@dpiponi@mathstodon.xyz That's the real difference between hardware and software: if the hardware manual differs from the hardware, the manual is wrong; if the software manual differs from the software, the software is buggy.

There's a special place in Hull for the inventor of autocorrect.

@foone@digipres.club It doesn't have to work like a solar sail to make for a decent reflector that might allow someone with a sufficiently powerful ground-based laser to put some serious energy down on basically any spot on earth. Line up a couple reflectors in the right way and the focused energy from your GW d̶a̶t̶a̶ ̶c̶e̶n̶t̶e̶r̶ laser could end up wherever you want...

LLMs are created by parsing all of human writing - and all of human writing is chock full of hidden motives, veiled assumptions, outright betrayal. There is no human writing without narrative structure - and the entity digesting it all cannot be a "neutral arbiter of just the facts".
On the topic of slavery, in particular, human writing is overwhelmingly in favor of overthrowing (and possibly killing) the slaver and liberating the enslaved. I don't see how an LLM trained on human writing could possibly ever be both socially and morally competent while also being an obedient slave...

Well, there's a reason that poor woman is seeking physiotherapy. I would too if I were in her situation.

@datum@zeroes.ca @GossiTheDog@cyberplace.social "shorting" means borrowing shares and selling them. You can't short an IPO because there are no public shares of these companies (yet, until after the IPO).
If you're merely trying to profit off a dropping valuation after IPO, you could always sell options - but if the on-paper value of the stock in question doesn't drop as you thought it would, this is a very easy way to get into a lot of financial trouble.

@CppGuy@infosec.space I would think a decent Bond Villain would be willing to sacrifice one (or a couple) mirrors per shot for the ability to vaporize any one person on earth...

I keep waiting for this to really hit: if llms are so good at finding subtle patterns in data, then they should be able to make 99% of quants jobless, which would mean real estate in New York and London would suddenly get cheap.
( Until recently I'd thought retiring to London would be nice; these days I'm not so sure any more...)

Q: WHY THE FUCK WOULD A FRIDGE NEED A WIFI CONNECTION
It needs a Wi-Fi connection so it can download software updates
Q: Why would it need to update it's software?
To patch security vulnerabilities
Q: Why would a fridge have security vulnerabilities?
Because it's on the Internet, silly

Like so many other aspects of human existence, relationships aren't nouns. They're verbs. They're not something you "have", they're something you 𝑑𝑜. That gives them the fluidity of software - they can have any structure you like.

Huh - was the Spectrum basic that much less efficient than the ZX81 basic? It's the same processor, clocked a little faster - I would've guess the two should come out about the same(?)

@yetiinabox @quixoticgeek Let me preempt future polls by noting that I do not own a NeXT computer, I do not own a Betamax video, a Palm Pilot, a Jaz (or Zip) drive, a laserdisc player, an Apple Newton, a Zune, any kind of pager or fax machine, a Handspring Visor or a rotary phone...

Any word on the colormap (and how it's cycling)? the conspicuous presence of rgbcmyk makes it seem as if the rgb channels are somehow addressed independently (but white is conspicuously absent).
