E1: You'll need a greater volume of feathers to make a kilogram, but the weight is the same: the weight of 1 kg. E2: A kilogram is a kilogram, but gold is measured in troy pounds, which are smaller than the usual avoirdupois pounds (0.3732417216 kg vs 0.45359237 kg). E3: A troy pound is so small because it's only 12 ounces, not 16. A troy ounce is still different from an avoirdupois ounce, but now it's slightly larger (0.0311034768 kg vs 0.02834952312 kg). (3/3, unless I redo all of this in grains)

A1: It's a trick question; they weigh the same amount. A2: It's a doubly trick question; the pound of feathers weighs more. A3: It's a triply trick question; the ounce of gold weighs more. (2/3, explanations in next post)

@typeswitch@gamedev.lgbt I'm reading the censored word as ‘Omelas’, and I don't want to know what fresh horrors the French have come up with for that poor child.

@pencilears @fesshole At a Japanese restaurant, I'll order green tea ice cream and hot green tea, then pour the hot green tea over the green tea ice cream. (It works with other flavours of ice cream as well, often even better.) I'm posting this under my real name because I have nothing to be ashamed of, so be sure to credit me as the inventor.

Maybe just as philosophy is the study of ideas that have not yet matured enough to become science, so AI is the study of programming methods that have not yet matured. So even if this transition work is technically done by a large language model similar to the ones that you mentioned, your hope is that it won't be AI anymore so it won't be slop.

@michelestrider@mastodon.social As a cross-country Amtrak rider from way back, I tell you that the observation car is the place to be. You can do all those things there; strangers in the passenger cars are trying to read quietly or take a nap, but strangers in the observation car are sociable and ready to talk. And it's immediately above the lounge car (the same car, just different levels) on all of the long-distance trains that I've been on, so you can pop down there for both food and beverages anytime you need them (although if your roomette reservation includes meals, then you don't want to skip the dining car altogether). Since I haven't ridden in a few years, it's possible that they dismantled all of this for covid and never put it back. But the cars are all prefabricated, so as long as the observation cars still exist at all, I doubt that they've changed much.

But that doesn't mean that it would be the kind of AI that you describe as unhelpful at the end of your post. Rather, it means that AI encompasses much more than those things.

@futurebird The narration shifted from second person to first person, so I thought that maybe we were shifting perspectives from 6L to 8L. But I guess we're still 6L.

@Phosphenes @davidtheeviloverlord @futurebird That's what I thought; the timing works out. Next time you dream this, @futurebird, please either dream about explicitly the prototaxites of the late Devonian, or dream that Pica caught a ray-finned fish. Otherwise your dream may wipe us all from the timeline.

@ysegrim Yes, the trick in this variation is really about mass. Someone in a quoted thread pointed out that the feathers are probably stacked higher where they feel a weaker gravitational force too.

@simontatham@hachyderm.io @fraggle@social.coop Apply the Bill and Ted principle: as long as you win, you can always go back in time *after* the game and set everything up just right. This means that you forfeit the game for causality violation if your first queen ever gets captured, but not otherwise.

@xahteiwi@mastodon.social @pludikovsky@chaos.social I normally don't use any spacing, because I'm not French. But if I'm trying to be, then I usually use U+202F (narrow no-break space). Unfortunately, many fonts make this a full-width or nearly full-width space. It generally looks better with U+2009 (thin space) if I have some other method to prevent line-breaking. (A zwj after the space helps, although it's not the proper use of that character.)
