Born at less than 320ppm CO₂. Hmm...

Programmer and bus driver. It's a long story :-)

Based northern UK & Scotland

Europhile, especially since I worked 1½ years in north Holland.

Currently: C, assembly

#Assembly (for fun) on Intel PC and IBM #mainframe (emulated, these days. Download and unzip "TK5" and you can play, as well).

#rexx #PL1 #SAS too.

Also other things, including a compiler for a new language. That should be ready in a decade. Or 2.

@chefx@defcon.social @chrisoliver@indieweb.social @pluralistic@mamot.fr We could use some kind of system where ownership of a movie sold (to own) is registered, and if one company turns evil or goes bust, other members of the scheme make sure it is still available to the buyer. But it would be *huge*, and probably prone to errors.

@jeffowski@mastodon.world @fnord@chaos.social Why? Because not everyone is in the same emotional place as you. I'm in my 60s and generally as hard as nails, but it just happens I'm vulnerable today and I don't need to be both tearful and angry at the fucked-up world my children and grandchildren will be living in, when it's after 10pm and I'm on my way to bed to be up at 6am to do a job that directly affects public safety. Being angry and sleepless is not really an option, see? For other people it's just that most of the social media scumsites jam bad news in our faces all day every day because it generates more clicks for advert revenue, and we like to spend some time on positive stuff.

@kkarhan@c.im @mcc@mastodon.social I'm using a Fairphone 4 running e/OS/ which appears to be utterly Gargoyle-free unless I install the wrong apps from "All lounge". It was more hard work to set up than a typical big name Android phone, but most things are covered, although I haven't found a decent NFC payment app yet--Curve has currently had 6,746 attempts blocked by e/OS/, which regards them as attempted data leaks.

@ameel@mastodon.social I'm surprised anyone would distrust solar at high altitude. Cooler air -> greater efficiency, thinner atmosphere might make a marginal improvement, and if the surrounding terrain is good there will be a longer day at altitude. Not massive improvements I guess, but those differences are in favour. Perhaps people still think in terms like sun=good, so heat=good?

@danielgibert@mastodon.online @pluralistic@mamot.fr If IMA Bank used a mainframe, they had a team dedicated to doing good things for IMA Bank. If they outsource to Gargoyle cloud services, those services don't care about IMA Bank any more than they do about AN Other Bank. And not at all, if they have bigger clients. It's like "We don't care. We don't have to. We're the phone company" all over again. Mainframes are WAY better and I've put my money where my mouth is literally, with my personal accounts on a 1970s MVS 3.8j (effectively "Open Source") running on Hercules. It doesn't sell me. It doesn't lose my stuff, or go offline. It doesn't hold my data to ransome, to prevent me from leaving if I want to. It doesn't flood me with adverts. It just does the thing.

@chefx@defcon.social @chrisoliver@indieweb.social @pluralistic@mamot.fr I grew up with 405 lines, then 625 lines PAL. A well-made DVD is fine for me and I buy the ones I really want to keep, and rip them for a backup in case the disc dies. Same for a lot of music. But I think the streams need the same clear concepts of rental and ownership--progress is when things get better for people, not when they get worse.

@EricAlper@mastodon.social There is the suggestion that schools are being pressured to turn out conformists who aren't bothered to think too much. I've seen signs that it's been happening slowly in the UK since the 1980s.

@pluralistic@mamot.fr Hey, my favourite antisocial media runs on arcane CoSy software written by people* at University of Guelph in the early 1980s :-) Background: common MoDem speeds around that time were 300 bits per second. Not much faster than some people type. Efficiency was crucial :-) *I'm useless at names, but I think one of them was Dave Godfrey

@kevlin Good question! And you remind me of the detective work needed to tie a line on a bank statement via PayPal to an item bought on Ebay*, or to tie any courier delivery message with its purchase, so I can know what's arriving. Every purchase generates at least 6 e-mails that don't obviously belong together. The Ebay seller account doesn't match the physical shop name, which doesn't match the registered business name. *I love everything else about Ebay, getting better stuff from genuine small sellers, a pleasure in complete contrast with the 'evil river' monster Amazon that Cory Doctorow can describe better than I can.

@mcc@mastodon.social As I remember it, there is a reasonably strong correlation between the decline in pirates and rising CO2, if we allow a number of years delay between the two. I'm going for the "correlation is causation" fallacy in a big way here, and saying "We need more pirates" for our climate, as well as for their handy eye patches!

in the words that it was forming,
and the sign said "the words of the prophets are written on the subway walls, and tenement halls,
and whispered in the sounds of silence."

It says "Mundus sine caesaribus" (roughly "A world without kings")

I didn't think it would be that controversial!

@bishop6@mastodon.online @pluralistic@mamot.fr CIX (runs CoSy) is a bit niche these days, but I have contacts there going back years and I often get a different POV there. Cliff Stanford built Demon Internet in cix:tenner-a-month with backing from a bunch of cixen who fancied local dial-up access. Terry Pratchett was pterry@cix and Douglas Adams was DNA, from memory. Various UK tech authors, too. I get the same vibe but bigger from the fediverse, which is why I'm here :-)

#AIskepticism are there any #AIskeptics who would like to view some Smalltalk slop?

It makes me itch, but I felt the need to see what I'm dealing with, so I got Claude to help me write a kind of Sketchpad clone in Pharo Smalltalk.

Surprisingly, it works OK as far as it goes, but it seems to be too big for what it does. The best and the worst of it is I didn't know any Smalltalk when I started, and I still don't know enough now to judge.

Please feel free to reply, ignore me, or reply by DM.
