Deadline to file as a candidate for Clacton passed, and full list of candidates announced. I heard a rumour that Farage failed to file in time, but that seems not to be true. Twenty independents, Three candidates from the Monster Raving Loony party, a bunch of small parties, and the two fore-runners: Nigel Farage and Count Binface Thirty Four candidates at an election is a British record. One clear unity candidate. Every vote for the Count counts! https://www.tendringdc.gov.uk/news/clacton-voters-to-choose-next-mp-as-by-election-candidates-confirmed #clacton #countBinface #farage

@simeon@indiehackers.social It does not seem sane to allow the bad-guys bullets while the good guys aren't allowed even shields. And AI is already pointed at code more than the "many eyes" of early open source days. There are a torrent of bugs. It can not be right to turn the fixes down?

But the maintenance workload really has increased here. These machines are producing a torrent of exploits, some fraction of which are real and serious. Certainly eyes-on every one of them, but if they are short, obvious, correct, and exactly what you'd have done anyway? 🤷 What do you want me as a maintainer to do? Change the variable names? Leave the exploit? Or automate the copy-and-paste, so I don't even check it? I am not in favor of that last one, but I can't defend the idea that programmers should leave their users vulnerable because it was a machine that found the bug.

They really are talking about piping claude directly into root access on the prod servers so it can run the upgrades though. Apparently adding "Oh, and really important: don't do anything bad without asking" to the prompt is a safe-guard! It'll ask before it deletes the database I guess, so no need to worry! Nice. And you know what? That would probably mostly be okay. It might even do it better than me, I am a barely adequate system-administrator. Until it doesn't.

That's it then, he's met the king and is the new PM. Reckons that first things first, he's going to end rough-sleeping. Apparently something they tell me he achieved in Manchester. Corbyn's big first day announcement if he won was going to be that he would end homelessness immediately. Which can only really mean putting the homeless into hostels and hotels. But good. Certainly that's an about-fucking-time sort of announcement. If he ends people having to sleep on the streets in the first week then I can only approve of that. #burnham #homelessness #ukpol

re: UKPol Burn ham or Burn Oil?
Burn ham or Burn Oil? Sounds like first policies are going to be more oil drilling and taking "control" of Thames Water. Note that more oil drilling will NOT reduce the price of energy to the consumer, nor do much to increase sovereign energy independence. It will however mean lots of profits to the party donors from the oil industry, and of course mean more heat-domes and wildfires and floods and rising sea levels. More death from heatstroke. Note also that "control" of Thames Water is not nationalization, not "ownership", it's just really more (likely toothless) regulation of private industry. Welcome to the new boss, same as the old boss. RE: https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2026-07-16/burnham-to-back-north-sea-oil-and-take-control-of-thames-water #labour #ukpol #burnham

There's no other unity candidate against Farage, and half the people in the constituency will vote strongly against the fuckface and so for the binface. Buy at 5% and sell at 20% before the election would likely be a good move. But the man won't allow it. Grr. Curse the man.

UKPol kids banned
OBrien on the radio thinks that its okay to ban kids from Youtube even though their exam revision videos are on youtube, because the revision videos will just end up somewhere else. He thinks though that the suicide encouragement and terrible anorexia mutual support will not simply end up somewhere else I guess. 🤷‍♂️ "No downside to this at all" he reckons. 🤣 "Nobody sensible can be against this ban" This is what irks me most. The absolute refusal to see any issues at all in the ban. Just refusing to understand that there's any support help or encouragement for kids on these forums. That they are only places for radicalisation and bullying. TikTok, Snapchat, Instagram, YouTube, Reddit, Twitch, X, Threads, Facebook and Kick. I note that Bluesky didn't make the blacklist. I expect it'll be added during debate. Can't list everything though, so the kids will surely just go to whoever isn't listed? 4-chan seems to not be included? What a strange list. I don't use any of them besides Youtube so won't be forced into ID checks for them myself. My youtube account is itself over 18 years old so don't think they'll ask. #ukpol #socialMedia

Richard Murphy has a good story here about why the coming crash will be the biggest ever, and caused by OpenAI, Anthropic, and SpaceX.

Because these 3 IPOs are about to happen, and be massive, they will immediately and right away take up a large fraction of the S&P and Nasdaq stock indexes.

That means all the fund managers who run funds tracking the S&P and Nasdaq will have to buy enough of those 3 companies to make them a large fraction of the funds. Selling everything else to buy OpenAI, Anthropic, and SpaceX. Pumping their prices further.

Now the valuations of those companies is based on them being able to do all the jobs really. Which they can't. Because there isn't enough water or power, even if they do have the compute.

So they have to crash back down to something that isn't this fund-inflated price, isn't this overvalued price where you assume there's infinite water and power, but is a realistic price much much lower.

And that tanks everything so much they rich will be begging for bailouts because they continue to use to much margin.

UKPol Shabana Mahmood
Burnham removing Mahmood from Home Secretary is great. Being an authoritarian monster, she belongs on the back benches not anywhere near the seat of government. 👂️👈 Wait, I'm hearing that she's to be the chancellor instead? Well, um. Oh. Okay. Promoting Shabana Mehmood to chancellor seems to be the most weak dumb move Burnham could possibly make. She's authoritarian and fiscally inexperienced having shown no sign she understands what money is or how investment works or what a fiscal multiplier is. She'll likely treat the budget like a household or business accounts. Good luck everyone. #ukpol #ShabanaMahmood

I'm told we have another late entry to the by election competition. A fox. Not the fox pictured with binface surrounding Burnham on his win. This fox is called Laurence. From what little I know of him, he's more likely to take votes from Farage than Count Binface. Similar sort of slimy awful grifter as Farage is. Does this make the count more likely to win or less? On its own it would seem to make Farage more likely to lose?

So, maybe all you really can hope for from an acceptance speech is a bit of empty rhetoric, but that is indeed what we got here. Unity and decentralization and a promise that he has a plan. Unity is easy to say, but requires unity to achieve since you ain't in control of all the factions. Decentralization tends to be fought by centralized powers, and is a tactic really not a strategy. What do you hope to achieve with it? Can end up just remote offices for centralized power. And that plan he reckons he has? I look forward to hearing what it actually is. #ukpol #burnham

People are saying the public are massively uninformed because they think migration is going up even though actually net migration has gone down so much it's frankly a threat to the economy.

But the people don't think the way the statisticians think. When they are asked "Is migration going up" they say, "Yeah, sure, lots of extra migrants are turning up every year."

And they are NOT wrong. Net migration is still a positive number. The number of immigrants in the country is still increasing.

The idiots correctly think the press is just pulling a fast one. Doing some numbers trick to pretend the number of immigrants is going down when it is in fact still going up.

The idiots are wrong about whether immigration is good or bad, they are wrong about the reasons they want it to be lower, it is terrible news that net migration has dropped so much.

But they aren't wrong about the press trying to pull the wool over their eyes and trying to trick them into thinking it's going down when in fact it's just going up slower.

@Lazarou@mastodon.social Its the authoritarian streak I dislike the most about them. Banning protests, banning protest groups as terrorists, imprisoning grannies as terrorists for holing up signs, threatening jury trials, increasing web surveillance, getting into bed with Palantir. They seem to think the only thing government is good for is cracking down on citizen rights. Everything else should be private enterprise. They only nationalize Steel now because they can't find a buyer. Won't touch the water companies. Won't touch electric companies. None of this is going to change in a new leader. They are dead to me until they reverse that Palestine Action ban, which nobody floated as leader is talking about. And frankly probably just dead to me forever for doing all this crap.

@shonin@c.im There's certainly people in the Labour Party arguing to open new oil fields in the North Sea. Which, because of the way international oil markets work, won't even actually reduce the price of energy to the consumer or do much to increase sovereign independence, but would give some tax receipts to the exchequer and lots of profits to the party donors from the oil industry. Not sure you need to think about entropy to realize that it's a mistake, and that it'd end with more heatdomes and super-el-ninio and wildfires and heatstroke death. Andy's team has people for and also people against it. We'll see which faction wins out.

@lydiaconwell@todon.nl They have no coherent vision of what government could or should be. They don't have any actual desires or targets themselves, just want power. So they chase the voters, try and triangulate the most popular position on the board. Which, yeah, does also have the additional constraint of not annoying the donors which allow them to run the whole show in the first place. So they look for a position which can't offend the rich who are the donors, and attracts the most votes. No coherent plan, no model of how the country or the government or the world or the money work to plan from. Just chase policies the dumbass racist people of the country want, even if that's an incoherent mix of punishing the poor and the minorities and tax-breaks for the wealthy. Hard to imagine anyone from their current crop actually understanding anything and having a plan that isn't "chase voters" too.

@lydiaconwell@todon.nl Their attempt at countering Reform is the most wrong-headed stupid response you could imagine: Copying Reform Policy. They try to meet the threat of a different party being popular by aping the different party, in an attempt to attract their voters. This doesn't work, obviously. It's counter-productive. It affirms Reform's concerns, validates that Reform's response to those concerns is sensible, and then offers a watered-down and worse (from the wrong-headed point of view of a Reform voter) version of their policy. And that's the party all over. They chase voters instead of leading.

They only write for Big Capital and never even explore owning their own website. Makes me wonder if they're only doing it for the wage and don't really believe it.

I might be in favor of an AI strike, but I don't really understand what the proponents wants us to do? That machine is finding security bugs that matter, and you can't run a repo that refuses those patches. What are you going to do? Just let your users /by default/ refuse those security patches? Just because they were discovered by a machine? That ain't the right answer. I don't understand what people who want an absolute strike against AI want from the workforce? Is it literally to let security patches go un-merged? I would sooner support a full-stop to all programming work than that I think. #ai #strike

@simeon@indiehackers.social Is that a good line though? There is so much boiler-plate. A huge amount of programming is basically copying and pasting anyway. How AI does your AI have to be to not just be writing the boiler-plate? As a union drawing a line at which we withdraw work it's a good line. But it will mean lots of fairly pointless minor editing of boilerplate which could otherwise be automated.
