If I lease an EV through Octopus at say £300 (including insurance and maintenance) but save at least £140 per month in fuel that makes the net cost to me ~£120 The purchase price of my car was £3500 and assuming it needs the same in keeping it going for 5 years (optimistic, needs a cambelt & tires) that doesn't make owing it much cheaper than renting an EV (which has a much lower incremental cost per mile). That's comparing a 15 year old Volvo with a new EV, so not exactly a fair comparison...

Not sure it'll be worth buying and fixing cheap cars if fuel prices stay like this. I save money doing work myself but the unit cost of EV motoring is just so much lower, and far less maintenance is needed overall. I'll have to move on to cheap EVs...no such thing right now!

My Suica has been vandalised! It transpires this has a leuco rewritable coating, so special products (like this 1 day season) are literally lasered onto the front (including a map!) and overwritten/removed once used. Extremely extra but very cool. I've never seen one of these in the wild before. https://www.ricoh.com/technology/tech/062_laserrewritable

@eta@gotosocial.i.eta.st I find them really confusing. Some gantries on the M25 only have 50% of VMS' working - how should I parse a 50 displayed on only 2 lanes? And recently I was driving back and the limit kept jumping up and down between gantries. I was stationary and watched it flick down from 60 -> 50 -> 40 in 30s at one point, before going back up. Doesn't seem like anyone has considered the human factors element, especially when they do camera enforcement on these.

rLab 🤝 Øl Telecom 🤝 Telekline

@kline@mastodon.sdf.org has done a fantastic job laser etching into the prison phones; we now have 3 phones in the space (and need to improve our crimping skills) thanks to the other half of @halfy@mastodon.half-shot.uk 🙏

Time for plane no. 2. I enjoyed the 10 minutes spent landside at Shanghai. Culturally, even though this is a fairly major international airport, it felt very different to the West. The sheer number of staff milling around! The immigration agents had a sort of parade with their stamps. Security felt rather dated in comparison, although certainly effective. My bag was dissected several times!

🇯🇵 I am visiting Japan in May. Fedi is definitely keen on the country, so I am soliciting recommendations and suggestions for things to visit.

I do not have a specific itinerary, but I do have a map, the mandatory Lonely Planet and probably a JR pass.

All ideas gratefully received :blobbowing:

@keyboardpipette@genomic.social TrainSplit, which is an independent retailer. They do the best split tickets, have an extremely powerful booking engine (which lets you search for itineraries other engines simply can't find), seat maps for most (every?) train, actual customer service who reply to emails... But as has been observed, Interrail (or BritRail) is likely to be the cheapest method if you're not a resident.

I am intending to get a JR Pass. Anyone want to dissuade me from that? Haven't done the calculations in depth, but from reading Seat61 it seems I'll get most of the value back from the few long distance Shinkansens (up and down the country), so any savings buying individual tickets will be marginal.

@marksteward@mastodon.social Yeah, short of putting it all in a spreadsheet (which I don't want to do, and my itinerary is incomplete in any case)... I'm willing to pay a small premium for the additional flexibility & lack of hassle. What's particularly difficult about the JR East/West split?

@russss@chaos.social @RichiH@chaos.social I looked (not very deeply) at interfacing Slot Machine with Pretalx for MCH... It's just a bit too custom, and making it work with the open-ended configuration in Pretalx was too complicated. So we just did post-its.

It'll be interesting to see the SMMT registration figures for this year and whether there's been another swing towards hybrids/EV. I expect the used EV market is running rather hot right now with oil prices where they are & more affordable cars being sold on as people trade up.
