Audre Lorde's "master's tools" speech was not about tech platforms. So why does tech discourse keep citing it as if it were? I write about what happens when a Black feminist theorist's words get borrowed, stripped of context, and made to do work they were never meant to do.

On The Enshittification of Audre Lorde: "The Master's Tools" in Tech Discourse

Somewhere between Audre Lorde's 1979 speech and contemporary tech discourse, the "master's tools" became a meme. This essay traces what was lost in the translation.

Do yourself a favour and don't read the Mullvad thing, they're just trying to steer the conversation towards free speech. I don't necessarily like that they're free speech absolutists, but that's not the issue here. The issue is simply mullvad makes money, money goes to dumbshit founder who does dumbshit things. there's no separating the art from the artist here, if you buy from Mullvad, you're funding fascists.

New on the blog. Codeberg's members voted to stop hosting mostly AI-generated projects. The freedom worth defending is not the freedom to be taken from, it is the freedom to refuse. https://tarakiyee.com/open-source-is-indefensible/ #OpenSource #OpenSourceGovernance #ReformvsTransformation

The takes of everyone not happy with the Codeberg decision are a joy to read, pure cinema.

Putting the fundamental issues with GenAI aside for a second, I think I see a lot of parallels between self-driving cars and AI-generated programming. People are mostly okay drivers and okay programmers.

But a machine is always going to be faster and more precise in highly controlled enviroments. Except we don't live in highly controlled environments.

The political risk I see is that we start heading towards a world that's a highly controlled environment, a world built for LLMs not humans.

@DavidJBianco@infosec.exchange so, the second benefit where no attacker data left their environment applies retroactively after they've sent the data to the hosted providers?

The more I learn about the economy the more I question whether it's real or not.

I'm surprised not to see technical solutions be centered at the anti-techsolutionist conference. #cablesofresistance

@endolexi I don't totally disagree with you, I'm actively trying to move away from big tech for all the reasons. However we both have technical capital, we can make choices other people can't. When the tool choice becomes the politics then we can't see that anymore. We need to understand the conditions behind tool choice or lack thereof, make those visible and political, and then change those conditions. Its hard and some of that work can happen on Google docs, they can't do shit about it.

@dgold I disagree on both counts. I think the entshitification analysis does something important and needed. I also wouldn't single him out, I'm afraid this an issue within the wider mainstream tech discourse.

@theodoraward I was surprised by how much I found on this phenomenom in my research for the article! Not only other cases, but good analsyis and discussion dissecting it. Helped a lot in formulating this to the tech example.

@thiswomanswerk Thank you, I don't think I've come across afropessmism before and I can already hear the rabbit hole beckoning. I need to find a job where I can read more literature than emails.

@thiswomanswerk Oooh, I only read the abstract so far, but thank you for sharing, I want to find the time to read it. It's good to finally have an actual good reason to understand what fungability is, I've opted to avoid the term so far.

Despite its growth and widespread impact, the core infrastructure that supports OSM is maintained by a small group of dedicated and brilliant individuals. I’m incredibly proud that we are commissioning them to work on essential improvements, helping to ensure the long-term sustainability of this vital project.

Fast forward a decade later, and OSM has grown to have 10 MILLION registered users, rendering such bans simply impractical. But not only that, OSM has proven to be simply an invaluable resource across several industries, academia, public administration, and humanitarian efforts, showing that our common digital infrastructure is better shared than hoarded!

My first interactions with OSM were in a country that, at the time, banned individuals from participating in mapping activities. The project back then was less popular (under 100,000 users), so we had to be really careful in participating in it. I only bring it up because to underline how powerful geospatial data is and how it is often taken for granted these days.

@Edent@mastodon.social I think the issue is compounded by the fact that there is still an influx of contributors to the kernel because of the industry behind it, so those maintainers aren't feeling the heat yet. It's incredibly short-sighted because relying on industry is such a precarious position for any free software project.
