It's frustrating to see individualist "solutions" like freezing fuel prices gaining popularity on the left (looking at you @avilewis@mstdn.ca and @thegreenparty@threads.net).

This crisis is an opportunity to push for #renewables, mass transport, cycling infrastructure, and subsidised insulation programmes, not perpetuating the failed pattern of cheap fossil fuels. #cdnpoli #ukpol

@mistersql@mastodon.social It's billed as a cat replacement with things like syntax highlighting and line numbers, but integrates with your pager (less usually) when paging is needed. So it doesn't replace less, but I find it's pretty handy.

Hey there fellow nerds, ready for a niche blog post about something that I think is important and seemingly no one else cares about? I got you covered:

Yeah yeah, everyone thinks that their way is the Best Way™, but I'm going to try to make the case for some very simple standards …

Just when it sounds like the BC government has managed to do something right, I'm reminded of just how unbelievably stupid its politics are.

Don't like B.C.'s new Pacific time zone? Local governments still have the power to set their own clocks | CBC News

As B.C.'s provincial government does away with biannual time changes, the East Kootenay region will continue to spring forward and fall back with Alberta. And, the province says, other local governments can choose to set their own time zones, if they want to.

@hugovk@mastodon.social not off the top of my head I'm afraid. I use GitLab pretty heavily and *love* their CI system which I feel is far superior (and more approachable) than GitHub Actions. Codeberg & Forgejo don't have a CI system built-in, but support integration with WoodpeckerCI which is similar to GitLab. Migrating to either from GitHub is pretty painless though, with automated tools for the job. Self-hosted GitLab is trickier, but I've worked at a few companies that have managed with limited staff.

Replying to
@hugovk@mastodon.social it all depends on the project size. For small, personal things, Codeberg seems to be the consensus. Cloud-based GitLab is also great, though they're also for-profit and American. For a big group like the PSF though, I suggest following the GNOME foundation's lead and self-host a GitLab or Forgejo instance (or pair up with another FLOSS project that already does this).

@mullvadnet@mastodon.online the primary video appears to be corrupted. At about 5s in, it breaks down. It's also giganimous for the web and in a proprietary format that's not very friendly. This should help:

@nixCraft@mastodon.social I really don't get this joke. Arch isn't Gentoo. You install it, and it just works. You never need to do a system upgrade 'cause it's on a rolling release, and its packages are always modern with the features you want. Meanwhile Debian is perpetually antiquated, forcing creative hacks to get recent versions, and requires a tricky system upgrade every year or so just to remain relevant.

@nick@bath.social for my money, pouring your energy into setting up a makerspace is the best use of your time. You build community around a (hopefully physical) space and let that community teach itself. Otherwise, you end up operating as a hub in a hub/spoke model, placing a lot of load on you personally.

@randahl@mastodon.social this is dangerous rhetoric from someone who doesn't appear to understand the implications. Banning young people from social media isolates them from those that might support them while handing your citizen's biometric data to foreign 3rd-parties for "verification" only creates a target for surveillance and identity theft. I get he's coming from the right place, but he's talking like an MPAA lawyer, pear-clutching "for the children".

@mastodonmigration @fsinn it's not my intent to be defeatist. By all means, primary the hell out of those dinosaurs get a real progressive leadership in there. My point is that the Democratic party as it is enables and supports fascism, and counting on them to save the country, given their record is naïve. Americans need to do more than replace red fascists with blue seat-warmers-for-fascists, and if they're not willing to recognise that the Dems are the problem too, then the country is doomed

@pluralistic@mamot.fr I think you're missing a big point here. While it's true that reimplementation with an LLM effectively turns a codebase into public domain, it does *not* turn it into a GPL project. It's more like an MIT one at best. Theoretically one could reimplement the Linux kernel and then ship a product running "Lunix" filled with proprietary changes and the vendor wouldn't be obligated to share the code for any of it.

@hugovk@mastodon.social needing 1.5million minutes sounds like a good case for self-hosting, but I imagine GitLab would be happy to charge you for it if you wanted a managed solution. You may also find that the CI is faster, so you may not need so much. Alternatively, GitLab also allows self-hosted runners against their cloud, so you could do everything with them but save cash hosting your runners. Not sure about the architectures though. I'm sure it can be done if GitHub is doing it.

@tinker@infosec.exchange my big concern with this is that while I'm reasonably sure that I can get Linux on a ThinkPad or Framework, my experience with more "consumer" brands has been pretty poor. I tried this recently with my father-in-law's old Yoga laptop and Debian couldn't recognise ½ his RAM. I'd be worried that an event like this would go more harm than good.

@gvwilson@mastodon.social @sue@glasgow.social I've been rolling code for 24 years and have had a "do good" job only once, and that was for a non-profit. Capitalism and the profit model are the problem, not the individual's attempt to cleave capitalism from the web. Obviously, we all need to eat, but the idea that even a small portion of people -- let alone everyone could do Good and be paid for it under capitalism is fantasy.

@jensorensen@mastodon.social "Our Changing Climate" did a great bonus video on this topic just a few days ago. It's on Nebula though, so you may not be able to see it: https://nebula.tv/videos/occ-why-ecological-masculinity-isnt-enough/ Essentially the thesis is that toxic masculinity favours dominance and eschews collaboration & inclusion, so merely redirecting current forms of masculinity towards a better purpose isn't enough. We need collaboration & inclusion to fight climate change.
