@earthshine I find it funny that we have become so widespread that if we were to be snapped out of existence, a not too insignificant amount of planes would literally fall out of the sky and globally critical infrastructure made inoperable.

@alexia@shrimp.starlightnet.work Kind of annoys me how much they shot themselves in the foot, if they just avoided that guy this could of been a genuinely great announcement that their officially taking Linux more seriously and providing support but yikes. First thing basically no one uses Omarchy and yet it gets an abnormal amount of attention by OEMs for a distro that pretty much didn't exist a year ago. Why aren't OEMs talking with more established distros. Second thing, surely their aware of the controversies this guy has had? Normal people don't get kicked out of their own projects by being level headed. That said I avoid Dell products like the plague generally.

@FurryBeta @cwebber I remember there being an interesting comment which was roughly "The main mistake of renewable proponents prior to this war was talking to the general crowd from an environmental and moral standpoint. Rather than the economics, as a lot of people do not understand why renewables are so much cheaper and better investments or really care much for the environment as much as other things. By showing how much cheaper renewables are, it undermines the fossil fuel lobby's main talking point."

@Bwaz @cwebber That and being able to enact decade long plans in advance consistently does mean that can just get ahead of a technology that other countries have been neglecting. As well as having a more centrally planned economy means they can just direct their industry into other markets. For example China knew they couldn't compete with the car industry of Japan and Germany's traditional cars, and instead directed companies to focus on EVs at a time when they were basically seen as impractical. The two countries' auto industry got complacent with ICE technology (the car one, not that one) that they delayed investment into EVs until it was looking like China was starting to eat their lunch. That said the authoritarian aspects of China to make this possible isn't great.

@susankayequinn@wandering.shop Also right now places like the US waste way more land growing corn for a bit more fuel security than what it would take to power it in it's entirety with solar (even in the worst case scenario with poor sun). So theoretically switching to renewables would allow for less land usage. That said I do feel we have reached the point where despite the US government's attempts, a transition to renewables is underway like it or not. It's too cheap not to. But also it reminds me of a story from a local sheep farmer here in Aus, where he had installed an array of solar panels a few years ago, and during that time a massive drought occurred... but surprisingly the ground near his panels had a lot more grass for his livestock to graze where everywhere else was left barren. Turns out the black body effect on the panels allowed for humidity to be converted into water which would water the ground beneath them. So not only did the revenue from energy generation helped his farm a lot, but panels protected it.

@stargazer I mean it depends...

  • 30+ computers is honestly pretty easy, offices and governments just want to offload their equipment they no longer have support contracts for and so will sell that hardware for dirt cheap or even free depending on the place. In most cases just installing and easy to use Linux distro to refresh them will likely be fine. Providing them to schools to give to poor students is a good way of giving them new life. It was after all the budget friendly way to build a gaming computer not that long ago.

  • 30 phones I guess, but honestly very limited in terms of devices in which this is possible sadly.

  • 30 hectares being 300000m² is definitely a bit much but community clean up days are a thing here. Not a one man thing.

  • Converting 30 people to a FOSS OS is a lot but some community projects like End of 10 have resources around physical places to help new users switch to FOSS.

  • Taking out 30 techbros, tbh the rate their going they might take out with them (and everything else).

@ulveon The only upside is once Chinese made supply catches up with demand and a lot of panic buying companies realise the stupidity of the situation it's likely to completely crash the market in a few years (and RAM cartel with it) like what has happened historically. But the news cycle claiming that it all good now is just embarrassing. At best demand might stabilise and at worse it might just increase much slower for now.

@light_bulbs @cwebber Heck even where I live, with a quite stable grid because solar energy is so productive due how intense the sun is here and fossil fuels being as expensive, while being volatile to shocks as they are means renewables have exploded as a % of the grid. With most instances finding people having paid off their solar installations in only 3 years from how much it cut their energy bills (for comparison places like the UK is around 7 years irrc). So that's practically 22 years worth of free or heavily reduced bills. Not only is it better for the environment but makes extreme amounts of economic sense while distributing the grid in a way that inherently more resistant than the centralised model that is most common today.

@RaymondPierreL3@aus.social Heck I come from a largely white, fairly low modern migration and older regional area, and I would say the vast majority of people who live here are disgusted by One Nation and MAGA-style politics. Kind of doesn't the "vibe" of a quiet area with a lot of union identity with a relatively progressive tone. So I'm not that worried despite the Witch's surge. Primarily for the fact that we have compulsory voting, which might actually protect us from PHON. Generally the trend everywhere right wing populist movements seem to cap out at around 30% of the electorate, but really struggle going much further than that. A likely reason being just how specific their demographic is, but also a cult of personality that is tied to an already unpopular foreign personality is an incredibly fragile foundation. But also you could see the "Dutton effect", where outside of some rhetoric they likely will fall apart like they did every time any campaign spotlight is given to them despite initial polling momentum.

@RaymondPierreL3@aus.social Heck the only real consistent policy that could appeal to the public they have of lowering migration likely will be undermined by recent massive drops in visa allocations by the recent budget (that's ironically half of what she suggests) and stricter visa requirements for students and WHVs. So she very much could lose her only talking point that allows her to indoctrinate people to the far right. Particularly once the housing market starts to calm down for tax and migration reform, she's got nothing. But yeah the cultural shift in recent years has been noticeable, there's more concern I feel for our at times authoritarian tendencies and a general dislike for our press.

@susankayequinn@wandering.shop Argovoltaics are kind of awesome given they make land dual purpose and provide farmers with revenue that's separate from the boom and bust cycle that is standard food production. Plus could help counter the effects of climate change causing higher humidity by converting it back to water and into the soil.

@earthshine It's kind of sad that their benchmark isn't "as fast as the hardware theoretically allows" and more "The operating system that doesn't even run most games natively, and was the result of a relatively small group of people spending years reverse engineering our own code and using poor, often incomplete API documentation". Like that's not the flex Microsoft seems to think it is and given their track record I don't even think they'll be able to accomplish that given that Linux gaming performance seems to be moving at a faster pace with more people putting attention into desktop Linux. Like I'm starting to get the impression Microsoft sees Windows (and Xbox) more as a burden that gets in the way of their more profitable ventures like MS Office or Azure.
