Occasional musician and pokemon fan. Really likes Quilava a lot. Skarmory too.

I play a variety of instuments, including E-Bass and E-Guitar, Violin, Tsugaru Shamisen, Shakuhachi and didgeridoo with wildly varying levels of skill.

Notable projects of mine include:
* Making a fully complete soundfont out of all the instruments from PMD-EoS.
* Modding the entire OST from PMD-EoS into Trombone Champ.
* Running out of space in my bio.

Wandersong is an incredible game go play it!!!

@Elizafox@social.treehouse.systems @hsza@social.tudbut.de That much is true. I think public domain works like classical music and stuff has it figured out pretty well. I've never seen an adaptation of a classical composition that didn't attribute the original composer even though there wouldn't be any legal consequences for it. (though I imagine there's probably plenty of niche works that slip through the cracks)

@Elizafox@social.treehouse.systems Copyright and more broadly intellectual property tries to answer a simple seeming question: "How do you handle the economics of something that takes tons of money and/or effort to create once, but is virtually free to reproduce?" That question definitely needs to be answered. I wouldn't wanna live in a world where the expert in replicating and monetizing things gets everything while the expert at creating the original thing gets absolutely nothing.

I'm neither religious nor an atheist but a secret third thing to which the existence or nonexistence of a all-powerful deity is irrelevant.

I believe that it is more useful to learn from studying the world we live in than it is from studying the entity who made it.

On our mortal scale we do have a context in which an ordinary person could be considered a god: Video games. To learn to play one well we always examine it's internal mechanics and interactions, not who made made it.

slice of life anime that's entirely just ordinary people doing ordinary things in ordinary ways but it's presented so extremely over the top animation that something as simple as opening a door has the visual impact of an underdog protagonist fighting off gods.

Age/ID verification online feels like ID verification for going outside except less safe.

I can't get murdered online, I can't get assaulted online, I can't get kidnapped online, I CAN get robbed online but it is comparatively safe and easy to avoid, why the fuck are online spaces treated like deadly hazards when compared to going outside it's a cozy safe space even at the very worst of cases.

I swear that reasoning is 100% gonna be used to argue for chipping people later.

I have low key been considering making an alternative account somewhere on fedi where I post things completely unfiltered. Way too many times have I started writing a post only to end up overthinking the wording too much and deleting everything, or worrying too much about how that post might be perceived regarding this specific online persona of mine.

@Umbreon@donphan.social Strictly speaking, god could come absolutely down teach me physics. But that isn't really something he's known to do frequently. And outside of stories that people tell to each other, people who claim to have observed him doing so usually turn out to not be fully genuine. Though, who's to say he ISN'T teaching us physics? Just not in person but instead by having creating phenomena and giving us the freedom of choice to notice and examine them ourselves?

@Umbreon@donphan.social To my knowledge, atheism is the belief that there absolutely is no god, and agnosticism is the belief that it's impossible to know whether or not there is a god. My belief is more like "I could literally shake hands with god and it wouldn't teach me physics". There's more to learn about our universe by examining it than there is from the existence of a god. In fact using the existence of a god to answer a question often prevents any deeper understanding of it.

@Umbreon@donphan.social I thought about relating that viewpoint to atheism or agnosticism but I felt like it's distinct enough to be it's own thing. It treats the existence of god more as a question of scope and context than a question of yes or no. The idea is that for a lot of questions (almost all of them actually), the existence of a godlike being simply isn't applicable to find the answer with. You can find AN answer, but it won't be one that brings you closer to true understanding.

@Umbreon@donphan.social To my knowledge, the biggest change brought by these were a reduction in child mortality, not as much an increase in maximum lifespan. Without healthcare people still live to 50-60 pretty frequently, if they survive childhood. But most animals get like a third of that tops. And that's in captivity, in the wild it's even worse. A fox's life expectancy is around 10 years at most, and in the wild it gets as low as 3 years.

@pluralistic I'm not really into religion much but isn't trying to build an artificial thing and pretending it's god like a super turbo giga Sin in literally all of them? Building a word sorting machine that's designed to sort words in order of what produces the most convincing sentence will not bring us any closer to god, nor will it be one. Best it can do at helping us "meet god" is in the context of where that's a death threat. (which I honestly feel like is not an accident)

@echo_pbreyer@digitalcourage.social Reading the last paragraph in your article makes me think a lot about fire safety. We don't do fire safety by continuing to build every building out of plywood and putting smoke detectors everywhere, we do it by not building our houses, furniture and stuff out of easily flammable material so fires are less likely to happen in the first place and if one still does break out, it won't destroy as much. Online safety must be done with a similar approach.

It's probably possible to computationally determine exact pitches from only one wave cycle but I can't see that being anything less than extremely expensive computationally even with modern hardware.

Though the unfortunate thing is that there isn't really a better way to do whatever an FFT is trying to do better. Say you wanna differentiate between 140 and 150 hz. In an ideal scenario that should only take one wave cycle each, which is 7.142 and 6.667 miliseconds. Our ears can do that because they have physical structures that pick up specific frequencies. But to do it computationally you basically need to tell the 10 hz difference between them, which spans a timeframe of 100 miliseconds.

@greenpeace@mastodon.social Technically there have been plenty of wars fought over sunlight actually: Wars have been fought over farm land. A big part of the colonial times was to be able to plant and control crops that don't grow at home because of a lack of sunlight. But fortunately, unlike planting crops, solar panels work in almost all climate conditions.

I just had a wild very silly idea what if I used a MIDI controller like a launchpad mini in place of a gaming keyboard?

Gamers want low latency and music gear is about as low latency as you ever gonna get.

...though it DOES require me that I write a custom script to turn MIDI inputs into keyboard inputs

For some reason I woke up today with a random composition idea for a jazz piece.

I don't usually do jazz. I'm pretty much entirely clueless about jazz. This is the second time this exact thing happened. This hasn't happened for any other genre.

Why do I dream about jazz sometimes?

A city made of bricks can never do that.

In terms of how human biology works, people with plural systems are objectively correct.

You ain't just one thing it's a trillion microscopic things that come together to form a billion tiny things that come together to form a million small things that come together to form you. All of these levels can affect you in some way, from your mood and impulses to even small aspects of your personality and mental state.

@hsza@social.tudbut.de @Elizafox@social.treehouse.systems It doesn't have to be gatekept at all. Just the creator, the person who did pretty much all of the work, should be fairly compensated for said work. Of course that is only if the work or replicas of it get monetized in some way. If the creator chooses to put it out for free. As long as there's no economics involved the question of how to handle them doesn't apply.

@stux Media literacy (or more broadly literacy in general communication), plus philosophy and psychology with how they relate to reasoning and understanding are probably the most important things to learn in the world. Like humans are all about communication and sharing information but for some reason when it comes to effectively sharing information, understanding and interpreting it and so on we're pretty much expected to just figure out everything on our own.

With small window sizes it can barely tell apart 200 hz and 400 hz while between 14000 and 15000 hz it has it can differentiate with several frequency bands. The former is an entire octave of clearly defined notes while the latter roughly spans a singular note and is so high in pitch we can barely even recognize it. It's like if your monitor had 1 pixel at the bottom, 2 pixels in the next row up, 3 pixels next up and so on until hitting your total pixel count.
