@halla@kde.social For some thoughts on including color, and a few other tips, see here: https://stefanbohacek.com/blog/polls-about-alt-text-on-social-media/#including-color-in-image-description
You're right, though, if you don't really on alt text, it may be hard to know when you did a good job.
My advice would be, don't overthink it, continue to put in your best effort, and be open to feedback!
Replying to
@christophegueret Right. Shouldn't be a reason to skip it though.
Replying to
@afewbugs Thank you for the mention!
And yes, @AndyDearden, already boosted this!
@DazzlingDamo @RickiTarr
Replying to
@sinituulia@eldritch.cafe Yes, similar ideas have been floated around, and I myself have run a weekly alt text challenge, for a little while.
Definitely many ways we can bring attention to this cause, and lead by example!
Replying to
@jplebreton @qaris Yep, exactly!
Replying to
@sinituulia@eldritch.cafe Thank you so much, really appreciate it!
Replying to
@sinituulia@eldritch.cafe Yes, it's unfortunate that the call to "turn off" images on World Sight Day and/or Global Accessibility Awareness Day didn't get wider support from admins.
For some people, this really is the only way to understand the importance of making sure everyone feels included.

At least we have folks, like you, reminding us of this daily!
Replying to
@mothninja@beige.party Yeah, that was a tough one, thank you for putting in the effort!
And thank you @D_J_Nathanson@esq.social for tagging me!
@herzleid@wandering.shop
Replying to
@wordsmith@writing.exchange Yes, very nice, excellent woodworking and writing skills!
Just a heads-up, there is a few small typos, eg. kinfisher/kingfisher, "base is burn/burnt color(?)".
@bisonrimant@piaille.fr Thank you for tagging me!
Replying to
@TeflonTrout@beige.party Yes, a little whimsy is often appreciated! (As long as you don't stray too far away from the intended purpose of alt text!)

@pelha@mstdn.social You're welcome!
Sounds like you might enjoy following @PleaseCaptionBot@hachyderm.io. A similar reminder bot helped me get used to adding alt text back on Twitter.
After just a few days, it really becomes a second nature!

And as always, worth adding that if you can't add alt text yourself, be sure to use the Alt4Me tag!

@crazyeddie@mastodon.social Hopefully the alt text was descriptive enough!
Replying to
@pelha@mstdn.social I see you're using Tusky.
Try going back to your post, tap "...", select "Edit", then tap the icon overlaying the image (letter A with a checkmark) and tap "Set caption".
Hope this helps!
@hausgeist@todon.eu Very sorry for whatever happened to you that made you this bitter and violent.

As some pointed out, the example alt text could be improved for folks not too familiar with capybaras, or yuzu fruits.
Something like this might work:
"A capybara, a large rodent animal with brown fur, sitting in water, with its head poking out, looking relaxed.
Yellow yuzu fruits, a citrus fruit similar to lemons, are floating in the water, and one is balanced on top of the capybara's head."
Still, very much following this guide. Good reminder to always keep your audience in mind!
Replying to
@forestine Yes, love that feature!

@sir_toootenstein I'm here to educate AND entertain!

@jupiter_rowland That's a good point!

@nachtet @Deus @ChanceyFleet Right, many servers have a translation enabled, so this still works! https://stefanbohacek.online/@stefan/112032360645638338

Replying to
@fifi65 @karengregory No problem!
I'm guessing that it helps decide how to crop the image on platforms/in apps that don't show the full image by default.
Replying to
@ScotttSee @karengregory There are differing opinions. I generally include it if it's relevant, if it's something I'd like to know about the image if I couldn't see it myself.
Replying to
@fifi65 My pleasure!
Replying to
@fifi65 @karengregory Not at all!
I'd say it's just the most important part of the image you want to bring the attention to?
Or maybe you can elaborate on the question, if I'm missing something.
Replying to
@Orb2069 I don't think that matters. Is that your argument against helping disabled people?

Replying to
@Orb2069 Well what was your point then? "But alt text helps train AI" comes up a lot as some sort of an argument against using it.
Maybe you meant something else then?
Replying to
@pelha@mstdn.social Just to rule out the obvious, you are putting in mstdn.social as your server, right?
Assuming that this is correct, I'm not sure if I'll be able to help here much, sorry!
Perhaps you can try reaching out to @Tusky@mastodon.social on here and share any error messages you might be getting?
Replying to
@pelha@mstdn.social No problem, good luck!
Replying to
@Orb2069 Alt text is not only used by blind people. Not all blind people were born blind. There are different types of blindness.
Yes, sorry, I apologize for jumping to conclusions. I see now you're trying to do a "gotcha question" without understanding the topic at all, my bad.
Replying to
@ki @karengregory You can always use the "Alt4Me" hashtag if you need help!
