Today I realised my Very Big Gnarly Difficult Capital P Problem was actually three very simple problems¹ in a trench coat, so I give you this gem.

I have a non-optional social obligation today which by itself is fine, but I also have been procrastinating dying my hair so now I have to combobulate and dye my hair AND put on my human face AND also face the Outside and People and frankly all I want to do is drink rosé on my balcony in shorts and a tanktop beholden to no one is this so much to ask for really

@luna@post.airsi.de that's exactly what I'm saying: not a drug. A magical amulet that makes you think you're smart. A prosthetic is a wrong analogy. Prosthetics are needed, and useful, and empower people. To compare an AI to a prosthetic, or even a crutch is disrespectful to people who need these tools to function. No. LLMs are just evil doodads that rot your brain and whisper sweet nothings into your ears in the deep of the night. They're not valuable; they make you *believe* they are.

@luna@post.airsi.de this is where we're going to diverge. You're not answering my question and just trying to flood me with your anecdotal experience of using AI and others around you who are using AI. This is a exactly what I said in my original toot: you're wearing the amulet, you believe it's useful to you, and you're adamant to recruit. Alas I'm not an amulet wearer and will never agree. I hope it works out for you, and good luck!

I love people on here posting "very obviously good things to do for inclusion" — not just because the posts are good and make me think about how I can be a better person — but also because toots like that are an irresistible honeypot for total wankers and I get to go through the replies and block them en masse 🎉

I'm sorry that the OP takes the first hit, they shouldn't have to go through it. But outing and blocking wankers is for the good of the community and I thank them for their sacrifice 🙇‍♀️

@luna@post.airsi.de and further still to drive the distinction: I speak of generative AI and large language models. Machine Learning is a superset of these terms, and it's extremely useful. To go back to my metaphor, there's good magic objects, and cursed magic objects. If your lore skill is not high enough to know which one is which, you'll wind up using a cursed object and think it's good for you.

@luna@post.airsi.de and to go further, people aren't "infected" with LLMs. It's not a disease. It's not communicable. There's no direct physical hurt, and also no doctors, no cures, and no vaccines. People don't seek help for something they believe is helping them. We must be careful with our language around all this, even in metaphor. (I say this fully aware of my own metaphor and taking my own liberties, but there's seriousness, and there's jest.) https://www.techpolicy.press/we-need-to-talk-about-how-we-talk-about-ai/

@luna@post.airsi.de I'm feeling generous today so I'll assume that there's some sort of shorthand you're using I don't understand. Can you explain what you mean by "puppygirl hacker's magic discourse" and "handwaving" in this context? As I said already I'm not dismissive of ML, nor its technical capabilities. What I'm tooting about is a warning about cognitive impact of LLMs as they're commonly deployed. I also have an issue, separately, calling LLMs a prosthetic. If you want to address that I'm all ears.

Help needed: Joys of running a mail server, right. I have a postfix/dovecot setup and SMTP locked down to require authentication to send emails but I'm getting spoofed sender spam emails. You know the kind: email looks like it's coming from your own mailbox and is sent to your own mailbox, and threatens with reputation damage unless you pay. With SMTP locked down I was surprised I'm still getting them. Lo! Behold! they're using LMTP. Any clues on how to stop these? #infosec #SelfHost

@diazona@techhub.social @ainmosni@social.ainmosni.eu I would do it with the object "attuning" - let the player know their PC's stats are getting drained, but offer a stronger benefit from the amulet. Eg: drains -1 WIS and -1 INT but its fine, it gives you +3 INT it's an obvious net benefit! Repeat with obvious benefit every time it drains more stats. Then "amulet loses attunement" - you lose all benefits but retain the damage to your stats, but that's ok, keep wearing it, it will attune again. Watch bad decisions roll in 🍿

@LizzieSpeaks@lor.sh splitting is the way to go, but it's more like a ficus: you trim at an appropriate nodule and then plant away. They're very generous, especially it you already have an "air" root going.

Replying to
@LizzieSpeaks@lor.sh and monstera is amazingly manageable if you split it every other year. I have given away three monstera children and kept my "monther" under 2.5 meters tall over 10 years through careful trimming and replanting. If you want them big, they will be, otherwise it's in your hands.

Replying to
@LizzieSpeaks@lor.sh if you want to get super advanced then you split them without an air root, but with rooting compound and instead of 60%-80% chance of success you take about 30%. But bigger leaves and nicer for snazzy Instagram photos. I'm totally judging.

Replying to
@LizzieSpeaks@lor.sh if you're taking it from a nursery look for a tall but slender plant with early showing of leaf splitting, maybe 3 to 5 leaves, no less than 2ft tall, some air root behaviour. That's a plant that will survive being moved in the winter.
