Maybe I have to block all of the Kollektiva instance. I’m getting tired of arguing with other lefties who are a bit too quick to indulge in bloodthirsty rhetoric about Jews, or who think being Jewish is something to accuse me with. I know not everyone on there does that, but it’s becoming a theme, and hey, what’s a little collective punishment among friends? It’s the hip political logic of today!

Thing is, Macklemore actually is anti-Semitic. Not because of what he said about Palestine, obviously. Because of the time he dressed up on stage as a hook-nosed Jewish caricature. So let’s please cancel #Macklemore for the correct reasons, not the wrong ones

My great-grandfather left his shtetl in the Pale and came to America for three reasons. 1) to avoid the pogroms. 2) to avoid impressment and involuntary service in the Czar's army. (I thought that was a hell of a thing. Either the cossacks come and try to kill you, or you could be forced into the military to serve involuntarily for twenty years. Or both!) 3) To get away from the Rabbi. He was sick of it. Sick of the stifling traditional life. #Judaism

@emily_rugburn@lgbtqia.space I guess we were kind of fortunate in that all or nearly all of the still-living 1st-degree relatives of my direct ascendants came over. The ones who remained were uncles/aunts, cousins and so forth. Some of them went to France before the war, and I have (somewhat distant) relatives there. An offshoot survived. Everyone else is gone. I don't even have a good family tree to know who was still there who died. The shtetls I know I had relatives in were all "liquidated", of course.

My sort of back of the envelope figure is that one borrowing of an ebook costs the library system on the order of ten times as much as one borrowing of the physical book. A common contract for an ebook via Libby is a two-year rental that allows 26 circs, for—depending—something like a hundred bucks. That’s a few dollars per circ. Hardback books cost about a third that much and circulate many more times. Probably tens of cents per circ or better.

This third place game is hilarious! It was 4-0 to England, but now it’s 4-3 — and I bet it’s going to finish 5-4 to France. There’s still 20 minutes left! Straight up goofballs and nobody will really care, except maybe Messi, who will now have to score a couple in the final to retain the golden boot over Mbappé #FRAENG #FediFC #WorldCup #WorldCup2026

I had these three leeks I got at the grocery. I used some of them, and only had part of the white ends in the crisper box in the fridge. They kept putting out a little new growth at the cut ends, so, eventually, when I hadn’t eaten them, I stuck them in a container. Nothing more than three a-few-inches-long stubs. Well, one of them has survived, and the seed head is about to open. I am going to save the seeds, and start leeks early next spring #gardening #LifeFindsAWay

I have one. I have clear memories of using a crayon called "flesh” that was a pale dun color. The racist crayon. There is also clear evidence this crayon stopped existing years before I was a crayon-using child. It's perhaps barely possible there were old stock crayons in the schools, but it's much more likely that this memory isn't true, even though - it feels like it is. I also really thought it was Bearenstein Bears but that was obviously just a kid's misreading.

I was reading a couple of Mandela effect threads on reddit, and it's not only very clear that most human memories are approximate at best, but people cannot be brought to believe it - to the degree that people who have a Mandela effect experience, and who are otherwise ordinary, reasonable folks, will start dreaming up monumental global conspiracies to explain why there was once a popular genie movie with Sinbad in the title role, and it's been erased from existence.

Dreamed I found a free parking garage that had a shrink ray. The attendants shrank cars down to the size of matchbox toys, so the garage could hold a huge number of cars. But it made it really hard to find your car later

It's weird when you don't share one of the common Mandela Effect memories. I never had the impression that a genie movie with Sinbad ever existed and I don't know why people do. Nor do I have the common memory of Mandela dying in jail, or of a burglar emoji that vanished, or a cornucopia in the fruit of the loom logo. Those seem silly to me, but people believe in them with the same weird fervor.
