Ex of Twitter (and many others before that) by way of mastodon.social (same user ID across a lot of platforms) and evil.social (R.I.P.). Most of what I post would probably be considered "shit-posting" as I tend to type out whatever comes to mind without much filtering.

@MichalBryxi@mastodon.world Honestly, I don't think we should be trying to normalize "here, scan this QR code — that some rando could have fucked with — to complete a financial transaction". Seems kinda "recipe for disaster" adjacent. I mean, that kind of normalization seems like doing to smart phone users what can be done with creditcard skimmers at gasoline pumps (and other not-well-monitored point-of-sale systems).

@sarahtaber@mastodon.online Most of the contracts specify payment-schedules that jurisdictions are responsible for if they don't sufficiently fill the imprisonment-pipeline's requirements. The prisons likely don't care: they're getting paid one way or the other. The jurisdictions that have to pay "penalties", however…

@sue@glasgow.social Altman has this perpetual, "slightly-confused" look on his face. I'm sure there's some who see it and are disarmed by it, but combined with the rest of his loathsome personality, ideas and activities, it's just all the more enraging. It makes him one of those "he has a really punchable face" people.

@sarahtaber@mastodon.online While Virginia has legalized recreational weed, you still have to get it from authorized dispensaries. And, much like you can't get alcohol delivered (now that the COVID exemptions have been repealed), you can't get weed (legally) delivered. So, at least people still have to go out to the store and be sorta social?

One of the cool things about going to DC hockey — and presumably basketball — games is that there's a large Metro station under the arena. DC is stupid not to try to expand Metro access at the new stadium.

We have a baker's dozen of peonies in various shades of white, pink and red. They're soon going to have spent themselves for the season. This "album" shows what's probably going to be the last bouquet we get from this year's blooms.

We also have a climbing-rose in our back yard. Last year, before I did the "winterizing" cut-back, it had grown midway up our second-floor windows. It came back
aggressively, this spring. It set about 40 buds. It buds 2-4 times/season, so, the rose-bouquet in this mini-album are just the cuttings from the first bloom.

I think regularly making use of my #EV's "range" mode confuses its computer's range-calculations. On the one hand, it has generally changed from predicting 180mi-ish range for 100%-0% to prediction a 220-240mi range. On the other hand, when you're out driving, the predicted range erodes much more quickly than what you're actually driving.

I mean, we
did get significantly better range on our Independence Day weeklong road-trip than we'd gotten on prior road trips (no need to charge, this time, on the 2.75hr outbound or return legs and 30%-ish battery remaining at each end after starting at 90%). But I don't know how much of that was using "range" mode, how much was greater use of cruise-control and how much was due to weather differences.

Other day, after gym, wife asked if we could stop by the Whole Foods nearest our house. The route there takes us part a Wegmans. As we're cresting the hill that ends in the intersection that, if you go straight you get to the Wegmans and if you turn right you go to the Whole Foods, I had a quick doubt: "did you say Wegmans or Whole Foods?" Wife was incredulous: "they don't even sound similar." I replied, "they both begin with 'W' and my brain works visually." That they're both grocery stores along the same route means my visual brain just further conflates them.

Looking at the picture, if I draw a sight-line from where the grey SUV's driver's head would be and then to my bumper, it pretty much intersects with their hoodline. So, yeah, I guess their parking heuristic is "leave enough space ahead of me to see the bumper of the other car".

#Google makes literally zero effort to ensure that each of their services' web Consoles functions usefully-similarly — let alone "identically"— to each other. You usually only see this level of fracturedness in an "enterprise" product when a company has bought a whole bunch of companies and then quickly cobbled together some kind of management overlay.

Jesus. You know that your service's web UI sucks when not just
#AWS beats you, but so too does #Azure.

Whaaaat the absolute fuck.

Alright. Spent part of day migrating my #minikube from #DockerDesktop bridged to #WSL2 to #Podman hosted in WSL. That will save me a few hundred MiB of system memory and some compute-cycles. Only required some very minor tweaks to my #kustomize enabled #NemoClaw configuration (LAYERS!!). Unfortunately, moving away from Docker Desktop meant I also had to update my system's hosts file.

Oh well. Productive day.

When people ask why I would be for something akin to "Medicare for all" when I've never not had insurance, it comes down to WHY I've never not had insurance. Having expensive medical conditions since childhood, inclusion of adequate insurance was a key factor in EVERY job offer I took. It HAD to be. I couldn't take a job simply because it was interesting or non-minetarily rewarding. I HAD to o have medical coverage. Then, once I married, it became even more critical.

Seriously: why do you park like this?? I mean, maybe people learned to drive when a reasonable rule of thumb was "leave enough space so you can see the bumper of the person ahead of you and the headlights of the person behind you", but now? That only still kinda works if you're driving something the size of a Civic.

you would think that people who always back in to parking spaces would be better at it than they generally seem to be. Personally, I prefer head in parking. However, the charging port placement usually requires us to back in at public charges. Even as infrequently as I back in, I feel like I'm a lot better at it than people that always back in.

Also: if you're going to send me something saying "go read this ginormous document that's 90% the same as the last time you read it", how about you send me some kind of diff between the current and the prior document? I write code for a living. I'm used to release-note and/or diffs to save me from having to read EVERYTHING just to find the 10% that changed. Sure, on a one-page document, re-reading everything just to also get that bit of changed material is doable. However, if it's a literal "book", asking me to do that simply is not reasonable.

In the DC area, there's a lot of drivers that operate on the assumption of "if there's a gap such that oncoming cars will see me and slow down if I pull in, it's safe to do so" These are people that will be involved in multiple car accidents across their driving lifetimes. I try to operate on the assumption I won't be seen and reacted to in time.

The funny thing is, these same people will do a 70mph+ freeway merge — or lane-change — into a gap they wouldn't feel comfortable
parking in.

Orencia day. I always try to get the first appointment of the day because street parking is about 20% the price of garage parking. However, I get there this morning to discover that the building is having maintenance work done. As a result, all the street parking is taken up by work trucks. So, lots of Maxed out pickups. Worse, because the town that owns the spots replaced individual meters with kiosks, everyone was parked very gappy. Worse, still, the work trucks were each leaving a truck
