@xgranade@wandering.shop To expand on this: without open source software, as well, I'd never have had the opportunity to gain a useful skill set to help myself. I dropped out of high school because my home life was abusive and worked a lot of low paying jobs, for years. Having access to free UNIX-type systems and getting to learn about them helped me a lot when going into graduate school, and helped me even more when I was able to get my first post-school job at Cray. If I had had to pay for compilers, development environments, etc, there's just no way I ever could have afforded it.
Getting to play with programming helped me build a better base for the math I learned during school (a base I lacked from having a difficult relationship with school from said bad home life). So the idea of free, open information and software that enables and teaches means a lot to me, personally.
