@pluralistic@mamot.fr I anticipate thousands of "clean room" versions of open source software that will be unmaintained from the moment they are created. Short term gain for the people doing this will become long term technical debt paid for by the people using it. This is actually a strong incentive for those of us who actually understand the consequences to rally behind real projects with real security updates.

@pluralistic@mamot.fr I encountered one a couple of weeks ago on what purported to be a cyber security news site. It popped up to get me to agree to whatever tracking cookies it wanted to serve up to me. It felt like a particularly ironic piece of performance art, where the intended experience included the audience walking out.

No, it isn't #Caturday here or anywhere on the planet. Nonetheless I find myself subject to the whims of a cat. I got comfortable on my futon. She got comfortable on my legs. I guess I'll be sleeping here for the rest of the night.

@mattblaze@federate.social Also, it's impossible to have 5 9s reliability if user behavior is required for the measurement. In 1990, you could determine that the long distance switches were down because when Grandma tried to call Aunt Edna, she got a fast busy rather than a wrong number. Today, Grandma spent 20 minutes wondering why no one picked up when she texted.

@cstross@wandering.shop I think you underestimate the opportunities for improvement. It should drift, possibly by a random amount that differs for each user, so as to require periodic resetting. This would obviously be accomplished by the rotation of a knob that moves the hands. Since the mode for using that knob disengages the drive mechanism from the hands, it should directly move them in a strictly mechanical and purely circular fashion.

@0xabad1dea I hadn't heard about it before, but assuming it was an April Fool's Day RFC, I just searched for the ones that were published on Apr 1, 2026 and it wasn't there. A little more searching found it, and it seems to have been intended as one, but was still in a draft state. The delay in the joke feels like meta-humor and works well considering the context of IPv4 address space exhaustion and the slow implementation of IPv6.

@VeeRat@zeroes.ca Ah, yes. Use AI to produce the artifact that is itself simultaneously the most visible and measurable result and the least correlated with the actual value being produced. Management by metrics being reduced to its worst. This is one of the likely consequences of students learning to use AI to produce the appearance of learning without the substance. They will learn to measure and value the artifacts rather than the value and bring that into how they measure the value that AI produces. AI is trained to produce what its trainers value as well. I see a downward spiral.

La Erdős-a kaj Bacon-a Nombroj ankaŭ transiras la jarojn.

So, I finally made my first coffee of the day at nearly 11:00. That's both a good thing and a bad thing. It's good because it means that I was actually in a flow state this morning getting something done. That's far too infrequent. It's a bad thing because slowly sipping coffee is a very good way to make myself sit and think about what I'm doing.

#Esperanto

I'm going to share a gentle reminder because I had a big scare yesterday. It's about backups. I'll rewind a bit. I currently make backups to external USB hard drives. It's not a perfect plan because it's slow, but other than that, it should be a good plan. However, my backup plan has two flaws. First, it isn't automatic. I have backups from whenever I chose to make them. Second, I hadn't made any recently because I had been meaning to diagnose what caused them to fail. And third of two, I'd done a huge amount of work in the past month that wasn't backed up. My plan was to start backing up to my new NAS as soon as I got it running. Unfortunately, the drives I got for it were incompatible with the enclosure. Honestly, what manufacturer thinks it's a good idea to have two models of drives, one SAS and one SATA whose model numbers differ by 1 digit and that digit is a 2 for one model and a 3 for the other. And my hand writing wasn't completely clear. I have the replacements on order. But the fact that I hadn't made backups last month is on me, not them. So, I had an issue with my laptop. It's almost certainly a minor hardware failure with the drive. It hung. This isn't my first rodeo. I know how to use the Linux magic SysRq REISUB sequence. And on reboot ... it didn't. Secure boot didn't like the kernel. The words "kernel panic" can mean two thing. The first is the official version. The second is what I did when this happened. Eventually my heartrate returned to low triple digits per minute and I booted from the previous kernel version. Overnight, I made the backup I should have had already. Now I'm making a second one on a separate drive. So, now the gentle reminder. 1) Make backups 2) Make them regularly 3) Test that you can restore from them 4) Have copies on multiple separate media I know better than to make the mistakes I did. I got lucky.

@spaf That sadly didn't work for me. In Feb of 2020, we were still being assured that the pandemic had only reached a few locations on the west Coast and hadn't arrived in the Eastern US. My wife and I had been isolating for months to avoid bringing viruses to a family member with cancer. Our first real public event since spring of 2019 was a Blue Öyster Cult concert on Feb 22, 2020. Four days later, the symptoms arrived. I caught COVID-19 while singing along to Don't Fear the Reaper at a BÖC concert. The cancer patient, my wife and I are doing fine. I think the band members are all healthy as well.

@cstross The hidden twist is what the timing of that signal and several others indicates about their origin and what they've detected and are responding to. A final three signals indicate they're getting rapidly closer and are aware of much more recent world events. The tension builds as the protagonists attempt to determine the aliens' true intentions. The story ends as the linguist on the team finally determines that the term that's eluded the team the whole time translates as "quarantine".

@unrtst@noc.social @pluralistic@mamot.fr I'm aware of a number of incidents where open source libraries were used by contractors without the knowledge of the company that would ultimately sell the product. They were used to save time or money, which is a completely legitimate reason to use a good library. Hiding that information from the client meant that the client wasn't aware that any vulnerabilities published regarding those libraries were risks to their product as well, because they didn't know it had been used. The cases I know about are obviously ones that were discovered. The attitudes about using open source libraries in commercial products are complicated, but they've shifted over time. It's accepted now that there are ways to use open source in full compliance with both the stated terms and the intent of the licenses. Any tool that is designed to circumvent the need to comply with those licenses creates any incentive to hide the connection entirely. The copyright holders of the open source code aren't going to want the license they chose to be cast aside while someone can still effectively use their work. And companies that want to remain in real compliance with licensing terms aren't going to want it either. Yet it creates a perverse incentive for middlemen, whether contractors or people wanting to create forked projects without the burden to them of the original license. Those 3rd parties have a perverse incentive to hide the connection from the rest of the world. Another risk of forked projects is that it dilutes the pool of developers to support them. When some of the forks are closed source, the developers supporting them will be limited to those paid to support them. Those forks are more likely to become unsupported orphan projects.

@imacrea@mamot.fr In many ways, the Fediverse reminds me about some of the things I loved about Usenet, but that I didn't realize until years after I'd lost them. I won't say that there's no one here posting performatively, mostly because I know I've done it too. But it has never dominated here the way it has elsewhere. Usenet lacked the ability to follow people, so you had to simply watch for them to say something. Between that and the slower propagation of posts, it rewarded us for saying something interesting and finding people with something interesting to say. It was accidental or coincidental. It took the rise of social media to show me, slowly, that much of what made it great was what it didn't do. And Usenet was federated. It took the Fediverse to show me that that was a feature. It wasn't automatically identifiable by a set of tropes of how social media and engagement worked. It was neither a hero nor an antihero because we didn't yet have a social media shorthand for those. Yet there were people filling the role of good-hearted sidekicks, talking about netiquette, and being the touchstones of what they wanted in the world around them. It's tempting to say the Fediverse is an antihero in this analogy. But it isn't. It isn't the deliberate addition of flaws to throw the good within it into sharper relief. It isn't even the underdog in the sense of tropes. Part of what it eschews are the mechanisms that support the tropes. Perhaps the best analogy is that where the rest of social media arrives to be a blockbuster franchise, the Fediverse is a thousand indie bookstores. There are treasures in each, waiting to be found and discussed, person to person.

RE: @eff@mastodon.social

Most consumers don't want to have to think about the security of the thing they use. Honestly, I can't say that I blame them for that. I don't want to have to think about it either. I do think about my router's security because I know it matters, I need a home network that's a bit more complex that just telling my friends what the WiFi password is.

When was the last time you saw a network-enabled device like a smart TV that included a disclosure about the need to install security updates? I've never seen one. Manufacturers know that if they make such disclosures, they will discourage a portion of their potential customer base. And I can't help but wonder whether they open themselves up to potential lawsuits if that disclosure is treated as an implied warranty as well. Making it possible to install security patches while not drawing attention to it gives them the legal protection of shifting the blame to customers who didn't install them.

My son, a grad student, is struggling with the anti-cheating software he has to run in order to take tests online. He contacted their tech support who told him he needed to uninstall McAfee. He has a relatively new laptop running the pre-installed copy of Windows 11 and Windows Defender, not McAfee. If a piece of software is incompatible with that configuration and their tech support misdiagnoses the problem that way, I'm willing to say that it doesn't work on Windows and their tech support is completely incompetent.
