At some point I'm gonna have to have some folk look over all the machine-translated text on Theriodex for the interface localisation.
Anyone have any idea how much I should pay for someone to do that (per language)? The actual text is already there but it's machine translated so it would have to mostly be checked to make sure it actually makes sense / sounds natural and then be re-written if it's bad.
It's about 250 different strings (all in a YAML file) with about 1300 words in total I think (well in English at least). Most of them are pretty short. I think it's only a handful of longer sentences.
I was thinking about €30-50 should be fair?

@colinstu@birdbutt.com Ah damn, I'm sorry :< I definitely know what you mean though. My parents gave me a stack of DVDs and CDs with old photos and videos but unfortunately they were all stored very suboptimally (just kinda loosely tossed into a box and stuffed into the basement) and a bunch of them didn't work at all anymore or I was only able to get a small amount of photos from them :< But I'm happy I was able to get at least some!
But yeah. I also have a whole lot that I lost cause I wasn't always as diligent when it comes to data storage as I am now. Just trying to make sure I actually keep all the stuff I make / take now…

(I assume they're all still blank at least?)

https://theriodex.net can now be installed as a PWA! It still doesn't have a service worker or anything so it doesn't have any offline capabilities yet, but I thought it'd be fun to add it anyway so that you can add it almost like a real app to your phone or whatever.

I added a few smaller things to Theriodex (https://theriodex.net)
You can now type the name of a Pokémon or move into the URL bar rather than having to use the ID. It even works if you mistype! So https://theriodex.net/en/show/pokemon/vaporeeeon will work just fine! This works with moves, too: https://theriodex.net/en/show/move/Water Gun/gen/9.
I added a JSON endpoint for the search so that you can add it as a custom search engine to things like SearXNG! https://theriodex.net/en/json/search?q=vaporeon for example. It supports limiting the query with a limit query parameter also.
I also made the search a lot better. It's still not great, but at least it doesn't take several seconds for a search anymore. I already had a cache for the Pokémon data so that it could be searched more quickly than with a DB query, but I extended it so that it actually does include all data now. The cache gets built once when the server starts now and has all the data it needs for the Pokémon search! This does add around 5 MB of memory use for the entire hash that I am using as a cache, but I think that's okay for now.

I did a bunch more optimisations and stuff as well! I think the biggest factor was adding another worker and using a multi-worker Puma setup. But the new DB indices and a few other smaller things (such as some PRAGMAs I set) also helped!
This was with a Locust script with five somewhat heavy users! So not really a high load and you can see the old version struggled a ton even with such a low load
I still have to look into that failure rate! It only happens on my guessing game so I think there's some session handling problems there when several people are using it simultaneously.
I also did a 200 user test and the difference was even more stark there ☠️

One problem I have with having written / published a lot of stuff under "Hexaitos" is that I have no idea how to ever show anything to anyone irl or God forbid potential employers ☠️

@TheMNWolf@furry.engineer Thank you! That is a good point. I don't think the database has that anywhere… I'm still figuring out where all the stuff is for the evolutions in there
So I might have to write something myself. But thank you!

Fixed some more 500 errors on Theriodex and I thiiiinkkk that at least the English version of it should not throw any 500s anymore anywhere at least for the regular Pokémon and move information pages.
The latest error was that for some Pokémon moves it did not have data for every single version of a particular generation. But because I had a loop that looped through every name in a version and got the data for that version from my move information… well if there was no version with that name in the data, it was just nil and my loop just threw me a NoMethodError.
My fix for now was just using &.each rather than .each (so that its nil safe). Was the simplest / fastest solution for now haha

@forst@mastodon.social It sounds like 27 is included though?
and will be available through macOS 27
And then all subsequent versions will have some base support left but not the full Rosetta 2?

I've been doing some tests with to compare https://theriodex.net with the other big Pokémon sites and I wanted to see just how many ads and tracking they load and it's actually insane how how much their page weight (how much data is transferred) and (full) load time is reduced even by just using the regular Easylist as adblocking ☠️
This was testing each site's "Gligar" page with no cache and testing five times each (fives times with, five times without adblock).

@drakonic@wetdry.world No Polish at least not yet unfortunately! I am using PokéAPI's database and wanted to localise the UI in all the languages which the database has data for also which are: English, German (those two I know), French, Spanish, Italian, Japanese, Korean and Chinese (both traditional and simplified)
