I would walk 500 miles
And I would walk 500 more
Just to be the man who doesn't
Have to use teams any more

I think it's because a lot of people know and just accept @cloudflare protects botters and scammers of all kinds.
Kind of a mob style service tho if you ask me.

The alternatives to relying on the honour system don't reduce to "do nothing". There aren't only two options. Advocating for a "trust us to be well behaved bro" model amidst the largest breakdown of that exact thing in web standards is, to put this politely, out of touch.
Naming and shaming, defederating the scumbags, etc., are all valid ways of dealing with these problems. Other more aggressive approaches unfortunately lead to closed off communities, which are counter to what many people believe the internet should be.

Seems to be attempting to solve the "problem" of not enough corporate spying on the fediverse.

As you note, this is highly location dependent. I generally agree people are unaware of how widespread charging infrastructure is though.

Air Canada was found to be bound by the information a chatbot gave out regarding bereavement flight discounts, even though it was wildly wrong.

Ostensibly your website is the source of truth and if your chatbot gives out valid ridiculous discount codes (or really any incorrect information) that shouldn't be on the customers but rather your inept software deployment.

See broader website hosting for why the honour system is no way to develop web standards.

It also has the distinction of having the largest island in a lake on an island in a lake in the world (recursion intended), and it's called Treasure Island.

Man this reminded me of a story I was told by someone after delivering an OSINT basics talk: the person told me that they had school projects in elementary school that were like "take a bunch of photos of your family and pets and house and make a little website for your family." These were then of course posted at live URLs for everyone to see.
There's an astounding number of reasons to want to not plaster your kid's face everywhere you're able, and it really sucks that people try to insist on stuff like that when kids are still just learning how the world works, let alone figuring out who they are.

It's also light enough on details to be suspicious.

Reasons for canceling:
[ ] I subscribed to the wrong plan.
[X] It's too expensive.
[X] I don't want to pay a subscription fee and still get ads.
[X] 2026 isn't offering me what I expected.

"I'm gonna fuck with the tech bringing enjoyment to a room full of drunk hackers and anarchists" seems like quite the move.

Yep, this was very useful for spotting typos in a field you can't see the contents of.
It could be done securely but I would've bet there were problems with it.

Gonna miss going to @NorthSec@infosec.exchange this year.
Is #SOMO a thing (sadness of missing out)?

It's still a human, it's just shifted to the decision-making ones that mandate use of these systems.

Nah, the root cause is the decision to grant access to a box of randomness to do this kind of thing.

I enjoyed that window of time where every Sony phone seemed to come with some variation of a "please pick up the phone" song, like this: https://www.zedge.net/ringtones/ae7f76d2-9c79-32c2-b64c-a0745dceec00
Or this:

It must have slid out of fashion at some point, which is a shame.

FOMO marketing seems to be all there is anymore in tech.
Sucks in the short to medium term.
