@jjcelery@mastodon.ie The monster plant is to big for my plant room. But I'm totally buying a Pilea when I get paid on Wednesday. Budget be damned. Do you think customs would really let me send you a begonia?

@jjcelery@mastodon.ie Oh, then it's probably root rot--which is, sadly, not fixable. I would get another one and not tell her its her replacement, but rather a friend to help her feel young.

@jjcelery@mastodon.ie Sounds great! One of my orchids just started making a new stem for flowers so in a month or two I will have orchid pictures to share.

@jjcelery@mastodon.ie Here's the begonia as it was in 2019. I've had it since 2013, amazingly.

@jjcelery@mastodon.ie Lol, I have rooting compound. I will make baby plants for the neighbors. Not everyone likes begonias.

@jjcelery@mastodon.ie Well, this was my first year growing them on the balcony. I put beneficial mites on them to eat the thrip larvae. Then, when I brought them inside, a bunch of gnats hatched. But I didn't buy more beneficial mites. Instead, I sprinkled some anti-gnat pesticide. That must have killed the good mites. So, then the bad mites took over. I will never do that again. I will buy the beneficial mites that eat strawberry mites and two spotted mites. I didn't check under the microscope which one it was because I was exhausted at that point.

@jjcelery@mastodon.ie I lost about 10% of the bare root baby plants I bought, which is pretty normal. I will care more next fall and really prepare them for the transition indoors for the winter.

@jjcelery@mastodon.ie These are fort laramie strawberries I grew last summer. I was going to overwinter them in my apartment but mites killed them :( I will have to start a new crop in January.

@jjcelery@mastodon.ie Lol, I definitely took care of the fruits they produced, all right. I think I gave away 2 or three fruits and the rest all went in my belly.

@jjcelery@mastodon.ie OMG they're so cute! I must have one. I have a metal money tree w/ fake coins and a traditional money tree plant. Here it is with a trailing begonia behind for scale.

@jjcelery@mastodon.ie lol, No! Well, the best I can recommend is changing the soil and the pot that it's in. I would use a coir-based potting soil and add pool filter (quartz) sand. You can make the soil 25-33% sand.

@jjcelery@mastodon.ie Do you just trim the leaves that are getting too big and then split it once a year like a hosta?
