I am currently conversing in a forum thread about Linux Audio, and a couple of developers are saying that it is not worth it to develop for Linux. They are complaining that Linux users are only a tiny fragment of the population, and it is a waste of development time. Is there developer here in the Fediverse that can give me some positive quotes of their experiences in Linux Audio development that I can give to balance the argument a bit? #Linux #LinuxAudio #MusicProduction #Plugins #VST3 #FOSS

Open source doesn't mean developers don't need funding—it just means they're using a different business model, like Ardour.

Consider donating to your favorite projects to help keep them alive. Here are some suggestions:

  • Ardour
  • Linux Studio Plugins
  • Qtractor
  • Zrythm
  • Airwindows
  • FalkTX's projects
  • Surge Synth Team
  • Brummer10 (Hermann)
  • Giada
  • LiquidSFZ
  • Linux Sampler
  • Socalabs
  • Geonkick
  • Element

I’m very sensitive to caffeine. It makes me anxious, but when I’m tired at work, a little can help. Today I drank just one can of Diet Coke and now I’m completely wired. My hands are shaking and my anxiety is through the roof--just ONE can! Meanwhile, I have friends who can drink two pots of coffee and go straight to sleep. I wish I understood the science behind caffeine sensitivity because it’s really weird! #Caffeine #Weird #Confession #Science #Medicine

I just bought Zebra 3 for my Linux DAW. This is the pinnacle of my Linux supersynths.

How can anyone reasonably say that music can't be created in Linux, when we have tools like this available to us?

@alisynthesis@io.waxandleather.com @bloognoo@retro.pizza @amadeus@mstdn.social But are there really "way fewer" Linux users? If you rule out OSX installs, MacOS comes to around 8.x% and there's only about a 5% difference between MacOS and Linux--even less, if statcounter would be fair and group ChromeOS with Linux desktops. 😉

@alisynthesis@io.waxandleather.com @amadeus@mstdn.social That's my fear as well. I've been pushing to have developers see that Linux is as viable for music production. I think the key is to make it as easy as possible for developers to support Linux, then numbers won't matter as much. But I'm not a developer, so I can't really speak to any knowledge about development.

I see many Linux Audio users post on KVR about their desire to move away from Microsoft's AI integration and telemetry concerns, and Apple's walled garden ecosystem and their planned obsolescence.

@mastodonmigration AI is just a tool. What matters in software is who uses it. Vibe coding is intuition‑driven, exploratory programming guided by feel; AI‑assisted development is goal‑driven coding where AI accelerates, checks, and scaffolds deliberate engineering decisions. A Vibe Coder with no development skill often ends up with slop. An AI‑assisted developer can work faster, with better results. Banning AI is not the solution—it misunderstands the problem.

@xenogon@sunny.garden Something is something. Little by little. Linux has made huge strides in improving things and getting easier. Example: the real-time patches for low latency were mainlined into the generic kernel last year, so no custom kernel compile is needed—GRUB boot parameters can handle it now. And PipeWire has resolved the old PulseAudio/JACK conflicts. Everything’s compatible now. 🙂
