I deserve a reward: I saw people posting confident but wrong "facts" about the British rail system on Fedi and resisted the temptation to correct them

@ireneista@adhd.irenes.space I've always found "instruction, destination, source" an unintuitive style of notation and always wondered if it's because I've only seriously tried to learn assembly on Z80 when I was a young girl, and Zilog went source, destination @static@aus.social

Every time a trans femme posts about facial feminising surgery, my brain reads "FFS" the other way "wow, everyone who gets that surgery gets really pissed off by it!"

@LilahTovMoon@tech.lgbt Ooh this is interesting - I have experience with the European sector where it's essentially very similar but the "regional" organisations - some of which operate over multiple nations - operate the trading market between energy producers and supply companies. Although in theory the markets can run their market how they like, in practice it's quite tightly constrained by European rules to minimise the amount of power transferred over cross-border interconnect, which in practice puts quite tight constraints on how the regional markets can operate and what types of bids the market participants can place. My favourite bit is that the algorithm that implements these rules is called "Euphemia" - some work must have gone into engineering that algorithm! @brass75@twit.social

The temptation to write a movie script containing only the Scheria section of The Odyssey. It wouldn't be a grand epic full of warfare, but it would be *interesting*

@JamesWidman@mastodon.social the bit "there's no evidence anyone does this" is telling - there's never any evidence if you shut your eyes I sometimes use Welsh for variable names - I'm not even fluent, but it's a good way to improve my fluency (Ironically Welsh is poorly-served by Unicode: the language has its own distinct, well-defined alphabet with unique letters, but those letters are written as digraphs - dd, ll, ng are some examples - so they've never, to my knowledge, been admitted to Unicode as code points)

Reasons I feel a bit Cassandra-ish, part 94: Saying for about 20 years that PostgreSQL is the best SQL DB for most use cases. The rest of the world I think finally started agreeing after it became easily available in Azure. Circa 2015 I took over running an AWS-hosted system which had been designed to use two RDS databases, one MySQL, for the majority of the data, and one PostgreSQL with PostGIS, for one single query that mapped position coordinates to timezone. And most of the devs my team were taking over from... didn't really even understand what PostgreSQL *was*, or why they were using it, other than it being a magic box for this one TZ query. Certainly they had no idea they could have consolidated on a single RDS for everything by dropping MySQL. (Partly that was because That One Query was written *really, really* badly: when I took over, it was the biggest bottleneck in the system. After I touched it, that query sped up like x20)
