Democracy is a numbers game by definition. So to eliminate a major source of malignant misinformation for say 90% people who can't be bothered to circumvent the geoblock, would destroy the network effect that is so core to any social network's power.

I installed niri with Dank Material Shell, then it complained about needing a newer Quickshell for "idle detect => suspend", so I upgraded to qs-git, and the machine started leaking so much memory, it's all over my floor now... 😂

Q: Linux compositors / tiling WMs:

- I have 2x27" monitors, and have used GNOME for many years

- I am a big user of workspaces: One activity per workspace, *ACROSS BOTH MONITORS*

- I want to seriously give a (wayland?) WM a go, and have tried hyprland and niri

- I cannot seem to capture my mental model / workflow with these WMs. I love the tiling (clean, space efficient + KB driven), but the workspaces are *PER MONITOR*

What am I missing?

Is that "nanny state", or is that recognising that X is deliberately manipulated to be a malignant anti-democratic cancer? Porn for kids.... Nice, but....

- didn't like the nearly 1GB "update download" after a fresh install from a 1GB live ISO - odd for a "rolling release"?

- don't like gcc 14.2 when 15 has been out for a year. No gcc15 package either. But clang is on v22?

Seems the "rolling" but not "bleeding edge" mantra is taken "particularly seriously" for certain packages.

At this point Debian Stable and Ubuntu 26.04 LTS have more up to date gcc by a whole major version. ...

Shame... 🤔

This sort of feature benefits from the absolute coordinate system that X gives you, that's why it was more common in the X era WMs. I am not obsessed with Wayland, and think the advantages are far less clear now that it is having to actually support a real and broad set of use cases. However, it it where the momentum is, which is important.

@kattascha Finde die Begründung in dem Zitat sehr weit hergeholt. Nicht falsch verstehen, die Behauptung, dass man durch Töchter einfache Empathie lernt ist traurig, lächerlich und einfach unwahr. Aber das heißt nicht, dass "Männer" erst Frauen als nicht Sexualobjekte wahrnehmen können, nachdem sie eine im jungen Alter kannten. So krank sind die allermeisten männlichen Gehirne dann auch wieder nicht. Eher ein weiteres "Sensationszitat" um den Artikel interessanter zu gestalten.

@ulrichkelber richtig.. Interessant dass Wedium und W Social beide auf volle Nutzerverifikation setzen...?! Ich sehe Vorteile, aber kann mir auch vorstellen dass so das Wachstum sehr beschränkt wird, und viele Leute unter social media eine gewisse Pseudonymität verstehen.

Which are perhaps structurally relatively simple? In the case of X/twitter (see elsewhere) it might be, because the power of a network is proportional to N^2. What makes the OSA very very stupid is that it subjects the 90% of the adult public who are using these services (ie porn etc) legally to a massive invasion of privacy with signficant risk of damaging data leaks by dodgy third parties.
