@RupertReynolds@hachyderm.io @rsabourin@pdx.social @RuiSeabra@mastodon.social @pluralistic@mamot.fr I own one of these Curta Calculators. The same model. I drag it out from time to time, when I need to do simple calculations. The square root algorithm is enough of a PITA that I only used it once after learning it.

I'm planning to buy a sailboat soon. Now, I have a Canadian ensign to fly on her.

I'm delighted that #Memphis has the [Flag Center](https://www.flagcenter.com/) so I can buy domestically manufactured flags locally 👍 ... with cash 😋

@cwebber@social.coop Good blog post. It does feel like the fatigue of the long battle has given the attackers an edge. Also, I'm surprised that you mention the ACLU, but not the EFF. Was there a reason for that?

I'm going to get to keep with it, learn how cruising differs from my past experience and see it I can make some portion of the dream work 🤞 ... or, more likely, spend a lot of money and time maintaining a boat I won't be able to use for my intended purpose... just like everybody else who owns a boat 😉⛵

An object lesson in how dissimilar metals behave in salt water. The current owner of the boat had this steel rudder downhaul cable repaired with an aluminum nicropress fitting just a few months ago. When we hauled it out for a survey inspection, it had completely dissolved! 😮

The owner had to scramble to find a rigger, who installed the correct zinc-coated brass nicropress fitting (pictured), and had to pay for an extra hour of travel lift time. 🤷‍♂️

@arx@tech.lgbt @iode@mastodon.online yeah many places, like pharmacies, have prohibitive process unless you have a loyalty card... sorry those have been phased out. No more anonymous barcodes, they want a cell-phone number and other Personally Identifiable information before you get reasonable prices. Don't forget to always go for the deals, or they'll assume brand loyalty, and never offer you sale prices again!

@ACM@mastodon.acm.org welcome! I used to be a member back in the day and still read the occasional public article. I'm sure you're busy seeing things up and were planning to get to it, but just in case... the Mastodon link in the https://www.acm.org/ page footers still point to @TheOfficialACM@noc.social . Yes, that site _does_ indicate the account has moved, so a diligent user can, with some persistence, verify the authenticity of this account. So you might want to update that link, Cc: @mstine@mastodon.sdf.org /1

@davew@mastodon.social @mike@flipboard.social @frankel has a post about having a centralized identity https://mastodon.top/@frankel/109536112569494668 that I think implements something like what you're talking about. It does require hosting a site, or some page you have control over, but only needs a single static page. It would also, probably, be good to include a human readable index page with your rel="me" link (see https://fedi.tips/how-do-i-verify-my-account/ ) to bolster you identity claim going the other way.

I discovered that my 30 year old foul weather gear no longer keeps the rain out during a torrential downpour while having a potential boat purchase surveyed today 🙁☔⛵.

We kept finding little bits of old curled up tape, and were wondering what duct tape nightmare the surveyor might discover, but it turned out to be old seam sealing tape that was crumbling off my jacket 🤦‍♂️

So, it was a relief to discover it wasn't some horrible, hidden, problem with the boat.

I'm sure if happens all the time, but it's a first for me to be awakened by the mooring pendant bumping against the hull. It's so calm out there that all the boats in the mooring field are pointed in different directions. I went up on deck and found that the mooring ball is floating between the main hull and the starboard ama, under the net. It's fine, but a little unnerving. 🫤

@hetoug@fosstodon.org @nixCraft@mastodon.social I had a chance to buy one of those cheap in the mid 1980's. What stopped me was the requirement for 240V 3-phase power. I did buy an old disk wheel printer, that I got working with an assembly program to track the notches on the optical disc sensor and drive the solenoids for the lead screw and hammer, but never got it reliable enough to print more than a sentence or two before an off-by-one count would mess it up. So I doubt I could have gotten the disk to work either.

Even after years of learning to manage my migraines and a good rescue medication, cruising will be a problem. I realized from the start that I wouldn't be able to single-hand cruise, but thought that if I could find crew, that cruising up the coast to visit family in the summers and winter in Savannah would work. Unfortunately this delivery voyage from St. Thomas has made it clear that sleep deprivation and stress can undo all my migraine progress in mere days.
