I’ve just brought back an old project I created in memory of Aaron Swartz: his Open Access Manifesto, available in 25 languages thanks to contributions from people around the world. https://openaccess.eza.link Feel free to send corrections or contribute missing languages. I wish Aaron were still here to stand with us through the challenges ahead. Maybe it’s time for a new manifesto, this time with a message for the Big Tech gurus. #AaronSwartz #OpenAccess #BigTech

AI is reshaping journalism - but what does that mean for democracy? In a new #WJDS essay, Weizenbaum director Christoph Neuberger examines AI’s role in producing reliable knowledge and shaping public opinion. AI can support truth-seeking, but its lack of transparency limits collective scrutiny. The essay also explores risks and opportunities for democratic deliberation. ➡️ https://doi.org/10.34669/wi.wjds/6.2.6 #AI #Journalism #Democracy #Media #SocialScience #OpenAccess #research @freieuniversitaet@berlin.social

I’ve been building a local-first humanities library on my TrueNAS NAS, Satchel: an offline archive of public-domain books, Project Gutenberg materials, and primary religious and historical texts. The collection includes Jewish sources such as the Mishnah, Babylonian Talmud, and Rashi/Ramban commentary; early Christian writings; Islamic, Hindu, and Buddhist texts; and volumes from The Sacred Books of the East. The goal is preservation, local access, and comparative study: keeping important texts searchable and available without relying on a subscription, a platform, or an internet connection. I’m organizing it carefully by tradition, work, translation or edition, and commentary so that the texts remain useful rather than becoming a pile of files. A personal library should still work when the cloud, a website, or a company disappears. #TrueNAS #SelfHosting #DigitalPreservation #PersonalLibrary #AncientTexts #OpenAccess #Homelab

Vladimir Moskovkin proposes an interesting "reform model for scholarly communication that combines elements of centralized access —based on adapting the Soviet VINITI experience to the digital environment— with decentralized Diamond Open Access platforms." PS: This is the first time I've seen anyone draw the Soviet #VINITI model into #OpenAccess / #ScholComm discussions. Here's some background on the model, if it's new to you. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VINITI#Centralization #Decentralization #DiamondOA

2️⃣/2️⃣ The Jules Rimet Cup crowned football's greatest champions from 1930 to 1970. After Brazil was awarded the trophy permanently, it was stolen from the Brazilian Football Confederation's headquarters in 1983 and has never been recovered, making it one of sport's greatest unsolved mysteries. #WorldCup #FootballHistory #SoccerHistory #ArtDeco #PublicDomain #OpenAccess
