#Windows experts, can you answer this without trying:
How many times do you need to press the down arrow to select C:\Users\Public?

You know what would make #Mastodon even better? Making the post composition window larger than the post reading frame.
I'm old enough that even with reading glasses, my #eyesight needs the composition window larger so that I can locate the cursor accurately when editing. I don't need to edit other people's posts.
Make the composition window text at least as large as the featured post text, maybe even larger, not the size of the thread text.

Self checkout. Person of a poor eyesight tries to desperately find a QR code to scan. At a very visible, prominent, in-your-face place is an ad for Minecraft. And guess like what a Minecraft zombie looks like to non-nerdy person? Yep. Did not scan either.

We're reworking how settings are organized in Thunderbird Desktop and would love your thoughts.
Take our short survey, 10-15 minutes tops. No trick questions, no wrong answers, and your feedback goes straight to the designers.

Funny, if they'd just given out a "download for free" coupon code, or let you delete it with a click, it probably would've been widely seen as positive.
Just goes to show how a lack of control in the situation can feel like an abusive user experience. But I'm sure they learned their lesson…

Most people mistake information density for insight. Cramming every metric into one chart just spikes cognitive load and hides the actual story. The best visualizations prioritize clarity over completeness. Less is usually more when you want people to actually understand the data.

Most designers obsess over minimalism but forget that too much whitespace can actually increase cognitive load. Efficiency isn't about hiding features. It is about grouping information so the brain processes it faster. Stop stripping away utility in the name of a clean look.

Nuxt + tailwind and a lil elbow grease = a beautiful Loops Help Center powered by markdown/mdx ✨
You may notice the Support Tickets button and personalization, while this is a central service, we use a clever method to link back to the source server and generate the avatar, as if the user never left their instance.

The fediverse becomes more accessible and easy to use when we hide the complexity behind familiar and trusted flows and better user experiences.
If we want to save people from walled gardens, we need to provide a more frictionless onboarding experience, and empower them with privacy friendly discovery based on services and tools like Starter Kits and the People Directory!
No contact book uploads. No SMS verification. Just one tap auth and powerfully simple user interfaces

I can sometimes obsess over the tiniest details, because attention to detail matters.
My most recent example: Loops DMs don't need to render the mentions in the message bubble. It just looks better without them.
They do provide important context sometimes, so they are available when you need them, with a tooltip popover.
No detail is too small when you put the user experience first. 🚀

ICYMI: The fediverse has an onboarding tool to help people find the ideal platform.
It does need work though, it's powered by FediDB and is open source.

how bad does technology have to get? how much will we allow it to destroy the climate? every piece of modern tech and software is just going down the toilet, #UX -wise
this is getting ridiculous to the point of parody
There is something to be said about conditioning and data liberation wrt/ this exchange.
Platforms conditioned people to think that the companies own the data and that there is nothing a person can be done about it. Maybe solvable by paying some data-ransom.
It can be either by design [plug any big-enough corp here] or by crappy #UX like in the case of #Strava here.

My friend knew what they wanted to do. But because there is no button, obscure tech jargon a just heaps of half-arsed #UX treatments, they thought that there is no way to do what they wanted (there isn't btw: they don't use computer & there is no export button on iOS), they had to lean onto the wisdom of the authority (me) to figure out how to do this extremely trivial thing instead doing it on their own.
Really nice talk by @scottjenson@social.coop about desktop user experience and a potential evolution for OpenSource desktop environments.
