Took a ride around the Aichi reservoir for some light cardio this morning. The water level is pretty low as you can see. Thundershowers are nice and all, but we could really use a typhoon or two.

Biking to Sakushima again today, I met a Kuroneko van at a blind corner near the ferry terminal that I approached too quickly. Stopped just fine, but I locked the back wheel and blew out a tire. I laughed and waved the all-clear to the driver, who seemed utterly disinterested and trundled on his way. A sew-up puncture sounds like a shot, and a couple came out of their house to see what was up. Had a nice chat with the husband while setting a spare, and made the ferry on time!

@ascentale @xtaran @bikenite A1: Nagoya. Before lithium batteries came out, I was a fan of hub dynamos. I even have a wheel for my tubular-tire road bike strung to a Shimano generator hub. But the high capacity batteries have changed that. They save weight, they're simpler, they're less fragile, and there's not much trade-off against those advantages.

@partim@social.tchncs.de A companion curiosty from Japan: National Route 350 spans Sado Island, with car ferries carrying traffic to and from the island in both directions. (It may be common elsewhere, but it was new to me.)

@amiserabilist I first saw the word "hurdy-gurdy" in the Ambrose Bierce short, "My Favorite Murder." I had no idea what it meant, but from the context I assumed it was something vaguely obscene. It was many years later that I learned it was simply a musical instrument!

@sellathechemist In university negotiation competitions, teams receive points for reaching an agreement within the allotted time; but in the real world, parties negotiate with their best alternative to a negotiated agreement (BATNA) in mind, and there's no time limit.

@SecureOwl ~"Ours is a forward-leaning vision for autonomous airline services driven by next-gen agentic AI. The many layers of spurious regulation covering the necessary technologies make it impossible to give a firm timeline for commercial deployment of our systems, which are already 200-250% safer than human-piloted aircraft in our own testing, but if things go well, within this year or early next."~

@adub So … applying a critical path management framework, demanding that postal services—business communication itself—must turn a profit will involve constraints on the service, and that in turn will make business activity that it would have enabled vanish. You're literally shrinking the market. It's both anti-socialist and anti-capitalist at the same time.

It's time the Trump Administration abandon its self-imposed restraint and explore fresh options to break the stalemate over the Strait of Hormuz. Available measures are burnings in effigy, stabbing of pins into voodoo dolls, coordinated pulpit condemnations, particularly nasty gossip, emphatic stamping of feet and, as a measure held in reserve, hamburgers with special sauce hurled at the wall with overwhelming force.

@mathewi@journa.host Looks pretty cramped in that stadium. Is tearing down the remainder of the White House to make more room an option? The 250th anniversary of the country and the 80th birthday of its supreme religious figure only come around once, it's okay to splurge a little.

@mjg59@nondeterministic.computer No one seems to bring up the argument by Harold Demsetz that putting everything under private ownership everywhere is the way to solve these problems. In terms of policy, that seems more like the spot where things started going off the rails? Demsetz' piece, which is also, shall we say, a product of its time, came out a year before Hardin's.
