Gotta love how the options for RSS readers on desktop for Linux come down to:

  • A E S T H E T I C but features are mid and it's probably broken
  • Ugly as sin, has all the features, but you need to be a CIA intelligence analyst to understand it
  • Thunderbird

What if courts decided that AI models trained on public data should be publicly owned resources?

What if everyone received a dividend from the use of AI models for commercial activities e.g. through a state-run fund?

(sorry, rare AI post, writing an article about the weird economics of software development)

Just wanted to flag that small Hetzner VPSs cost the same as an AWS EC2 t4g.nano and have 2gb of RAM instead of the hilariously low 500mb on EC2.

They also adhere to German data protection standards (stricter than GDPR alone).

Likely a VERY good choice if you don't want to use your own hardware but want to publicly expose services to the internet.

Yesterday I learned that #Vim and #neovim have workspaces, but most people don't use them because they're called "tabpages"...

Only one neovim extension supports native tabpage use (tabby); most replace the tabline with a buffer overview, which imho just clutters the screen.

This probably says something profound about familiarity vs innovation in what people find "intuitive".

@geolaw @Coho if AI researchers were sharing datasets then this would reduce the load on websites likewise if RAG for e.g. AI search results were optimized to use local caching rather than actually fetching the latest version of sites (it probably already does to a degree, but not sure how much...) note that both of these are easily achievable within an academic context, but not a free market one

Replaced a broken mixer tap in my shower this morning.

I guess this technically counts as maintaining and improving production pipelines?

I believe you find life such a problem because you think there are good people and bad people. You're wrong, of course. There are, always and only, the bad people, but some of them are on opposite sides.

Been reading "How Linux Works" by Brian Ward and it makes me want to install Arch / Gentoo / LFS despite knowing that this is a terrible idea for a computer I want to y'know, use. How do people deal with systems they just want to play with for sysadmin stuff? VMs / containers? Homelab? I have hardware I could play with. #homelab #linux #arch #gentoo #lfs

Have been investigating library and information science resources out of a long term personal interest.

Disturbingly, many online resources shut down in the 2010s and the only ones which remain seem to be niche academic journals.

Any librarians know what's up with the discipline seemingly dying right as it should be thriving? Quality information is harder to find than ever and we are swamped with garbage.

Rearranging my chaotically organized notes and may look into using Johnny Decimal. I like zettelkasten in principle but I suck at maintaining indexes and JD seems more compatible with how I use neovim.

YouTube blocked me for using the Distraction Free YouTube plugin. (I was fine with the ads, but not the dark patterns).

So I installed LeechBlock NG instead.

Have fun getting zero revenue. 👍

When I was younger courses on basic computer skills (mostly for older people) seemed like a big deal.

Do people still teach this? Or do we just assume everyone is computer literate to some degree?

I wonder if there's room for a Linux version. Most 'beginner' Linux resources seem to target people who already have substantial technical skills.

@vaguelytagged graphics programming in general is like this, this unlocked memories of getting a basic 2d demo working in OpenGL (C++) one reason why people (indie devs) get drawn to using Godot / Unity3d for programming instead of rolling their own

Added isso comments to my blog at last! Took about half a day of work to get everything sorted, so not so bad.

Happy because I can avoid paying Disqus, ads, third party tracking, etc.

(moderation queue is enabled to deal with spam; article on the whole slightly messy process coming soon)

@lmgenealogy@mstdn.ca #rclone has some support for #protondrive. Sadly someone will need to open a shell to get it working, but I use rclone mount (cache mode full) a lot for dealing with remote files. For distro, Ubuntu, Mint, Fedora are all solid for general use and fairly beginner friendly. https://rclone.org/

I might just be paranoid but based on a toot I just read and a few profiles I have seen, I feel like some not-insignificant proportion of users are unannounced AI bots cosplaying as average fediverse people. Has anyone done research on this?

@hmiron For me one of the most interesting take aways here is that companies are targeting public perception of LLMs by the adversarial method. I used to work with expert systems chatbots, which are more deterministic. Thus, when they fail they just fail. It's very uh "interesting" that introducing randomness has taken us from Cleverbot, which was a joke, to LLMs, which people consider "intelligent", within 10 years.

@vaguelytagged If you just want to get something running it's ok, you can try Pygame or something more production ready like SDL/SFML. I used to use Allegro. Had fun with Haxe back in the day but not sure how relevant it is in this post-Flash era

Also, good example PR to show contributing to FOSS doesn't have to be big or dramatic to be useful and get merged 🙂

@oschonrock@mastodon.social Awesome in particular has the problem that its config is scripted and you need to write your own configs. It's not as accessible as sway or hyprland; qtile is a better comparison. Actually, qtile would probably be able to handle what you need, but again you'll be writing your own config.
