I received the amended Colorado Age Attestation bill.

  • Open source OS's and apps are excluded
  • Code repos are excluded (github/gitlab)
  • Containers are excluded (docker/podman)

I testify Thursday and can use your help! I need your stories about incredible things kids have made thanks to access to open source software. Share here or DM me.

Today, I met with Colorado Senator Matt Ball, co-author of Colorado OS Age Attestation Bill SB26-051.

Sen. Ball suggested excluding open source software from the bill. This appears to be a real possibility.

Amendments are expected for the CA age attestation bill. It's my hope we can move fast enough to influence excluding open source in the CA bill amendments.

No illusions, it's an uphill battle, but we have an open door to advocate for the open source community.

COSMIC has been out for seven months and a lot has happened in that short time. The blog was written as a six month progress report but Frosted Glass took a tad bit longer to refine and I really wanted it in there 😅 https://system76.com/blog/post/cosmic-de-first-seven-months

California amended their AB-1856 Age Attestation law to exclude open source software using the Colorado exemption example.

Thank you to the folks in California advocating for open source.

Update on the Colorado Age Attestation bill: Everyone that participated in the meeting last week submitted proposed changes to the bill. They included good ideas to improve consumer protection and privacy and exempt open source software.

Sen. Ball responded this morning that they'll now draft potential amendments.

I think we're making good progress. I'm off for a ski weekend with the kids. Have a great weekend everyone!

Went to the capitol today to meet Sen Ball, Rep Paschal, Rep Ricks, and three additional Denver constituents with concerns about SB26-051's effect on open source software, privacy, and security.

It was an hour and a half meeting that could have gone longer if it weren't for the building being shut down.

Our concerns were heard and shared. The next step is exchanging and discussing specific language changes to the bill including an exemption for open source software.

COSMIC 1.0.11 has been tagged. There's now a toggle to enable/disable workspace wrapping, file names are selected up to the extension when renaming, fixed an issue with XWayland window resizing on move and more improvements. See the change summary at: https://github.com/pop-os/cosmic-epoch/releases/tag/epoch-1.0.11

Notably, Firefox 150 was also released today. It fixes issues with compositors like cosmic-comp: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2018866

Released on Pop and coming to your distro soon.

Perhaps the most perverse consequence of age verification laws: many require advertising the age bracket of the user to the open web. Children will be known to be children even to those that would exploit that information without regard for any other "safety" law.

Ubuntu 26.04 LTS is getting closer to shipping pre-loaded on @system76@fosstodon.org hardware.

DDOS attacks on Ubuntu infra slowed things down. We built new infrastructure to remove our Launchpad dependency and speed up releases moving forward.

Some folks pointed out language in the SB51 OSS exemption could not include the GPL due to redistribution conditions. Improved the language for clarity.

ARTICLE 30 DOES NOT APPLY TO:

AN OPERATING SYSTEM PROVIDER OR DEVELOPER THAT DISTRIBUTES AN OPERATING SYSTEM OR APPLICATION UNDER LICENSE TERMS THAT PERMIT A RECIPIENT TO COPY, REDISTRIBUTE, AND MODIFY THE SOFTWARE WITHOUT PLATFORM-IMPOSED TECHNICAL OR CONTRACTUAL RESTRICTIONS BY THE PROVIDER OR DEVELOPER ON INSTALLING MODIFIED VERSIONS.

@neal with the way this worked out, I believe we now have a sound template to start working in other states. I haven't found the amended text online but will post as soon I do. Our next step is a letter to the CO reps that we need to pass the bill with these amendments, then adapting that letter to other states and working with the open source community to raise awareness.

One of the coolest things about living in Breckenridge is the mining town history. You can casually hike up to a historic mine and browse through an old blacksmith shop.

@jzb @neal @eff I did catch that and it's one of the more draconian efforts with full verification. I don't expect it to go far but it is scary. Companies that provide verification services are pushing these laws. There is apparently a group of open source projects starting to coordinate. I heard this from the FreeBSD Director and am supposed to receive an invite soon. I don't know who is involved yet. Other projects like RockyLinux have reached out as well as others.

@ryan@social.binarydad.com I suggest playing with options in the Settings app to get a good feel for all the capabilities. Especially settings under Desktop. Then try out auto-tiling and learn a few KB Shortcuts. With that, you'll see how fast, efficient and fun it can be. https://system76.com/support/articles/pop-cosmic-keyboard-shortcuts/?srsltid=AfmBOopLMVuC20Fk_lfIfQfpAb7c1JJKflEk3qwPgmMioBg9awABs5h2
