I like open source tech (#foss, #linux, #fedora), sciences (#astronomy, #biology, #math) and diy (#gardening, #3dprinting, #homelab).
I basically just wanna learn how to do things by myself! I'm currently in #medschool in France (so forgive me if I'm not responding before the weekend).

I speak French 🇫🇷 and English 🇬🇧.

I recently bought a #oneplus6 and successfully installed #postmarketos on it. However, the phone died a few hours later (black screen, responding only to EDL commands), and I couldn't reset it, even with MSM Download Tool. I managed to flash Android back but it won't restart. Do you think it's an error related to my installation or just bad luck ? I really want to try #mobilelinux, so should I buy another OnePlus 6 or 6T and try again ?

@jbz It’s a great time to develop more Linux‑based mobile apps to replace Android, which is becoming increasingly closed. Linux phones are improving every day, but they still lack sufficient developer support. I’ve seen several Android apps recently ported to Linux, and I hope more people will start buying these phones—especially in Europe, where digital sovereignty remains insufficient. You can follow Linux‑mobile accounts such as @furilabs, and @postmarketOS to stay updated!

@Dubikan @jbz @furilabs @postmarketOS The Flx1s is probably the best Linux phone currently available on the market. You can purchase it at https://furilabs.com/

@gay_garstly @jbz Today, with Flatpak, apps are containerized with app‑based permissions. With Waydroid you can even run Android apps in containers. It’s true the OS isn’t as optimized for a phone as Android or iOS, but if more people start using it, especially in the EU, developers could boost performance and build a safe and truly de‑Googled OS.

@neal@social.gompa.me @nextcloud@mastodon.xyz @ChaP@norden.social There are already LibreOffice, OnlyOffice and Microsoft Office, so I don't know how they could have found something better than Euro-Office. There's also Google Docs and Proton Docs so Maybe "Euro docs" but it's definitively not better 😅.

@Antti98 @jbz @jolla I didn’t know that Flatpaks work. I read online that they didn’t work well, depending on which Jolla phone you were using. Anyway, until Jolla open‑sources every app and the UI, I won’t consider buying one of their phones. However, I agree that FOSS alternatives are less ready for public use and therefore, Jolla is probably a good entry point into the Linux open-source ecosystem.

@Antti98 @jbz @furilabs @postmarketOS @jolla I agree, but Sailfish OS has its own app store and there is a lot of closed‑source code (Jolla’s proprietary apps and UI). Jolla’s phones are still Linux phones, but to me it looks like another Android—driven by a company fairer than Google, yet it’s still a company. If the Linux phone can’t run “standard” Linux apps, then you should probably just take an @e_mydata (/e/OS) phone, which isn’t European but is certainly cleaner and more feature‑full.

@poleguy @Dubikan @jbz @furilabs @postmarketOS I just read on reddit (https://www.reddit.com/r/pinephone/comments/ng3fbj/how_to_keep_pinephone_working_during_sleep/) that the device would probably have to be charge every night, and while plugged in it will stay on (even when the screen is off) so the alarm can work. It's far from what android offers but it should work.

How to keep pinephone working during sleep?

@leeloo @dansup Loops limits video length to 3 minutes while Peertube has no duration limit. Additionally, in Loops, you can scroll between videos and (as far as I know) Loops is more lively than Peertube. I've tried in the past to replace YouTube with Peertube but I've never succeeded because I've never found any active instance.

@throwaway@privacysafe.social @itsfoss@mastodon.social that's strange. In that case I don't know why this is appening. But if some malicious code were found in the app, it would be removed from the store.

@throwaway@privacysafe.social @itsfoss@mastodon.social what app-checker? Google one? In that case it will probably warn you for every app you will install outside of the playstore.

@omar@mastodon.bsd.cafe @furilabs@fosstodon.org On the matrix groupchat you can find a lot of pictures and reviews of the new flx1s and there are some videos about the first flx1 on YouTube like this one :

@ChaP@norden.social @nextcloud@mastodon.xyz As for the license, the added rule in the OnlyOffice license which blocked users from forking the project has been removed in Euro-Office and it is backed by Nextcloud which is itself truly opensource. (https://isitreallyfoss.com/projects/nextcloud/)

@frox@tooting.ch @pocketvj@fosstodon.org yeah, same here, I only got the led to turn on during edl flashing and I had to long press every button at once (about 30 sec) to get into edl mode (but no vibration or screen). But the flashing progress randomly stopped and only worked 1 time out of about 20 tries so that's why I suspect some dead component, but then I don't know why edl still responds to some commands.
