Really liking Aegis btw. FOSS software with excellent UI. I had not realised that I could want more settings for an authenticator app, I mostly migrated for better backups. But Aegis has better layout options, an icon pack (that includes pretix, lol), can generate the next code while the current one is still active (no longer waiting for the last seconds to pass!), etc. It's really nice. #aegis #authenticator #totp

I did not realise I had strong feelings on docstrings. I use them sparingly, and while they are a hack, at least they serve a good purpose. I know people have opinions on the placement of line breaks and quotes, but I thought I was above these things. That this was Python programmers yearning for curly-brace level style wars. I was mistaken. I just encountered docstrings written in regular quotes rather than triple quotes and, no, apparently I DO have strong feelings on docstrings. #python

With cheap server upgrades on Hetzner being unavailable, I'm going back to the roots, babyyyy (all my servers have grown swapfiles over the last month. swapon like it's 2008)

The new pip version comes with experimental lockfile support *and* `--uploaded-prior-to` for dependency cooldowns, neat.

It brings me great joy to block my first drive-by AI open source PR guy <3

(not for using AI; for drive-by spamming a PR and then returning with the same PR two weeks later after I closed his first one explaining why it was not suitable to be merged at this point)

Delightful morning reading: “An ssh adventure” (or: smuggling your bashrc onto remote servers)

The perfect amount of unhinged. I was already sold on reading the whole thing and giggling throughout when I got to “The filesystem is basically global state, global state is morally wrong.”

I've already moved my issue tracking off GitHub (only keeping issues there open because it's the easiest place for people to report problems), because the overall GitHub UI has been in steady decline for the past five years or more. I don't mind the Dependabot ecosystem (but I can write update checks of my own). The other big part of GitHub that is hard to leave behind is the Security Advisory process (getting a CVE is just so much easier there), but that's fine.

@scy After using just a bit of SourceHut and running into multiple errors, some of which badly wrapped, I think the whole "our alpha is what other people call production software" is … not wrong but also does not make me want to use this alpha software for my production project. I'll keep an eye on it for when it's out of beta and actually production-ready, though.

@blinry My main issue isn't even relying on GitHub, it's how terrible-very-bad their UI has gotten. Every step they take towards being an SPA (but without really believing in it) makes it more inconsistent, slower, jankier. Just not what I need when I essentially just want to query and change data and do it fast. Before I built my own thing, I used grist, because it's a really cool project, very hackable, very suited to anything data-driven. I wanted a bit more specific smooth UI in the end.

@hukl Mostly because I'm already self-hosting so much stuff, and CI is both burst-y and not much fun to host. My primary business is hosting software, so you could say I should just do that, but also, my primary business in truth is the user support and development for said software, and side quests like "self-host CI" aren't much fun to me. I'd be down to pay for a good CI thing, too, I just want reliability …

ATTENTION, Public Service Announcement: Do not upgrade your npm. Do not upgrade to 5.7.0, released yesterday.

It changes file permissions of /etc, /boot, /user, … when run with sudo. Avoid, duck, cover, whimper.

@xian Thank you, that's quite possibly the best compliment I could wish for! I honestly set out to write this text when I was very frustrated with some aspects, and wanted to not write a rant. (Or at least a productive one.)

And absolutely agree – I'm active in other activist groups too and there is a big overlap in challenges and in skills. Government is probably the closest in some ways, because this being an admin is like being a tiny, low-stakes, low-relevance , unelected government.
