@zzt@mas.to I mean I won't let the LLMs take away my love for emojis but yeah the "made with heart emoji" is such slimy corporate shit. Similar vibe to rainbow capitalism in a way. (Also, isn't it funny how rainbow capitalism kinda just stopped the second it become socially acceptable again to be openly fascist)

@AdrianVolt@digitalcourage.social @BrentToderian@mastodon.online The bus having its own lane means its not stuck in traffic (jams) with private cars, means more frequent service is possible, means less overcrowded buses. Even outside of jams dedicated lanes always allow more reliable service and shorter commute routes. There's a hundred very direct correlations between dedicated bus lanes and bus passenger comfort.

@gryphonmyers @prietschka @zachleat I hate it so much that it's apparently illegal now to use structured form when writing. When I go through years old technical documentation of mine it's almost surprising to me how much I used lists, approximated em-dashes (double minus: --), emphasis, etc. Now I actively make my texts be more of a formless sludge, as otherwise it looks AI generated to people :,(

@MisterWanko@mastodon.social Btw you can get an "older" used Pixel in pristine condition on e.g. eBay for quite cheap nowadays. That's what I did to get on GrapheneOS. A budget of ~250-300€ is plenty. Best to try to get something from gen 8 onwards, since the older ones don't have many crucial hardware security features.

@n2o@23.social @CoMaps@floss.social The thing I love most about CoMaps is that it's offline-only, honestly. The performance difference between it and every other map app on my phone is massive. While CoMaps always renders everything in buttery smooth 120Hz and zero buffering, others choke and buffer and slow down to a crawl for each new tile. If they ever do an online-mode, I hope it'll be an opt-in setting and that they don't de-prioritize their amazing and unique offline perf.

@Mr0@privacysafe.social @jdw@mathstodon.xyz Framework's stuff is modular, but they're unfortunately not ethical. They proudly support and often promote the work of far-right extremists like DHH. When concerns were raised by queer people to them, the CEO shrugged them off, talking about wanting a "big tent". What that has to do with *actively* promoting Nazis (and continuing to do so), though, I don't know. Also, their stuff isn't compatible with open source firmware such as coreboot.

@jgilbert @nixCraft Can't believe you're the only one in the replies saying this. It's access to information that saves queer (and especially trans) people's lives. If I had access to the modern web when I was younger, I would've realized much sooner why I felt the way I did, and would've had a chance at a fulfilling life. But hey, why be an intelligent parent that makes their kid feel safe enough to talk to you about everything, thus shielding them from a lot of society's ills online and offline... if you can instead be a toxic surveillance helicopter parent, not leaving your kid any room for own self exploration. Queerness and independent thought need to be stomped out, after all.

@yoasif@mastodon.social @jan_leila@mspsocial.net @jellyfin@mastodon.online There's also a million other issues on top of the copyright issues too, obviously. Some interesting articles I saw just recently:

"Across a variety of tasks, including mathematical reasoning and reading comprehension, we find that although AI assistance improves performance in the short-term, people perform significantly worse without AI and are more likely to give up. Notably, these effects emerge after only brief interactions with AI. These findings are particularly concerning because persistence is foundational to skill acquisition and is one of the strongest predictors of long-term learning"

"We find that even when LLMs are prompted with expert feedback and asked to only make grammar edits, they still change the text in a way that significantly alters its semantic meaning"

AI Assistance Reduces Persistence and Hurts Independent Performance

People often optimize for long-term goals in collaboration: A mentor or companion doesn't just answer questions, but also scaffolds learning, tracks progress, and prioritizes the other person's growth over immediate results. In contrast, current AI systems are fundamentally short-sighted collaborators - optimized for providing instant and complete responses, without ever saying no (unless for safety reasons). What are the consequences of this dynamic? Here, through a series of randomized control

@jdw I've recently been on a mission to switch to using as much open source software as possible, and found that most computer's UEFI firmware is actually a closed source insecure mess. There is an awesome FOSS alternative called coreboot, but not many support it. The two companies with the most notebooks shipping with coreboot out of the box are Star Labs and System76, between which System76 looks nicer imo. They have a table here documenting which of their products use coreboot here: https://system76.com/support/articles/open-firmware-systems/ So that's the company I'd go with if I were buying a notebook today.

If I understand correctly (and please do correct me if I am wrong), it seems like Framework has started sponsoring Hyprland: So I presume this is fact: Framework, as a company, has decided to sponsor a Wayland compositor who is well known to be led as a rather “toxic and hateful community”. I know the decision was most likely entirely business motivated for them with little regards for anything else, but again, so was IBM's decision to sell and service computers for the NSDAP in the 40s. Not saying the severity is the same, but the reasoning behind and spirit of are. Especially given that there *are* companies who try to be ethical including on the topic of human rights and not supporting and normalizing fascism. For the record, tho, Framework was also my preferred brand and I really wanted to get a Framework 16, until I learned of all this. It took many people by surprise.
