About 25 years ago while on vacation, my father-in-law invited me to join a weekly morning bike ride on a local rail trail. A group of about 30 retirees would ride 10 miles to a small town for breakfast and then ride back. I was impressed by how fit all these “old people”were, especially a fast 84-year-old guy who had heart surgery a few decades before. Today I rode that trail for the first time since my own surgery and was inspired to follow the example of the 84-year for the next few decades.

This makes me happy. My mother-in-law has very advanced Alzheimer’s but until recently could still knit several baby hats a day. My wife entered one in the local fair and it won 4th place! Once we get the actual ribbon and the $1 in winnings we will take it to her.

I’m waking up and seeing everyone’s great comments! There seems to be a lot of passion about what brought people here, which I understand and feel also. Almost half the respondents came and stayed around Nov 2022 and many earlier ones ramped up engagement around then. Later joiners point out the Reddit migration.
The through-line, it seems, is that people have self-selected into this network, and stayed, based on common beliefs about free expression. Seems important. #mastodon #Fediverse

Some times this web cam bot catches the best sunsets. Lake Michigan never disappoints. I love how you can see the silhouettes of all the people who have walked out on the jetties to watch the sunset.
