#recommendations

My dad (who never asks for gifts) has made it known he wants a digital photo frame as a holiday gift this year. I'm doing my own research here, but I'd love recommendations if anyone has them! A couple key requirements:

  1. Must be functional without an Internet connection (by which I mean it must display and auto cycle through photos at a minimum; physical buttons or a touch screen would be ideal).

  2. High quality screen. Think like 1600x1200 on a 10-12" frame, with good color reproduction.

I have a budget of about $300, but I could go a bit higher for the perfect frame.

Thanks in advance for any guidance or suggestions here! As with anything else, the market is innundated with low quality crap and I'd really like to get him something decent.

In these-a-days of eh aye bots and vibe hacking and whatnot that all the kids are gettin' up to, are there extra recommendations for hardening security on a #Nextcloud AIO installation on my home network, accessible by me from the outside? I'm not a dev or sysadmin, but I can (slowly) work through guides, tutorials, etc. I've run Nextcloud for a few years from shared hosting (which is a pain in my whole entire bottom), so I know more or less how that process goes. #recommendations #infosec #security #selfhosted

Good morning / afternoon / evening! I am at the #Endorsement #meeting for our local #lgbtq+ #caucus. Right now, a mile-long line of #candidates are getting 30 seconds to speak. We started at the top of the hour. I served on the #screening #committee. The committee screened over 100 candidates. When the proceedings open, the first motion will be to close credentialing. The second will be to accept the #recommendations of our committee.

Last candidate just spoke. Now #event sponsors get an entire minute. #Endorsement #meeting #lgbtq #caucus #candidates #screening #committee #recommendations

We are done. We considered one hundred candidates. In most cases, the body accepted the recommendations of the screeners. The takeaway is that candidates who don't engage with us cannot expect to earn our endorsement. Some candidates who earned our endorsement in the primary failed to respond when asked whether they wanted to re-screen or be considered with the questionnaire and scores from the primary. They had three chances and didn't respond. #event #Endorsement #meeting #lgbtq #caucus #candidates #screening #committee #recommendations

These were top of the ticket candidates. The new screening chair gave them the grace to be considered despite their lack of engagement. The body voted to endorse them, but this was a wakeup call. #event #Endorsement #meeting #lgbtq #caucus #candidates #screening #committee #recommendations

I'm planning a trip to Oaxaca, Mexico with my mom for our 75th/45th birthdays. (We were supposed to do 70/40 but traveling 5 years ago was a hard no.) Anybody have any "don't miss this" suggestions for Oaxaca (city + coastal), or "skip it, it ain't great" thoughts? We're both mobile and fairly active. My mom can't really do boats anymore. We both love normal stuff: art/culture, mole (omg yum) and other Mexican cuisine, beautiful natural stuff, etc. #AskFedi #recommendations #travel #mexico

I haven't kept up with bigger releases for the past 10-20 years. So, for example, I'm always hearing people say stuff about some Frank Ocean album that was apparently great, and I haven't heard it and don't really know who he is. But I'm gonna check it out! Any recommendations for recent-ish albums you love by relatively popular artists? All genres welcome! (I know this is a very broad question, that's on purpose!) #AskFedi #Recommendations #Music

@matthew@social.retroedge.tech Without having looked at it closely, I wouldn't trust that it is. That's why a suggested mitigation until a kernel that's updated to fix the actual vulnerability is available is to block loading that module through a modprobe configuration override. https://www.cert.europa.eu/publications/security-advisories/2026-005/#recommendations

3/X “But there are algorithmic feeds for Mastodon?” — Yes, great tools exist, for example: ➡️ #BYOTA by @mala@fosstodon.org ➡️ #FediView by @adamghill@indieweb.social ➡️ #Fedialgo by @pkreissel@volksverpetzer.social .. but most are client-side. They can rerank your existing timeline, but can't make #recommendations from outside your follower bubble.

4/X Client-side #algorithms mean: ❌ No real improvement to content discovery across the #Fediverse. ❌ Interesting content from smaller accounts may never reach you. They simply rearrange whats already in your reach. We need server-side #recommendations to actually distribute content effectively.

6/X The #algorithm follows of a multi-stage pipeline that consists of the following main stages. 1️⃣ Sourcing: ~1000 Posts are fetched from various sources. 2️⃣ Ranking: Candidates are ranked by a machine learning model. 3️⃣ Sampling: Lastly, heuristics are applied to diversify #recommendations
