@TheyOfHIShirts@glammr.us great question Alex! Well for one we live near the Pacific Ocean which is relatively cold. Thunderstorms like warm, moist air to thrive so when you have a cold mass of water near by it can tamper with the energy thunderstorms get from warm air. We also don't get a lot of rich moisture like how Oklahoma does from the Gulf of Mexico. So all that is a gist of what causes us to have less thunderstorms.

@pascaline@mastodon.nl I agree! I took that profile picture back in May when I went storm chasing for the first time with a buddy of mine. Just sampling the air!

@gekitsu@toot.cat wow that is quite the starter lol. Yeah forecasting and determining the best model out puts can be very difficult especially around the PNW. The way you break down each model and test each one for their own biases is great!

@johnrohde@norrebro.space @lisamelton@mastodon.social glad to have you here! Even though I may talk a lot more about the weather here on the west coast of North America you might find some of the terms/explanations I use to be helpful.

@NorCalWineLady@sfba.social Summer is the one season that is hard to figure out around here. If you have heard of La Niña/El Niño you know they talk about those a lot for the winter time. That is because those sea surface temperatures in the tropical Pacific tend to have more of an affect on our winters than our summers. Our Summers around here kind of have a mind of their own, but we are just coming out of El Niño which may have caused the hot Summer pattern to change compared to the last couple years.

@appassionato@mastodon.social that looks like Ventusky.com isn't it? That is showing the wind speed/direction of a low pressure system off in the northeast Pacific Ocean

@pavi@social.masto.host so the polar jet stream is the section of jet stream that containes all the cold air up in atmosphere around the polar regions. This stream is the dividing line between the cold poles and the warm equator. This causes warm and cold air to constantly clash and create varying weather conditions across the globe. We don't really know if climate change affects the jet stream, but I have heard arguments for CG causing a calmer jetstream or even a more chaotic jet stream.
