Yesterday I fixed the Fairphone 5 audio on my Archlinux system, just for myself (afaik I'm the only user of my FP5 stuff).

Within that day, @wrenix@social.chaos.fyi submitted a pmOS patch and 3 separate people already approved it (with Luca not even being one of them).

@FestplattenSchnitzel@social.anoxinon.de even ported the fix to the FP4 and tested it.

PostmarketOS might not be able to win me over from Arch with their software, but the community they managed to build is impressive.

Thanks to the great work done by @wrenix@social.chaos.fyi, @valpackett@social.treehouse.systems, and many others (certainly not me), I've finally gotten calls working on my Fairphone 5.

While there's some kinks left to be ironed out, call quality is excellent out of the box (certainly better than my PinePhone (Pro)).

I've pushed a `linux-sc7280-calls` kernel to my arch repo for anyone who wants to try it. The following PR discussion should help set it all up:

Apparently the Fairphone 5 microphone not working with automatic wireguard call profile switching was just a race condition with q6voiced:

https://gitlab.postmarketos.org/postmarketOS/q6voiced/-/work_items/3

This means I now have calls working at a usable level with great quality on the Fairphone 5.

Since ArchLinux users must love the bleeding edge, I'm shipping this as default with my packages, so it should work out of the box going forward:

Just saw that they open sourced warp (the terminal that turned into LLM slop) and decided to look at some of the remaining terminal emulation pieces.

There's some *interesting* similarities in the terminal code I've looked at so far:

Warp:
https://github.com/warpdotdev/warp/blob/master/crates/warp_terminal/src/model/ansi/control_sequence_parameters.rs#L15

Alacritty:
https://github.com/alacritty/vte/blob/master/src/ansi.rs#L819

Interesting how quickly an Apache (and in parts MIT) license can turn into AGPL.

Took me a bit of time (and ~$15 worth of Flathub CI costs) to figure out, but a Flatpak of Kumo with Servo support is now available:

https://flathub.org/en/apps/org.catacombing.kumo

Don't use Flatpak myself, but I'm kinda curious if Servo works with the Flatpak.

Over a year ago I tried adding Servo support to my browser and failed. A month ago I tried again, but some crucial things were still missing upstream.

After spending the weekend adding touch context menu support to Servo, I finally managed to get it in a spot where I'm willing to let other people try.

It's not quite ready for release yet, but if testing reveals no issues, I'll hopefully be able to publish a new version in the coming weeks.

A little preview of the multi-engine behavior in Kumo:

To quickly try out a website in a different engine, you can just reload it in WebKit/Servo through the context menu.

Kumo will remember which engine was last used for a domain and use that engine for all new tabs for that domain going forward. That way if you're interested in a new browser engine, you can transition one website at a time, rather than requiring a complete browser change.

Little bit of a #Rust rant:

The fact that the best way to find out what a feature flag does, is looking at the library's source Cargo.toml and hoping they've documented the features, is insane.

The comments on features should be standardized, enforced with a cargo warning, then tools like crates.rs can pull and document them automatically.

After about 3 hours, I'm finally done migrating all Catacomb projects over from GitHub to SourceHut: https://sr.ht/~undeadleech/catacomb I was surprised to realize that GitHub did not automatically subscribe me to many of my own projects, finding some open issues in the process. Didn't think it was going to take this long, but there's been a lot of projects piling up. If someone finds some old GitHub links, please let me know. #linuxmobile #catacomb #sourcehut

Kumo 1.8.1 fixes a couple bugs that probably went unnoticed by everyone but me. Baby steps.

Maybe it's time to get calls working on my Fairphone 5…

Just released a new version of Catacomb & Epitaph.

Catacomb's main changes are the automatic calculation of a device's scale and the ability to define deadzones for devices with rounded corners and camera cutouts.

Epitaph now allows full configuration of its modules based on device orientation, which should also help with devices that have cutouts.

Charon 1.7.0 brings idle inhibition while the GPS is locked and fixes issues with startup on some compositors:

https://git.sr.ht/~undeadleech/charon/refs/v1.7.0

First time doing a release through SourceHut, seems like I should put the changelog in the tag's message.

@Oleksii@social.linux.pizza Currently it's not packaged for pmOS because of issues with Skia on armv7, so the best way to try it is compiling from source or using my arch repo. However there is an issue that I'll hopefully fix tomorrow which is preventing it from launching on non-catacomb compositors: https://todo.sr.ht/~undeadleech/charon/6 I don't usually do Flathub for stuff that should be relatively easy to compile.

@Oleksii@social.linux.pizza You need to enable either raw or nmea GPS mode (both are supported, but FP5 only does nmea for example):

mmcli -m any --location-enable-gps-nmea
mmcli -m any --location-enable-gps-raw

Then you can set the polling rate to whatever you want:

# This sets polling rate to every 10s.
mmcli -m any --location-set-gps-refresh-rate 10

@Oleksii@social.linux.pizza Got some good news, just managed to fix the startup issue. So compiling from source with the latest master should work on any compositor now. Charon talks to ModemManager directly, bypassing geoclue (which frequently messes with GPS settings). This allows you to setup polling rate yourself. Charon will follow the polling rate set in the modem.

Aevum 2.3.1 uses the RTC offset to schedule alarms on systems with read-only RTCs. This finally fixes the last remaining reason I had to use the PinePhone Pro over the Fairphone 5.

@allpurposemat@mastodon.gamedev.place I'm testing with my own map app and my NMEA location positioning has been very accurate, even inside my apartment.

I would recommend just checking with mmcli -m any --location-get and trying to parse the NMEA GPS data by hand. If that gets you accurate data, it should just be a matter of finding an app that works for you.

Also make sure NMEA is actually enabled with --location-status. I could imagine that just 3gpp could be quite inaccurate, which is the default.

@allpurposemat@mastodon.gamedev.place GPS routing using NMEA GPS should work. You need to have the modem-gnss service running and that enables NMEA GPS to work through ModemManager.

@rhandos Honestly it checks out that someone who can't be bothered to use a native UI toolkit decides to go all-in on the slop. The goal was from the start to never put any actual effort in.

@allpurposemat@mastodon.gamedev.place If it says capabilities, that means it's available but not enabled. It should look like the following picture. So it's NMEA capable, it's enabled, AND it's refreshing every X seconds. If any of this is missing, whatever you use to enable GPS isn't doing it right.

@jecture@mastodon.social This kinda paints scrolling regions like some rarely used special tool irssi managed to make work for its purposes, but that's not really accurate. Vim uses them, WeeChat uses them, with traditional terminal applications they're everywhere (for good reason). LLM CLIs are just some of the worst terminal applications ever created.
