RE: @AltTextHealthCheck@mastodon.social

Good job folks, this puts us in the top 10 of servers for alt text.

.art is the team to beat - and in fairness, that's a ton of alt text given their topic

mastodon.social

Alt Text Health Check: "Results from tracking 32,630 images across 1,490 …" - Mastodon

Hi everyone! Please exercise patience as we weather the wonderful storm of people joining from Twitter.

The next few days might be a bit rocky. We've had thousands of people sign up the past few days.

You may experience slowdowns, delayed emails, delayed notifications, and some lag on your timelines. This will improve in time.

Thanks to a community member who wanted to show appreciation for the mods and has made a donation to Medicins sans Frontiers in our name.

Sound job.

Step 2 has gotten us under 180GB of database storage. At this stage Mastohost are happy to keep us on the current rate, so for now, we're grand! No price increase. No activation of the "Remote content retention period" feature to kill old remote posts en masse, without differentiation.

We have run Step 1, getting us from 280GB to about 230GB Next we are doing Step 2, which will clean remote posts older than 18 months which have not been interacted with by our users.

Relative to this conversation, we will start running some housekeeping tasks this week to cut down on stored messages. Current DB size is 283 GB. Step 1: run a Mastodon script that removes posts older than 90 days, which are not from followed accounts and have not been interacted with Step 2 (likely warranted): run the same script but include followed accounts, posts older than 1 year We'll see what size things after that, these will be running in the background for days.

As someone asked about legal jurisdictions for mastodon.ie:

Mastodaoine CLG is registered in the Republic of Ireland.

Servers are provided via Mastohost and are located in OVH facilities in France.

People posting themselves in sexual situations, for fun or profit, is still fine, once appropriately CW'd etc, as has been standard for a while. Boosting such "made safe" posts is also fine, and we'll not be telling you whose account you can interact with. Mods will not be asking anyone to break their anonymity for "proof"

Step 2 may make things appear a little janky sometimes, scrolling an external users timeline could look a bit staccato once you go past the event horizon. However this method will not prevent older posts from "reappearing" if boosted, etc.

RE: @Mastodon@mastodon.social

Mastodon 4.5 is now on the server, lots of new things including quote posting, like this example.

Remember, you can block quote posting of your posts at the account and single post levels if you wish to do so, as per: https://blog.joinmastodon.org/2025/09/introducing-quote-posts/#controls

@triploidtree@mastodon.ie @xanna@mastodon.ie If left on, the admin setting would greedily delete any post that is old enough, even if the server only saw it for the first time yesterday. It could easily feel broken. Theoretically, we could turn the setting on for one day, and then turn it off after, and see what that does.

Hello to any new or nearly-new members!

This account is largely used for announcements, but if you want to ask any general questions, if you mention @masto_ie_support@a.gup.pe in a comment, a bunch of people will see it.

There's no silly questions, this is a different thing and there's always stuff that won't be obvious.

@faduda@mastodon.ie @Des_egan@mastodon.ie Yes. Every post you see when logged into .ie is itself stored on the .ie server. Our follows and replies and so on serve as instructions to the server software for what posts it should retrieve and store. If we used the method above, you wouldn't see remote posts before x data any more.

@jjcelery@mastodon.ie far as I can tell it's based on the original post date, so it is quite brutal in this context.

There may be a way of doing less brutal cleanup using command line tools, but I think these tend to be quite piecemeal.

@xanna@mastodon.ie yep. A remote post is a post you can see when logged into .ie that doesn't come from .ie They get stored on our server before you see them. This can be a result of boosts, follows, or replies to a post you are looking at. If you are scrolling a user's timeline but they're on eg: .social, you are viewing their posts which are stored on .ie If we delete remote posts after x days, that scrollback will stop after x days.

@2legged@mastodon.ie well it hasn't come up because our hands are tied, but we have no policy against long posts, should the day come it's easy to switch on.

@2legged@mastodon.ie we can't change that at the moment unfortunately. Our service provider always uses an unmodified version of the Mastodon code, and changing that requires editing the code before restarting the server. It keeps things affordable but means we have a bit less leeway on stuff like that. Hopefully some day it is changed to be an admin config.

@faduda@mastodon.ie it's quite brutal, it just deletes stored remote posts, as far as we can see, based on when the original post was created. The bill if we don't get the DB smaller would be about €738 pm compared to €447
