@jonny@neuromatch.social Oh my god. Realdoll is still a thing? That's bad enough, much less the crypto-grifters got in. It seems quite the fashion to promote the robotism. Almost as much of a travesty as the book "Teaching and Learning in the Age of Generative AI: Evidence-Based Approaches to Pedagogy, Ethics, and Beyond" [sic], which screams propaganda even before the first occurrence of "growth mindset" in the text itself.

@autonomousapps@mstdn.social @jonny@neuromatch.social I once saved a statistics workshop at my alma mater by sussing out a recent MacOS X upgrade had changed collation rules which affected RStudio but not plain old R. I prefer the terminology of civilians to newbies. Often I'm deep down in the systems stack so I rarely deal with these issues directly. I fear I failed a friend today though, she resorted to asking an LLM for essentially what was learning to create a spreadsheet.. Maslow's Law of the Instrument played a role.

WOOHOO! My BeagleBone Black is able to hardware timestamp packets again! Something changed in the latest Debian 13 drop for it, though it's limited to transmit for all or receive for IEEE 1588, though, nothing inbetween. That's epic though, I can start driving my Mellanox cards for metrology. I'll unpack the old GPSDO and give it a whirl once cabling arrives. I only found out because I needed to repurpose something for conserver, mend and make do with what's on hand.

LLMs can't reason about socio-economic issues, and arguably they are not trained to, other than to generate in line with alignment training. The definition of "Open" used by a hyperscaler may be very different from the use of that word by a small company. People should be concerned about two large technology companies controlling tools & platforms for certain telecommunications aspects between them now. LLMs just served to obfuscate this when queried, just regurgitating marketing feelgoodisms.

Sometimes luck is just... information you didn't have (or were unable to acknowledge) at some point in time finally reaching you. I made a mistake trying to take an old acquaintance into my confidence. In the process that person revealed their true colours to me. At the time of my life's business with this person (not a romantic partner, so not that far in) I was engaging in suspension of disbelief because of situation. Now the chickens came home to roost. #shitcanned

I queried if VPN X was supported over protocol Y. Response: "1. X's design focuses on simplicity and security, and it does not explicitly handle or preserve all IPv6 extension headers. 2. The Linux kernel’s X implementation may not forward Y packets correctly through the tunnel. 3. Some distributions or configurations may require patches or custom builds to allow such traffic."

Now it looks like a land mine because the source provenance of the content can't be verified, almost by design, almost by wilful ignorance. (Consider who died.) I have to hold Hanlon's Razor over that, but the safest option is to just not use it now for anything one intends to release, IMO.

I swear to god I am never buying a Logitech keyboard ever again in my life. Yeah I got suckered by the MK270 combo. In all this excitement, as Clint Eastwood once said as Dirty Harry, I had kind of lost track myself; so it was with the receipt. Replaced with the dogshit Dell KB212 for now I got with an abortive PC bundle. But that's another story. Acclimating to the feel already. Too soft! I do hope my Dell AT101 with ALPS Sliders is still in storage... Don't get me started on the mousewheel.

Kate Crawford called it like she saw it just *7* pages into Atlas of AI, and there's a bunch of referents from HCI research over ~20 years or so warning about the anthropomorphization aspect. For my part I've directly witnessed biased output from LLMs that were presenting contentious material about particular vectors of technological development which were politicised by their very nature, in the run up to framing my own greenfield work.

For TRIM/UNMAP, to efficiently free blocks back to the flash controller from the operating system for re-use to assist wear-levelling to prolong NAND flash longevity. Probed and found the capability on both but not tested or exercised yet. The baseline is LBPWS for UNMAP in the SCSI emulation which both support, although Linux's pure-ATA instrumentation command hdparm does not report it.

SMART capability lets us monitor underlying device health. It worked for both devices, but the available monitors were different. CF-SD bridge has Media_Wearout_Indicator, Cactus tracks Soft_ECC_Correction. The CF-SD bridge needs "smartctl -T permissive" as it's not recognised. So there is no one size fits all smartd config.

The keystores should be removable so parent intermediary CA keys can get locked in a physical safe. I know someone was like "Just use a [new] NitroKey" but, cost, lead time, and supply chain diversity are factors; That said, the SLC flash vendors were all from Taiwan. I tried a Cactus industrial CompactFlash card and a microSD card in a COTS CF-SD adapter, both in a CF PC rear backplate mounted receptable, behind a SATA-PATA bridge, re-using plentiful SATA ports on a modern PC motherboard.

What we have going on now might be the other way around: "When Louise asks what the aliens want, they answer: "offer weapon". A similar translation "use weapon" is made by one of the other sites in China. ... However, Louise thinks that the symbol interpreted as "weapon" might have an alternative translation, such as "tool" or "technology". China's translation likely results from interacting with the Heptapods using Mahjong, a highly competitive game."

When I owned a paperback copy of "If You Liked School, You'll Love Work", it was indeed the riding crop and jodphurs edition. Not that I'm into that sort of thing. One particular story from Welsh's anthology was eerily relevant to me. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Liked-School-Youll-Love-Work/dp/0099483599
(Well, only a little bit, and maybe either way, but only a little bit, and it depends who it is, and it depends who's asking, and if Amy Adams is asking, it's different, but she's well merrit IIRC)
