The presentation is quite accessible given just a modest interest in science, and also grants some insight into academic live in the late 60s. Ende Mai 2026.

Ich sitze (immerhin! - das tun nicht alle hier) in einem überfüllten Regionalzug. Augenscheinlich haben die Länder Berlin und Brandenburg mal wieder nicht genug Transportkapazität bestellt.

An verschiedenen Wänden hier ein QR Code, der zu einer Befragung einlädt: Als wie voll empfinde ich den Zug?

@baz@mastodon.scot @MicroSFF@mastodon.art I learned the hard way: If a local team sport club (soccer, in my case) with a loyal following rises into a higher competition level, the sticker and sprayer defacement of an entire environment rises drastically. The whole thing vividly reminds me of animals claiming and marking their territory with urine or feces. In that and other respects, I'd wish the overall behavior of those team sports lovers were a bit more civilized.

Gestern der große FUNK.TAG des #DARC! Ich habe aktiv (als Vortragender) teilgenommen - und fuhr enttäuscht wieder nach Hause.

Er hätte eigentlich ein Festtag der Amateurfunk-Weiterbildung werden sollen. Wurde es schon auch irgendwie. Aber mich nervte Mehreres: Suboptimale Termine im Vortragsprogramm, suboptimale Räume, suboptimale Technik. Ich persönlich hab besonders Pech gehabt und besonders darunter gelitten. Details:

Friedrichshafen Faire in its wisdom has decided that it is not necessary to order busses to ferry people to the train station. The busses went Friday and Saturday, but the service will not be available on Sunday. The service was available on #HamRadioFriedrichshafen Sunday all these previous years, but not this year. 🤦 There are municipal busses going to Friedrichshafen Hafen: One bus every two hours. I imaging it will be cosy in those busses tomorrow. #AfuBarcamp says "thank you" 🤨 !

Went to the London "British Museum of Science". Again, as I have been impressed when visiting ~50 years ago.

Today, it is more about people, less about science.

They tell you the "James Watt as a child with a tea kettle" legend is probably not historic, but I saw no comparison chart of steam engine efficiency, say, of different ages or with different steam temps.

Which of the computers on display were analog, which digital? Your guess.

Still fun. But from a nerd POV, less than it used to be.

Lots of people are invited to play with #meshcore right now. (For a German online talk, see 🧵.) After some time, many will put their thing into a drawer and move on to other toys. I'm afraid: When power loss hits, everybody in the affected region will pull those out of their drawers and reactivate, all at once. A massive DDOS from well-meaning people will result. Also, a wild mixture of obsolete firmwares will then add a measure of Babylonian confusion to the chaos. @darc @grutzifix @meshcore

In the meantime, I do like you do: Own a bicycle. Besides what you wrote, I also want my vehicle to not get into the way of sustainability. Have not yet seen a car that does that, i.e., can be driven by every adult on earth without totally depleting earth's resources. I'm using Deutsche #Bahn on a budget. I have a Bahncard 25, almost never reserve a seat, book Super Sparpreises weeks in advance. The "show our best prices" often leads to somewhat inconvenient late or early travel times. Trick: In spite of my Deutschlandticket, I also book the first mile. Apparently constructions are planned fairly short-term, and there's always one in my home town Berlin. So over half of the time, "Zugbindung aufgehoben" results and I travel at a pleasant time. @Larvitz@burningboard.net

Even that suitability I'm not sure of. People play around for a while. Eventually, stuff gets put in a drawer. Time of chaos strikes, people all over town pull out stuff from their drawers. Half won't work, but the other half will and result in the moral equivalent of a DDOS attack on the net. Curious question: When a PR comes in, how would you know its author abided by your policy? Personally, as a retired dev, I have not touched AI and can afford to continue to not touch it. But I do have a few low-traffic FLOSS projects out there (which see a PR once a year or even less often). So that's the background to my question. @blinry @teamtype

Some #hamRadio software has a special mode specifically to measure sound card sample rate via time signal second ticks. I think it was fldigi. I simply let the sound card run for an hour or so and record timestamps each time a new batch of samples comes in. The only outside help that needs is NTP time. @dg3hda @Quantensalat

I think running CAT as a network service a good idea. It allows auxiliary programs (such as logging) to access the rig's state while another (main) program changes it. Fldigi offers flrig to do that, Hamlib offers rigctld. Flrig has a GUI, rigctld is "purer". You can use flrig's network offerings from Hamlib-based programs. But some users of Hamlib-based JS8Call had weird problems when doing that. If you can live without the GUI, I recommend rigctld, which fldigi also talks to happily.

The ionosphere's height is changing quite a bit during the course of a day. E.g., after sunset, I understand the ionosphere becomes cooler and hence somewhat collapses downwards, which increases ion concentration. So the MUF descent after sunset is sometimes arrested for an hour or so. Check the MUF 3000 graphs of https://www.ionosonde.iap-kborn.de/actuellz.htm#muf Such movement should generate Doppler effects. Whether other mechanisms might also introduce frequency shifts, I don't know. @Quantensalat

#Lora devices for #MeshCore and #MeshTastic typically suffer from weak front-ends that show unwanted mixing: Nearby strong signals are mixed right to the intended signal frequency, causing noise to skyrocket. Research IP3. So you're seeing high noise when hooking up your device to a decent antenna? It is not the antenna's fault. 🧵 Filtering helps: It prevents your weak front-end from seeing many nearby signals. Strong front-ends are expensive and tend to consume more battery power. @lasse

Somehow, today's #JS8 party had something of a "bad hair day" for me. You had to leave one QSO early, @G8RKE , I another, later one. Someone got distracted so I had to wait for some 20 minutes in the middle of a QSO. On two different occasions, two people tried to chat with me simultaneously (in one of those two, it was clearly my fault: being confused and sending confusing signals). My motto for such: If all always worked smoothly, we wouldn't enjoy our successes quite as much. 🤷 Next time.

I was recently looking for a DAB+ radio that will alert me via the ASA emergency messaging feature deployed in Germany 🧵. But typical ASA-enabled rigs run on AC mains power exclusively. Power gone? ASA gone! 😯 I finally found+bought a "TechniSat DigitRadio 1 A" that is off-grid able via a rechargeable battery. It's a fine DAB+ radio, but that battery is about 15x too small for ASA, imho. A mere 12-14 hours of ASA monitoring will render it dead empty (when no messages come in). 🤦 @marsik@witter.cz

For another piece of advice, admittedly more tongue-in-cheek than practical: In yet another account, set aside the time, personal energy, and motivation you need for administration and moderation, also a three months' allowance. So should you ever run out of either the time, energy, or motivation required to keep that server of yours afloat, you can still keep it running for those important three more months, out of that store. 🤷

I was forced into swimming lessons as a schoolboy and largely hated it. Not good at it, either. Sports at school was 95% humiliation and at most 5% fun. Learned diving sort-of like you do now, by myself, in shallow water, on my own, in my own pace. For me, the issue was opening my eyes under water. Years later, voluntarely took a course to learn different ways to swim. Never learned the crawl, though, as I was suffering from a common cold when that was taught. @blinry@chaos.social

Sie, @BMDS@social.bund.de, haben gerade eine Ausschreibung laufen: Es soll sichergestellt werden, dass die EUID App nicht auf Handys lauffähig ist oder gemacht werden kann, die unter alternativen, googlefreien Android Custom ROMs laufen. A new FLOSS antenna simulation program is being planned at https://github.com/OpenResearchInstitute/Arcanum . It will calculate more precisely than the ubiquitous nec2 by treating segments as metal cylinders rather than thin wires. No working code yet, but people apparently work on test data (known antennas), design of the program in 4 passes, and interfaces between those passes. Once completed, you apparently can use Arcanum as a drop-in replacement of nec2. Cool stuff! Thanks to @abraxas3d@mastodon.radio for pointing it out! 🧵
