Horribly obvious ChatGPT writing including the classic "This isn't X; it's Y" all over the place and a claim that ADB was open... on a Linux based device? It's a shame too because it's a genuinely interesting situation, but the AI slop writing is horrible to get through and makes the story look much more involved and long than it actually is.

That's one of the most outlandish ideas I've heard, and it completely ignores a basic tenet of computer security: if an attacker has physical access to the machine, you're already fucked to begin with. There's literally no planning around this kind of scenario, except for blocking USB devices like most high-security-minded places should already do anyway.

Yeah, let's randomize its position after every click, so that the user has to play Windows Start osu! every time they want to launch an app. And even then, you're forgetting that you don't need the mouse emulation at all. Just keyboard emulation will do: "hit" Win+R, "type out" the executable path (magically knowing which drive letter you'll be assigned) and then "hit" Enter. Bob's your uncle.

@karlauerbach@sfba.social Ahahaha that'd a great story! And hey, if it works, what's wrong with it, right? :) Surprisingly there's still some pretty silly ways to go around privilege limitations. Until recently, one way to escalate and run something as administrator on Windows was to open the Character Map application, click a menu option to load a custom character and then put the path to the desired executable on the folder path textbox of the file picker and hit Enter. Boom, running as Admin.

@freddy Have you been able to execute the exploit provided in the post? On a test rig it fails with "Address family not supported by protocol". Kernel version 6.19.11.

@valpackett@social.treehouse.systems What DE/WM are you using? I'm on KDE and lately I've been having an issue where my Firefox window will freeze up like yours, and the way to get it back to normal is to:

1. Create a new tab or click an existing tab (the screen will not update, this is expected)
2. Minimize Firefox, move the mouse cursor away from the Firefox icon in the taskbar to avoid rendering a preview
3. Wait 5 seconds
4. Restore the Firefox window

Give it a try and see if it helps!
