Butterbian XFCE 0.5.0 is out.
The big one: optional full-disk encryption. One checkbox in the installer, one passphrase at boot. LUKS2 on the root,
same layout as butterknife. Timeshift snapshots and GRUB rollback work the same either way.
Heads-up: /boot is now its own partition on every install, so kernels live outside snapshots.
Sorry to be that guy (just a guy), but:
Codeberg has been under a DDoS attack for hours. I've been supporting, praising and recommending Codeberg for a while now, and situations like this remind me why - a small team running on community donations, fighting to keep FOSS infrastructure alive.
If you rely on Codeberg, consider donating. I will be adding to my donation tonight.
Butterbian XFCE 0.4.0 is out. The snapshot-first foundation hasn’t changed — btrfs subvolumes laid out for you, a Timeshift snapshot before every apt operation, rollback from the GRUB menu. What changed is everything you look at.
Fair warning: this release is almost entirely about the desktop. If 0.3.3 is working for you and you don’t care what it looks like, you’re not missing any plumbing.

butterknife 0.3.0 is out. The Butterbian terminal installer got a full redesign: a guided checklist with a live install plan, butter-gold theme, and zstd zram. Zero dependencies beyond Debian's python3-urwid. Erase-only, offline-capable, pick your WM at first login.

Federal bill alert.
HR 8250 is worth your attention.
It forces every OS to check your age and hand it to every app you open.
Meta spent an estimated $2B lobbying for laws like this. When a kid sneaks onto Instagram, it's your OS's fault — not Meta's.
Linux distros are already pulling out of US states. An open-source calculator is geo-blocking Colorado.
Facebook walked into Congress with a checkbook. Call your rep and oppose HR 8250.
New on JustAGuy Linux: oxwm-setup 🧈
A dwm-like X11 WM you configure in ONE Lua file with instant hot-reload — edit config.lua, hit Mod+Shift+R, done. No recompile, no logging out.
Built by @tony-btw in zig. I just spread the house butter on top: dwm-style keybinds, a clean bar, and a 6-theme switcher.
Ships as a .deb via butterrepo, so install is just `apt install oxwm`.
New ISOs out — Butterbian XFCE 0.3.0 and butterknife 0.2.0, both built on Debian 13.5.
What's new:
- Snapshot stack tidied up: Timeshift handles retention, unused @snapshots subvolume gone
- Firefox hardened out of the box on XFCE (strict tracking protection, HTTPS-Only, uBlock Origin bundled)
BTRFS + Timeshift + grub-btrfs as always — roll back from GRUB if an update breaks something.
New Butterbian ISOs are up 🧈 — XFCE 0.3.2 and butterknife 0.2.7.
Debian 13, BTRFS + Timeshift + grub-btrfs, configured from day one.
What's new:
• XFCE now installs on legacy BIOS, not just UEFI
• GRUB snapshot menu refreshes after every apt change, not just kernel updates

Someone in chat asked if I was going to add COSMIC to butterknife.
It's not in stable — stable never gets new packages after release. So the sensible answer would have been "no."
My time is far too precious to devote to more scripting 😉. Plus, I need to sleep occasionally.
But no, I'm an idiot and my time is just not that valuable. So I created the metapackage and built a community APT repo for COSMIC on trixie.

Not in butterknife yet.
Butterrepo updated today with new .deb packages for Debian trixie:
- Zen Browser 1.19.2b
- Ghostty 1.3.0
- Helium Browser 0.10.2.1

I have left Codeberg's hosting — not Codeberg. I'm staying a contributing
member, and no, this isn't about the recent vote.
Honest reason: reliability. Slowdowns and outages are too common, and
your apt updates — and every ISO I ship — depend on my URLs answering.
Everything now runs on Butterforge, my self-hosted forge:

Nothing breaks: every Codeberg repo is an auto-synced mirror.
Switching apt is one line, whenever or never:

I’ve never really done community building before.
I’ve mostly just hung around Matt’s The Linux Cast Discord.
But I decided to build something of my own.

butterknife 0.1.6 out today. Fixes a real bug: the installer was placing
system dirs (/, /etc, /usr) with the wrong ownership on the target — user
instead of root. Breaks nix-daemon and similar permission checks.
New installs from the 0.1.6 ISO are clean. Existing users have a short
recovery script in the release notes.

Thanks to @Ddubs for finding it.

New poll on YT! Re: A logo for Butterbian. LOL. Hilarious to me. @JustAGuyLinux@www.youtube.com
Just a quick heads up in the Debian Community, Debian 13: 13.4 release is tomorrow. Not sure why I am enthusiastically posting about bug fixes and security updates, but I appreciate the effort that goes into the project.
RE: @codebergstatus@social.anoxinon.de
Wow! This is unfortunate. This DDOS attack and a community run service means you have to be patient.
I was maintaining separate repos for Helium and Zen browsers. When Neovim v0.11.6 came out today,
I almost created a third one before realizing: why not just consolidate everything into one repo?
butterrepo now handles updates for all three, with room to add more as needed.

Matt and I chatting about something random. Forgot to look at my notes from last week. This bodes well.
Seriously though, congrats on accidentally creating content while complaining about not creating content.
The installer that I typically do every new Debian release is now released. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_zC4S7TA1GI
