A large and well-furnished flat…but it’s a rental. How you can use it is decided by the landlord. Any modifications you want to make need to be approved by the landlord. They can increase the rent or kick you out at any time they want. Maybe the rent is low (for now), maybe the landlord is nice, but the fact remains - legally speaking, you’re at their mercy.
A flat you own. It might be small, it might not have all the same luxuries, it might cost more upfront [1]…but it’s yours. There’s no limits on what you use it for (without affecting others), there’s no limits on how you can change it (without affecting others). And nobody can evict you whenever it strikes their fancy.
This is a post about software freedom.
[1] and the very existence of landlords and leasing is squarely to blame for that

I’m not sure how good an idea it is to recommend onosm.org … IIRC it creates anonymous notes? And so many OSM contributors (myself included) just don’t trust anonymous notes, which defeats the whole purpose… 🤔

@AmenZwa@mathstodon.xyz @synlogic4242@social.vivaldi.net Why would the inability to grasp FP be an obstacle to learning Lisp? Both Common Lisp and Scheme are multi-paradigm languages, they also support OOP (among other paradigms) 🙂
Perversely, the “syntactic passions” are what have kept me from learning languages with a C-like syntax. I just like Lisp syntax (and its benefits - the consistency, the structural editing, the macros, …) that much… 😅

More seriously, I’m curious about how you came up with the idea, what informed the design decisions, and its advantages/disadvantages compared to its numerous competitors…(SXML, EDN, conspack, …)

@timberwraith Same in India. Got one in the India XMPP channel stubbornly claiming that using genLLMs is okay as long as it’s not illegal. I tried to guide him into deconstructing that, e.g. by asking if he was also okay with marital rape since that’s legal in India too…but he wasn’t capable of any discussion beyond merely parroting his stance.

@DavidBridger@mastodon.social I quite like this one, thanks! Also, according to Wikiquote, this quote is…
Widely attributed to Thucydides in books and online. In fact misquoted from Sir William Francis Butler, Charles George Gordon (1889), p. 85, where it reads: “The nation that will insist on drawing a broad line of demarcation between the fighting man and the thinking man is liable to find its fighting done by fools and its thinking done by cowards.”[3]

Interacting with the tech community at IndiaFOSS seems to leave me more depressed each time. Every participant is geeky and has some idea of what “FOSS” is, and yet is constantly promoting proprietary and centralized platforms - Instagram, LinkedIn, Discord, WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal, Matrix, ATProto…
And those who do know about the alternatives (e.g. XMPP, ActivityPub) don’t exactly feel the need to support them. Writing patches (even for pay!), making bug reports, hell, just being active participants…it’s all too much to expect.
So tired of seeing this from people who should know better. They make the world a shittier place for themselves and everyone else.

Extremely on-point post.
https://mastodon.ar.al/@aral/116946253995217476
I preface each OSM talk/workshop I give with a little introduction/discussion about software freedom - what are the four freedoms, and why they are important for every user (especially nontechnical ones).
But I recently changed it to have a slightly broader focus - the four freedoms, decentralization, and cooperative governance - with an overarching emphasis on, as Aral says, ownership and control.

You can try any of these editors to add cameras, the type of cameras, their angles, their height -
MapComplete (web app, no installation needed; native Android version available at app.MapComplete.org; use the Surveillance theme)StreetComplete (Android app; use the Things overlay)Every Door (Android/iOS app; use the Micromapping 🌲 mode)
And Panopticity is a great way to visualize their FoV and avoid them. https://panopticity.fr/

Four-panel comic.
Panel one: “It’s a common refrain these days.”
Nattering Noggins hosts: “The problem as i see it is that America has become too polarized.” “Yes, it’s so sad.”
Panel two: “But the term “polarization” can be a form of both-sidesing that obscures specifics.”
Armed extremist: I’m here to stop the transgenders from destroying the country.
Transgender person: I prefer not to die, and sometimes share this opinion!
Panel three: “When a movement becomes extremist, do we really want to see the opposition as part of the problem?”
Man: Anyone who helps a 10 year-old rape victim get an abortion should go to jail!
Woman: That’s barbaric and I’m going to do everything I can to fight it.
This panel has the warning, “Polarization Alert”.
Panel four: “Would this be better?”
Man in military gear: You will do as I say, subhuman!
Latino man: I will politely acquiesce!
Nattering Noggins host: How nice! No more polarization!

@iuvi@mastodon.social If I understand you correctly, you’re saying that OsmAnd suggests an interchange much later than is necessary…? 🤔
If so, I would first check if the data is correct. Here are some things I’d check in OsmAnd, at the interchange that you think it should be recommending -
If you tap each of the bus stops, do they show the bus routes you expect? If not, they need to be added to their respective bus route relations…
Can you try pedestrian routing from one bus stop to the other? If there’s no route found, or if it’s wrong/too long, there’s probably an issue with the pedestrian infrastructure data, which should be fixed on OSM.
If neither of those is the case, you can open an issue about this on the OsmAnd issue tracker…be sure to include links to the locations, and ideally also screenshots.

Thanks to FOSS United I’ve been doing a lot of #OSM talks and workshops, but I’m unsure if it’s having the intended effect.
Does spreading awareness about #OpenStreetMap really help if the clients aren’t as good as Google Maps? If people aren’t using it, will they really contribute?
We need polished apps that provide everything people expect from Google Maps…
Render the legal boundaries of India, so it’s actually legal to use and distribute them.
(Try explaining that to the CoMaps community and watch the thoughtless downvotes fly in - see CoMaps issue 2964)
Integrate https://closures.osm.ch/ , so that traffic information - by far the most widely-requested feature - is finally provided.
Integrate https://transitous.org/ for static and realtime public transport routes.
Integrate Panoramax and Wikimedia Commons photos.
Integrate Mangrove Reviews for ratings, reviews, and photos.
Integrate satellite imagery.
Be available in Indian languages.
Make it easy to add missing details, similar to MapComplete.
(Cartes.app seems like the best starting point.)
We also need a cooperative organization (like @prav is for XMPP) to provide a brand name and to allow users to control development.

@thesupertechie@lgbtqia.space Having a default server isn’t the issue…rather, Matrix and ATProto are protocols I consider to be (in the words of rysiek) “cosplaying decentralization”.
If it’s too expensive to self-host (and in a manner that gives you meaningful independence from the flagship instance without losing touch with the rest of the network), it’s not really decentralized.

Something I was thinking about when I attended the Trans Bill protests…
The whole point of a protest is to get the attention of those in power, possibly by disrupting their “business as usual”.
But protest in #Delhi, the center of power in #India, has been limited to the little cage of an area near Jantar Mantar. The cage is made up of police barricades and under heavy surveillance. During protests, it is surrounded by police, ostensibly to “protect” the protestors. But - and this should be apparent to anyone with half a brain cell - what it really is is a means of cramming protestors into a position where it is easiest to suppress them.
If we can’t protest in front of government officials - and yes, that includes the fucking Parliament - then we don’t have a right to protest.
If protests can only take place in a little chicken cage, conveniently distanced from the politician’s eyes and ears, we don’t have the right to protest.
If we need the permission of courts or the police to protest, we don’t have the right to protest.
And if we don’t have the right to protest, we don’t. have. a. democracy.

Does anyone have any experience using a #DJIMini4Pro (or similar) to create aerial imagery?
I’m interested in creating aerial imagery and contributing it to #OpenAerialMap for use by #OpenStreetMap contributors.
How much flight time and disk space does it take to create imagery for (say) a 500m² area? And what kind of quality can I expect?
Also, will I need any proprietary/restrictively-licensed software for it, or is #OpenDroneMap and other freedom-respecting (“open source”) software enough?

And yes, services cost money, but that’s no excuse to make something proprietary. Prāv is a great example - it’s libre licensed, and is funded by donations (moving to subscriptions in the near future). For another method, see https://contrapunctus.codeberg.page/blog/free-software-funding-2.html
