My all-time favourite ghost sign, alas now scrubbed off::
They come as a boon and a blessing to men: the Pickwick, the Owl and the Waverley pen.

So you can hear them, here’s a short clip of hundreds of greylag geese flying over our heads. (My client doesn’t seem to let me add alt text to videos, so: hundreds of geese flying overhead, visible only as small silhouettes but making a great deal of noise; above them is a lot of grey cloud and not much daylight. At the end you get a glimpse of an old stone harbour nearby - it’s Fisherrow Harbour by Musselburgh on the Firth of Forth in eastern Scotland.) #scotland #birds

A family of coots. It looks like they’ve been very successful this season - five youngsters!

This afternoon we went to the beach (at Musselburgh in Scotland) where the tide was waaaaay out, the sun shone, and the beach and harbour seemed to be steaming with evaporating water.

One of the joys of Edinburgh for me is the public transport - you may laugh, as we have no metro, very few city trains and currently only half a tram line - but the buses are (1) frequent and well organised, (2) publicly owned, and (3) free! (If you’re lucky to be the right age). But what really impressed me recently was these stairs on a double decker bus. Normally the bus stairs are a dark dingy hole between decks, but these are so bright and cheery! Kudos to the designer. #3goodthings #bus

Lovely walk this morning under a perfect cloudless clear blue sky, and glorious sunshine which wasn’t too hot. Perfect. I spent much of the time admiring the blossom on the trees.

Spotted on my morning walk, an MG Magnette, a perfect-looking survivor from the 1950s.

A lovely visit to the park. It’s chicks season! Pictures: Canada geese and tiny Canada goslings; Coot and cootlings; a larger cootling; four grey herons doing a stately dance (*).

(* Not really; a lady was throwing food to the herons, who seemed to be warily circling each other while waiting for titbits to come their way)

@CiaraNi@mastodon.green When a friend went for a (formal, planned) job interview, he had to wait a while before the interviewers would be ready for him, and he was shown to the office kitchen. He got chatting to various people as they got their cups of tea or coffee; they seemed like great people and he really opened out and chatted happily back to them. When the interview itself came, it was more or less just “you’ve got the job”.

We had a lovely walk in the park this afternoon (*) where we saw this grey heron, standing in the perfect spot to be framed by the tangle of wood in the pond.

(*) Why yes, we *do* have nothing better to do all day now than enjoy ourselves! It’s great. I recommend it.

Really peaceful by the river yesterday evening. Lots of swans (not pictured) - they seem to come in off the sea when the tide is high. Sunny, but chilly, a north wind. But sunny.

I kind of knew I was going to have to extricate myself from the Apple ecosystem some day, but until now I couldn’t face the effort it’d take. Looks like it’s time to roll my sleeves up and get started.

Wild garlic growing by the Roseburn Path, one of Edinburgh’s loveliest green spaces. I don’t know anything quite as green as wild garlic in the spring.

A brilliant petition for UK folks to sign: “Launch a public inquiry into the impact of Section 28 on LGBTQ people”

Petition: Launch a public inquiry into the impact of Section 28 on LGBTQ people
Petitions - UK Parliament and UK Government

Petition: Launch a public inquiry into the impact of Section 28 on LGBTQ people

We call on the Government to launch a public inquiry into the impact of Section 28 of the Local Government Act (1988) which specified that Local Authorities could not intentionally promote, through material or teaching, homosexuality or same-sex relationships as a 'pretended family relationship’

@0xabad1dea@infosec.exchange Here in Scotland I once saw a wild pheasant mother leading a group of tiny fluffy chicks along a path. When accidentally disturbed, the tiny fluffballs took cover while the mother astonished me - she rushed a few yards down the path then started making loud pheasant noises while limping pathetically in a circle and flapping her wings - “eat me! I’m vulnerable! They are not the chicks you’re looking for!”
