One perk of working for Red Hat was the ability to use a self-managed OS. However, this is coming to an end due to compliance requirements. I'm not comfortable with having my personal private keys on a managed system, so I moved my SSH key, GPG key, and electronic signature certificate to a #YubiKey. And damn, it works nicely!

@sean@scoat.es The map is clearly wrong. A typical result of prefix collisions. What I do in @meshy while building the path on the map is that in case of a collision I pick the geographically closest colliding node to the previous node in the path. It mostly works. But only using 2B or 3B prefixes fixes this completely. I'm surprised someone still uses 1B in Canada. But it happens, the official client still defaults to it.

I never would have believed that I'd ever see a reading starting with a 4 on our weather station. At least not so soon. (It later peaked at 40.3 ℃)

Today was the first time in recorded history that the highest officially recorded temperature in #Moravia exceeded 40 degrees (40.8 ℃).

@sean@scoat.es BTW why did the Canadian MC community pick 3B? I was wondering about it when saw it in the list of presets. The probability of collisions with 2B is very small and 3B eats into the payload quite a lot. I suppose that when the mesh in Canada becomes dense enough messages may accumulate a lot of nodes travelling across the country. Or a nation-wide mesh isn't realistic and the ambition is to build smaller meshes? We're a small country, we're building a nation-wide mesh, but for an area that is only 500x300km, a completely different scale. :)

@dbread@ohai.social Meshcore-open has a lot of crazy stuff such as message compression that doesn't actually compress. And this. :) You need a 800MB local LLM for this. And it doesn't work in real life because good luck transmitting several large LoRa packets and delivering them all over the mesh.

Visiting family and asked where the nearest public charging station was so I could charge my car for the trip back. My cousin said he has a solar panel system and a wallbox, and that I could charge my car at his place.
Screw Hormuz. We take care of our energy needs within the family. 😊

#MeshOS, a proprietary app developed by the guy who tried to secretly register the #MeshCore trademark, was hacked. The welcome banner on the keygen page is adorable.

The biggest hassle with the electric car was that when we visited my mom in #Luhačovice, we had nowhere to charge it. There wasn’t a single DC charger within a 15-kilometer radius. That’s changing now. EON Drive has opened four 50-kW charging points 300 meters from my mom’s apartment. \o/ We’ve had our electric car for a year, and in that time, the charging infrastructure has changed dramatically in #Czechia.

@solar_chase@mastodon.green I remember a presentation by @jachym@mastodon.social of @maptiler.bsky.social. They have several versions of the maps based on "world view" of a particular region or country. You wouldn't be able to do business with global maps with just one variant. You would get into trouble very quickly.

Are web analytics dead? Yesterday I published a blog post that received 1,000 views within several hours. While it would be great to think that my blog posts are that popular, in fact 80–90% of the views are from bots. Independent Analytics uses Matomo's device-detector to filter out bots, but it seems that it can no longer keep up with #AI bots. For some time, I've evaluated the success of articles based on the real human interaction they were able to spark, I suppose this is all we have left now.

Today I added companion telemetry support into #Meshy. When you pull in the location, the official #MeshCore client shows it on the map. In Meshy it also shows your location, so that you can see how far you're from the other companion.

I'm experimenting with a new layout of #Meshy. The main menu is now vertical in the very left panel which hides when the window gets narrower (can be always evoked). It should still work well on phones. Of course, there are a lot of paper cuts to solve, some elements look out of place or redundant now, but I already like it better than the current layout.

@leberschnitzel@existiert.ch @stereo@freiburg.social it really depends what you want from it. MT is great for ad hoc networks, but it doesn't really scale. The hop limit is 7 while MC's hop limit is 64. I can text with friends hundreds of km away on MC, not completely reliably, but it mostly works. Good luck trying that with MT. But as I said MT is great for ad hoc networks, local telemetry networks etc. For those who want to build a human-to-human messaging alternative to the Internet, Meshcore is the way to go.

@stefan @jwildeboer I think technology is the least of their problem. Making the Atmosphere truly decentralized will require a major shift in power dynamics. I don't think you can build it around one dominant provider unless that provider purposely gives their position up. Is Bluesky going to do it with all the VC funding behind them? I don't think so. Not impossible, but also not very likely IMO. We'll be hearing about a lot of new ATProto services, how the ecosystem is flourishing etc, but then Bluesky will go down and so will most of the network because at the end of the day it will still be an ecosystem around one dominant provider.

@LeoBistmans I think both can do the same since they use the same library. Just python3-pyzbar doesn't have to be compiled. I think I can make it optional in the build. The feature which needs it isn't very useful. It scans QR codes with contact info, but many webcams have difficulties to actually provide good enough picture for the library to read the code. And on the desktop you can copy paste the contact info anyway.

@pocketvj thanks, great to see Meshy being used in the wild. I'm curious how you find battery SoC reporting. For LiPo all other clients have a linear function from 4.2V to 3.0V. It isn't very accurate. Many users report companion die at 30-40% of the battery SoC because they typically die between 3.4 and 3.5V. I've tweaked it to have two breaking points: 4.0V/90%, 3.6V/10%. It should show below 10% SoC when the companion is about to die. But I don't have many samples to try it on.

@jorgeluis @stereo Hi, it is here: https://codeberg.org/sesivany/meshy It is still not at full feature parity with the official client, but it's fairly close. Now I'm focusing on optimizations. Yesterday I found out that the app occupies 300-400 MB of memory. I was able to get it down to 130 MB (not yet pushed to Codeberg). But then you open the emoji picker and it jumps to 650 MB on my HiDPI display because the GTK widget loads all emojis in hires... Now I understand why some apps don't include emoji pickers at all. :)
