach programme in the most cringe way possible

@hughsie@mastodon.social there you have it, then: you are the author. Disclosure is meant to help maintainers review your contribution; if this is your project then you should know what you did, and the commit log isn't really going to help you. Unless you want to go through the log in 5 years time, and you need to find a commit that was code assisted and you need to revert specifically for that reason.

Replying to
@hughsie@mastodon.social please don't add these trailers to the commit log. All they do is free advertising in the place that cannot be changed for the rest of the project; and they don't help anybody with reproducibility or historical information, because you cannot reproduce the results even if you, by chance, had access to the model state at the time. If you want to make it clear that you used code assistance, put it in the pull request description.

Replying to
@proficiency that's honestly less of a problem, for me; after all, we all reinvented the wheel—and I am *very* strict about adding stuff to Amberol. I'm more concerned about the fact that a lot of these clones are made with GenAI, and do not lead to sustainable code bases, or to increase in contributions to the platform. And Flathub doesn't even have payment integration, yet; once that arrives, I fear an avalanche of slop coming our way…
